Chapter 312

.

Eve thought about her relationship with Zoey Allen these last few years. Perhaps they were friends, they generally got along okay. The first time they'd met was when Eve was an Ark worker, then when Eve was a convicted murderer in a juvenile detention camp. Then after Eve committed treason. Now, finally, with Eve having helped with a successful uprising, having betrayed her country yet again. It might seem that Eve was never a true believer in anything, that she merely tried to figure out which way the wind was blowing, and adjusted her sails. Then again, Zoey did some interesting things since their first meeting. Smuggled, drugs, had an abortion. She spoke out for the anti-war movement, then boxed other women for the amusement of loyalist soldiers. If the rumors were true she'd married either an evangelical preacher, or the self-proclaimed anti-christ. Eve was chosen to deliver the note to Zoey because she was as close to a friend as Zoey had in Brooklyn. The hope was that she could not only talk to president Mason, but hold influence over him. On Monday March 17th, shortly before Zoey's departure, Eve began talking to her about recent movies. Sector police weren't suppossed to discuss forbidden outside movies, but this wouldn't attract much attention with informants. Zoey said there seemed to be little middle ground between complete fluff, or hardcore sex and violence. Hopefully, both could keep the public entertained, keep spirits up. Half the new movies had no villains, everyone just eventually got along and found new happiness by the end. The others, probably never would've been allowed before 2/4. The young porn actress known as "Sugar" had been tortured to death by an obsessed "fan." Because this torture was broadcast over the internet, conspiracy theorists believed Sugar had wanted this, a desperate attempt to achieve eternal fame. Eve said the sector was making movies for missionary efforts. The biggest one was a satire of George Mason, saying he was the anti-christ. He was created with a combination genetic engineering and dark magic, his true religion was "Finis Generatium." Apparently their true purpose was to lure souls to evil to be used as cannon fodder for the devil's war against God. Tobacco was forbidden here in the sector, but few said anything if Zoey or her protection started smoking, even offered some to these police. This seemed a normal incident, didn't attract attention. During their conversation Eve quietly handed Zoey the note. She wasn't sure if Zoey really understood what this note was about. But, with her best poker face showing, Zoey quickly placed this note in her pocket.

Once again Eve found herself nervously pacing in her apartment At least this time Jamal was here with her. He would't say exactly how he'd been injured, likely trying to protect his wife. They were waiting for Zoey to call the cellphone with the number they'd given her. Everyone from their group would take shifts guarding this cellphone, since they didn't know exactly when Zoey might call. It was Monday March 17th, 125 days until impact. It might be days, even weeks, before Zoey called. Maybe it wasn't yet safe for her to contact these traitors. Either way, time was running out. But on this night, as if a direct answer to their prayers, their phone rang.

The first conversation was very brief. Zoey confirmed that she was in. Eve said it might be someone else on the phone next time. Zoey already knew Jamal, there were five others in their group. Eve gave each of them code names. Zoey assumed it was to protect their identities. Eve was a little embarrassed to admit she couldn't remember most of their names. The code names were Red, Siler, Blue, Green, and Purple. This ended their conversation. They couldn't talk for long, for fear of being overheard by informants. But they had a powerful ally on the outside, and a clear protocol for making contact. It was a good start.
