Little Mac jogged down a dirt path under the dawn.
He huffed at each step he made, his pink jumpsuit clinging loosely to his body. A cool air filled the world, hazy pink skies coloring the world with a dim, yet warm color. It enveloped his body with its coolness and lengthened the duration of his jog. Mac always found a cool weather to be easier to train in compared to damp or hot weathers, and the dawn of every season seemed to provide just that.
One step, two steps, three steps; slowly, the boxer slowed down as he walked over to a bench. He had jogged all the way to the park he always came across every day. No one but himself was present.
Sitting down on the wooden bench, the boxer took several breaths. Jogging did not burn his lungs as much as it did when he first began his boxing career. It soon turned out to be one of the less rigorous exercises that barely tired him out, but it still remained to be both a good daily exercise and a conditioner for his body. If he found jogging to be hard, he took his training a bit more lightly. If he found jogging to be easy, which was the case most of the time, then he would continue undergoing his rigorous training routine.
But more than anything, jogging became a habit.
The lightweight boxing champion turned his head and glanced behind him, observing the pink-grey skies. Earlier, they had a color that resembled purple more than pink. The change of color served to show the march of time relentless moving on without anything to stop it.
For some reason, breathing felt a bit harder than usual for Mac. He would normally take light breaths, but his breathing felt pretty heavy to him.
Perhaps it was a small problem that could be solved by paying a visit to a hospital.
It's probably nothing big, he thought as he got up from the bench. To prepare himself for a worst case scenario, however, he decided to return to the mansion instead of continuing his jog.
It turned out to be nothing big.
Coughing several times, the boxer went to the cafeteria for a healthy breakfast composed of a sandwich and a glass of milk. Bringing his food over to an empty table, the lightweight boxing champion took a deep breath before taking a bite out of his sandwich.
A tuna-and-egg sandwich. Though there were some foods that did not seem earthly at the slightest, thankfully, not all foods followed such criteria. He hungrily chowed down the sandwich as he drank from his glass of milk.
As he continued to eat, someone else sat at the table. The boxer looked up, only to find Samus Aran sitting across him. Without a word, the bounty hunter took a bite out of her own sandwich.
The boxer blinked, staring at the blonde space warrior before he resumed feasting upon his food. With half of his sandwich left, the dark-haired pugilist coughed several times yet again.
And every few bites, he coughed.
"…Hey."
Looking up from his food, Little Mac turned his attention to Samus, who gave him a blank stare.
"You should go visit a doctor," she pointed out while maintaining an idle expression. At her statement, the boxer nodded.
"Okay."
He coughed a bit more before taking a bite out of his sandwich yet again. Samus' eyebrows furrowed as she watched the pugilist wordlessly eat his food.
"You really should," she added in.
The boxer looked up from his food yet again. For some reason, his blank gaze made her feel uncomfortable. It probably had to do with the fact that she still did not forget the mistake she made several days ago. The fact that he seemingly did not care about the incident to the slightest only further enhanced her lack of comfort in talking with him.
To make things less awkward, she decided to talk with the boxer a bit. So far, it did not work.
"Okay," he repeated as he drank from his glass of milk.
Samus nodded. But alas, she had nothing special to talk with him about. "When are you going?" The bounty hunter asked.
"Soon."
"That's good to hear, then."
"Ye."
Finishing his food up, the boxer remained seated. He still had to finish his glass of milk, after all. Both Little Mac and Samus were silent for a good minute.
Then Peach came along to save the day, much to Samus' relief.
"Hello, Samus!" Peach exclaimed softly as she approached them with a sandwich of her own. "Hello, Mister Mac!"
The bounty hunter smiled. "Heya," she said, feeling less tense now that she was not the only one with the boxer.
Mac simply let out a flat "Hi," though he did not forget to give her a polite nod. Though his expression said otherwise, his actions clearly showed signs of respect to the princess.
Peach giggled. "I heard you coughing at the entrance of the cafeteria," she said in a manner-of-factly way. "Mister Mac! You mustn't let the cold get the best of you."
"I got it under control," the boxer responded before he drank out of his glass. "I think."
"I can walk with you to a hospital!" Peach offered brightly. "I have a bit of free time, so I do not have anything urgent to attend to at the moment."
"It's fine."
With a small smile, the blonde princess nodded as she sat next to Samus.
Peach began to chatter about the usual things she talked about: the growth of her plants, random news she read on the newspaper, and interesting things she saw in the mansion. She seemed absolutely enamored with the news about Wario donating a wad of money to a small medical organization, stating that her view on him changed a bit. And indeed, it did seem odd of the money-grubby man to donate money out of all things.
Then again, it could be him just showing off. At least he showed off in a good way.
When Samus seemed to be absorbed with Peach's light chattering, Little Mac slid out of the table unnoticed.
The boxer eventually went to the hospital.
From what he remembered, there was a certain reason why he did not want to go to the building in general. Something about it struck him in the wrong way. He could not think of an exact reason why, though.
Then he remembered the incident where a patient had been blasted out of the doctor's office with footprints all over the "victim."
And all of a sudden, it clicked. The doctor was quite clearly not the most orthodox of doctors.
Whether Doctor Mario actually had a legitimately earned medical license was a mystery. Sure, he apparently had one, but no one knew how he earned it. Then again, who would question a doctor that had the ability to blast people out of his office?
…Everyone would want to question him, but really, not even Ganondorf took Doctor Mario lightly.
"Come in," the voice of the doctor said behind the office door. The pugilist entered the office.
Doctor Mario was a stout man with a stout patience. His face was all business and covered not a single bit of hidden emotion. He wore many of the things that doctors tended to wear, including a white medical coat, gloves, and a stethoscope hung over his neck.
He was a total contrast to Mario, Mac would say. The boxer, however, wondered why Mario was the first thing he would compare to Doctor Mario. They were totally different people, after all! There was no way they looked similar in terms of appearance, personality, and background.
They were totally not the same person.
"So what's the problem?" Dr. Mario asked as he crossed his fingers, seated on a black spinning chair at his table.
"I think I have a cold."
Motioning for Mac to open his mouth, the Prescriber took out a small flashlight and took a few good seconds to analyze him. Turning the flashlight off, the doctor informed Mac, "You have a cold."
Mac had a hard time believing that Dr. Mario actually analyzed his condition within two seconds, but he decided to go along with the flow. When the pugilist nodded, Dr. Mario wordlessly stood up, revealing his height. He was just as tall as Mario; and that was probably the only similarity he had with the plumber. But then again, there were so many differences between the two, Mac was absolutely sure that they were not the same person.
They definitely were not the same person.
As the doctor dug through a fridge for reasons unknown to Little Mac, the boxer took his time to analyze the office. It reminded him a bit of his dad's workplace, the only difference being that his father's office was a bit bigger.
Soon, Dr. Mario went back to the boxer with two pills. One was red and the other was blue.
And then the doctor told him, "You take the blue pill, the story ends. You wake up in your bed and believe whatever you want to believe. You take the red pill, you stay in Wonderland, and I show you how deep the rabbit hole goes."
…At least, that was what Little Mac expected the doctor to tell him, especially after everything he went through. Instead, the doctor just told him to "eat the pills" while offering a glass of water.
Little Mac downed both the water and the pills within two big gulps. Handing the doctor the empty glass, the pugilist blinked.
…Was it already over?
"That's it," Dr. Mario confirmed his suspicions. "You're cured."
For a moment, the lightweight boxing champion thought he had been ripped off in the most boring way possible. But a few seconds later, he realized that his body did not feel as heavy as before.
Wow, Mac thought.
That was it.
That was seriously it.
Well, that's pretty convenient.
"That'll be a hundred bucks," Dr. Mario said.
And of course it's just as expensive as it is convenient.
Thankfully, Little Mac had been prepared for the worst, so a hundred bucks did not faze him. He took out… one-hundred one bucks. It was everything he had in his pockets at the moment.
He was literally two bucks away from possibly getting blasted out of the room.
I guess the insane price is why that patient got blasted out, the boxer thought.
After receiving his money, Dr. Mario simply commanded Mac, "Now get out."
And get out he did. As he left the building, he heard the faint sound of an explosion from where Dr. Mario's office was.
Another unfortunate patient had fallen victim to the doctor's wrath.
As soon as Mac returned to the mansion, he was greeted with the sight of Ryu pulling off a string of attacks on Mewtwo in the lobby.
He had no idea how the brawl in the mansion began, but it was probably triggered by Ryu's eagerness to randomly face people in battle. From what he heard, despite being as human as he could be, Ryu was one of the strongest fighters in the Super Smash Brothers tournaments. The power he held did not exist only after he trained vigorously until he reached the top. He was the prime example of someone who genuinely raised one's own limits endlessly.
So it was no surprise to see that Mewtwo would get defeated so quickly, despite his telekinetic prowess being pretty immense outside of the Smash Bros matches. Mac witnessed Ryu kneeing the psychic Pokemon's across the face before lightly kicking at Mewtwo's feet. With the Pokemon now airborne, the world warrior grabbed Mewtwo, punching him against the ground as he let his opponent be propelled into the air.
Ryu then leapt high and performed his iconic Tornado Kick, sending the psychic Pokemon crashing against a wall.
"H-Holy fu-" Mewtwo gurgled before immediately going unconscious as he fell off the wall.
Meanwhile, Little Mac was just glad that he had a solid ground game to match Ryu's dominance in terms of stringing attacks both in the air and on the ground.
As the world warrior straightened himself, his eyes fell upon Little Mac.
Little Mac's gaze met Ryu's, both of their eyes gleaming with a sudden kindling of interest in entering a duel. They always felt like dueling each other whenever they saw each other, and though neither of them were able to properly explain why, they did not care much composing an actual reason.
They just fought for the excitement of battle.
"…Let us take this outside," Ryu said. Mac nodded, agreeing that a duel between them should not take place inside the mansion.
They soon found themselves outside of the mansion. Walking down the dirt path, the two fighters decided to spar in the open. The openness of the outside ground promised more room than the limited room the gymnasium offered, and knowing both of them, they excelled mostly on the ground.
"…I am ready," the world warrior stated seriously. The lightweight pugilist nodded in response, taking out his gloves as he prepared an idle stance. Ryu slowly took on an idle stance.
A moment of silence arrived. Both of the fighters stared each other down.
The two soon sped off toward each other. Right before the martial artist and the boxer were able to throw out their respective kicks and punches, however, a loud explosion resonated across the entire backyard. Ryu stumbled as Little Mac simply fell on his butt.
Something blew up, and it erupted deeper down the vast backyard.
Ryu and Little Mac glanced at each other, the seriousness in their eyes changing to graveness. Without a word, the martial artist and the lightweight boxing champion ran off deeper to the backyard of the mansion.
The Observatory was quite far for something that lay in the entire back yard of the mansion. The smoke that emitted from the Observatory, however, was not hard to spot even from the mansion itself. Using every bit of their strength, the dark-haired world warrior and the pugilist ran down the dirt path. They soon found themselves approaching an Observatory on fire.
"Wha-" Ryu gaped as he and Little Mac slowed down. The boxer was no less surprised at the sheer scale of the fire. It was as if someone decided to use the entire building as a bonfire.
Why was the entire thing on fire in the first place?
Now, Little Mac was afraid of fire like any other sane human being. He never had a bad life because of a fire hazard, but he knew how dangerous it was to approach fire in general, especially if it was not a simple campfire. He steeled himself.
Neither of them knew what was going on inside the Observatory, but the chances were that Rosalina was unconscious in the structure. There was no way that she would not have made it out had she anticipated a fire.
There had to be some way to explore the burning Observatory even if there was the chance of touching magma.
Right at that moment, Zelda rushed into the scene.
"W-What on Hylia…" The princess whispered as she slowed down before the catastrophic sight before her. "What is this…?"
"We heard a loud explosion," Ryu explained briefly, his expression dark. "This is the first thing we encountered. No doubt that the Cosmic Travellers are still inside the Observatory."
"What?! Then we need to get them out right now- but…"
Zelda did not need to end her sentence. None of the three had the power to neither quell the fire nor go inside and find Rosalina without a big risk of getting injured. And as princess of Hyrule, Zelda had even more risks to make if she simply warped into the area.
The boxer knew of her as a wise and powerful princess, but there was one spell in particular that he remembered Zelda using briefly in one of the friendly tournament matches against Link.
"Seldom," Mac called out as he turned to her.
"…My name is Zelda."
"Oh. Zelda, can you cast the blue diamond thing on me?"
At his vague description of Nayru's Love, it took Zelda a couple of seconds to fully understand what he wanted. "Are you sure?" She questioned. "It's a very brief spell, and I am not sure if you can be fast enough to avoid the magma."
Mac nodded. Due to the urgent situation, Zelda decided to disregard all the questions she had for Little Mac out of all people asking for a protection spell and channeled her magic. Turning to Ryu, the boxer told the martial artist,
"Kick me."
"I understa- wait, why must I kick you?"
The pugilist pointed at the Observatory- the library's direction, to be exact- as he explained properly,
"Kick me to the library."
"If you truly think it will work… then I will trust in you. But I will follow you in case you need a hand."
Ryu was an easy man. That was definitely appreciable in urgent situations.
Soon, a blue light shone around the lightweight boxing champion's body, and a spinning crystal formed around him.
"This spell only lasts for a minute," Zelda explained with a grave expression. "You have to be outside of the Observatory by the time its duration ends."
Mac nodded. He then ran forward.
Running forward, Little Mac made an abrupt turn and kicked his feet against the ground towards Ryu with all the strength he could muster. Ryu took a deep breath, and everyone wondered just what they were doing.
Twisting his body, the martial artist delivered a clean hit against the crystal that formed around Little Mac, propelling the boxer towards the Observatory. Little Mac could feel it! The plan was going to work.
Little Mac crashed through the window of the bed room instead.
The martial artist smiled.
I kicked him into the bedroom like he asked me to, he thought proudly. Next time, Mac would take off his gloves to point at certain directions if things looked complicated.
Regardless of Ryu's mistake, he still did what Mac wanted him to do- get past the pile of heap that lay burning around the Observatory. The stairs had been blocked off by an immense rubble, and everyone capable of going into the Observatory lacked the resistance to remain inside for a brief amount of time.
Mac picked himself up, shrugging off pieces of glass off of his pink hoodie. Interestingly enough, Ryu somehow flew through the open window with a tornado kick.
How high can he go? The young man with boxing gloves wondered.
But he had no time to lose.
Bursting out of the bedroom door, Mac found something unexpected.
Some sort of tiny thing… made out of black dust(?) lay still in front of him. It had four legs, and it had a gaping hole on its entire face. Magma leaked out of the hole, and the creature twitched sporadically.
"What is that?" Ryu muttered, echoing Mac's own thoughts.
And it turned out it was not alone. There were plenty of other lookalikes sitting around, and all of them turned to the pugilist and the martial artist.
Holy crap, the boxer thought as he readied an idle stance.
The creature closest to him scampered towards him, leaving behind a thin trail of magma as it suddenly leapt at his direction. The pugilist ducked under the creature as he dodged the magma practically spilling out of its face. Eyes wide and his heart beating fast, the lightweight boxing champion spun to his left immediately to dodge yet another leaping creature. Ryu managed to duck and punch the gut of the creature, sending it flying into the air as it faded into nothingness.
What the heck were they fighting?
These guys are way too small to be detected from the outside, he thought as he raised a fist. He immediately jerked it back when another creature leapt towards him, forcing him to duck and swerve to his right.
"I will distract them!" Ryu roared as he threw a Hadouken at one of the creatures, blasting it apart in the process. "Go find Rosalina!"
Finally being given a chance to run, Mac sped off to the library. He swung the door open and slammed it shut, hoping that it would buy him at least a bit of time. The magma pouring out of the creatures' faces would probably melt the door and maybe even the entire library, so he knew he had to hurry anyway. Little Mac turned and looked for Rosalina.
She was not present.
That's weird, Mac thought, his mind turning its gears at maximum speed as he looked around hastily. She should be here, especially since all the other structures here were melted apart…
Gulping, the lightweight boxing champion's eyes darted around the room until they caught something. In front of him, a small part of the ground seemed to form a thin, but noticeable gap. The rest of the line was covered by a circular carpet he had stepped on not too long ago.
A trap door.
Running over to the carpet, he threw it aside. Sure enough, there was a trap door. The boxer reached for the knob and swung it open.
Rosalina lay huddled up in the small and cramped box of a room, unconscious. All of the Lumas around her were awake, their eyes wide at Mac's appearance. She had a noticeable bruise that stretched from her cheek to the side of her head.
The Lumas all scuttled toward Mac's direction letting out soft cries of relief, though they did not leave the hidden room.
Great. How was he supposed to fight things that poured out magma while protecting the Cosmic Travellers?
I better at least try lasting long enough for Ryu to arrive, he thought, but then he remembered that the intense heat could destroy him, especially if he went anywhere near the magma creatures. He needed to do something that could distract them within approximately twenty seconds.
Whirling around, the boxer turned to the door and found it to be already melting. His eyes darted around, looking for something he could use.
"Guys," he said as he turned to the Lumas. "Any weapons?"
The Lumas blinked curiously.
Well, it was obvious they would be confused. Little Mac just found them hiding and immediately asked for weapons; from what he knew, that would not be a common occurrence to the star creatures.
But then one of the Lumas pointed behind him.
The boxer turned and found a… golden shield hanging on the wall. He would later know of this shield as the "Back Shield," as named by a certain angelic warrior. Snatching it off of the wall, the pugilist found himself carrying a heavy defensive item.
Though the thought of using a lightsaber to cut through the enemies sounded much better, who was he to ask for something more than an object he could protect with in such a situation?
With the shield grasped with both of his gloved hands, the boxer made sure it did not slip out of his grip and took a deep breath.
Then, one of the creatures burst through the door. Little Mac raised his shield and felt a light force smashing into the shield as he pushed it forward. With the creature on the ground, the boxer quickly moved to its side and used the bottom part of the shield to "stab" at the thing.
It died instantly. The dust blew up, and the ball of magma in its face also disappeared. The small, flat trail it left behind did not disappear, however. The pugilist turned and found one of the other creatures scampering towards him. Thankfully, the creatures did not seem to be intelligent, so he used the same tactic and stabbed the thing as well.
Right at that moment, he felt something push him to the side. The pugilist quickly got up, only to find that one of the creatures had attacked the crystal around him.
And just as his gaze met the creature, the crystal around him faded.
Just great, he thought as he regained his composure.
As the creature leapt forward, Mac felt his heart beat faster. At that point, there should have been help to assist him.
A Hadouken blasted the creature right in front of Mac as the pugilist raised his shield, causing a small streak of magma to splatter against the golden object. Lowering the item, he found Ryu kicking one of the creatures across the face.
"The magma these things are pouring out seem to only set metal on fire!" Ryu exclaimed. He had a bit of magma splattered across his karate gi.
And as soon as he finished saying his theory, the shield in Mac's hands suddenly lit up. Was it because the magma stuck onto the shield for too long?
But Mac knew that there was no time for theorizing a bunch of ideas. Tossing the ignited object towards a bunch of black dust monsters, the boxer ran up to a swarm of creatures as he began pulverizing them. Now that he knew the magma was not actually the kind of magma that destroyed Pompeii, confidence sparked within him.
Soon, the monsters suddenly scurried off to one direction. As they moved towards a certain point on the Observatory, they began to merge.
…Wait, what?
His eyes wide, Little Mac saw a large humanoid figure being formed by the masses of dust. Its face dripped of magma, and its arms and legs were unnaturally long. What caught the pugilist's eye the most, however, was how the monster twitched constantly.
"Watch out!" Ryu shouted. "It's definitely up to something!"
And up to something it was. Clenching its fists, the creature began producing waves of dark energy around its body. It soon threw its arms to the skies, channeling lightning-like magic of some sort as a pitch-black sphere surrounded the Observatory. Darkness enveloped Mac's world for a brief second before streaks of light suddenly overlapped the sphere's material.
It was as if they were in another world. The lights around Mac and Ryu were pale, and lacked any kind of welcoming warmth. The world had gone cold.
Mac could only presume that the black dust monster was the "Swarm" Samus had talked about. That was the only information he had on potential threats to the Smash Bros world, after all.
The Observatory remained ablaze, but it now floated in some sort of interdimensional area. Mac had no idea how to describe the place he was in, so he decided to focus on the enemy in front of him.
The entity swung its arm wildly, causing a beam of light to briefly shine at where Ryu stood at. His eyes widening, the martial artist instinctively rolled away from the spot, barely dodging a beam of light that came out of nowhere. A clean hole lay at where the beam had gone through.
Seeing that Ryu had dodged the attack, the Swarm being solidified the magma on its face, creating a massive hammerhead out of its own head. Running over to the martial artist and the boxer, the thing attempted to flatten them with its titanium face.
Now, the Swarm being's height was quite over twice of Little Mac's own height. It was only natural for Little Mac to dodge faster than Ryu not by instinct, but out of surprise. The way it went straight towards them reminded him a bit of Bald Bull's antics back at his WVBA career.
The martial artist found the Swarm's heavy attack to be an opening. Gathering his focus, the world warrior threw out a red Hadouken. The Shakunetsu Hadouken lit the creature on fire as it wildly swung its arms. As it flung itself around, a sudden torrent of magma spewed out of its face towards the air.
Ryu leapt backward to avoid the mass of magma, while Little Mac rolled away from chunks of magma sent at his direction.
"It has no attack pattern," the martial artist said thoughtfully. "But its attacks all share similar qualities to them."
Mac agreed. First things first, if the Swarm swung itself around, that meant that it was going to do a ranged attack. So far, it delivered no form of melee attacks aside from the "lava-in-my-face-gonna-get-you" attack it pulled off several moments ago.
"We need to aggravate it," the pugilist added in. "Throw out more energy at him. I'm gonna go get something quick."
As Ryu obliged and threw out a powerful Hadouken, the boxer went back to the library. There had to be something they could use to aggravate the thing into approaching them. During his search, however, he spotted a set of Legos set on the floor.
At that moment, a terrible idea dawned upon him.
I have no idea if it's going to work, but I need something that could possibly be effective in some form as soon as possible.
With that in mind, the lightweight boxing champion picked up a clump of Lego bricks and ran out of the library. The Lumas watched him leave worriedly from the trap door.
The Swarm did not approach yet, but it looked like it was going to charge forward at any time soon. Ryu's ranged prowess had annoyed it plentifully enough.
"Get ready," the boxer said as he set up his plan. "When it charges forward, back off, and deliver your strongest attack."
"Are you sure this will work?"
"No. I'm absolutely sure it will work."
The Swarm was aware of pain. It showed signs of it every time it began twitching like crazy whenever something hit it. Ryu's Hadoukens proved that, and if that was the case, luring the thing in was the best option they had.
A mighty, distorted roar emitted from the Swarm being as it soon ran across the path of magma that set itself and the two Smashers away from each other. It picked up speed at a terrifying pace. With the entity finally taking the bait, Ryu and Little Mac leapt back before they gathered all the strength they had within themselves.
And then it happened.
The Swarm stepped on the Lego bricks scattered in front of itself.
"?!"
Screaming incoherently, the being's charge faltered as it clutched its head out of pain. By the time the peak of its pain had faded, it was too late for the Swarm to recover.
Ryu's donkey-kick and Little Mac's Straight Lunge blasted it away, absolutely obliterating the creature. As it flew across the air, its remains faded away before they fell out of sight.

"For some reason," Ryu said as the lights around them began to dim, "I understand its pain."
"Me too."
With the Swarm entity defeated, Little Mac and Ryu found themselves back in the world of Smash. The Observatory was still on fire, but the things that caused the chaos had been vanquished. Far away from the Observatory, Zelda returned with a plethora of fighters who could quell the fire spread all over the structure.
And Little Mac really just wanted to jump off of the burning pile of heap as soon as possible. Still, he could not help but feel strange about the Swarm's presence.
Something about it just felt… off.

Author's Notes:
This chapter was supposed to be "The Meanest Doctor in the World" but then I added plot in, so it turned into what it is now.
Next chapter – "Ike VS Little Mac's Television"
