Chapter 329
.
Eve and Lily were able to escape from the camp. Noone stopped them because noone knew that Lily was a suspect in Nadia's murder. After the instinct of flight wore off Eve realized she had no idea where to go. Elliot would come after them, he had to. With animals becoming more scarce the gangs would risk his wrath if he appeared weak. Killing them was the best way for Elliot to protect his own. For now the best Eve could do was put as much distance as possible between them and the camp. As they walked away Lily tried to again take Eve's hand. Eve suddenly felt an anger neither of them expected.
.
Eve: What the hell do you think you're doing?
Lily: I'm sorry. I just needed to hold your hand.
Eve: Just because I saved your life does not mean that you're forgiven.
Lily: I'm sorry.
Eve: Let's just keep moving, before I do something I'll regret.
.
Lily and Eve kept walking until they couldnt walk anymore. They ate the little dog meat that Eve had stolen from the camp. Around sunset they made their own camp and prepared to rest for the night. Lily hadn't spoken since Eve yelled at her, but she tried it again now.
.
Lily: Where do we go tomorrow?
Eve: I don't know. We need to get out of Central Park. After that we could get killed by other gangs, but at least they won't be looking for us specifically.
Lily: Will we be safe anywhere?
Eve: We were suppossed to be safe with Elliot, Nadia was suppossed to be safe.
Lily: But, wasn't she our enemy. She was a muslim, isn't she in Hell?
Eve: I was a muslim once too. Nadia saved my soul. Islam made me a better person, but I still did some bad things. I thought I could assure my own salvation with christianity. Nadia thought that was simply a quick fix, maybe she was right. She risked her life to save you. That, is the person you tried to send to Hell.
Lily: I'm sorry. But then why...
Eve: You're wondering why I saved you?
Lily: Yes.
Eve: So am I. Maybe it's because it's what Nadia would've wanted. Maybe because, all I saw was a scared little girl, in over her head. 90 days until impact, I seriously doubt either of us is getting into Heaven. Saving you seems like as good a way as any to spend my remaining days.
.
Eve and Lily tried to sleep this night. Both were scared. During the night Lily went closer to Eve for warmth and comfort. Despite her anger Eve didn't kick Lily away. They slept for several hours, then they heard noises. Eve woke up instantly, despite her sleepiness. They were still in danger, they had to move. Soon they heard voices that neither girl recognized. Then came one that they did, Elliot. Elliot thanked these others for their help. It seemed Elliot was so determined to uphold his law, he was asking his rivals for help. If they were spotted, they were dead.
The girls kept running in the dark. Elliot called for them, but they didn't answer. Eve hoped he didn't recognize them in the dark, but he kept following them. Finally they ran into another man with a gun, pointed at them. Eve punched him, he didn't see it in the darkness. Eve quickly grabbed his pistol and ran away. But it was too late. It had been a trap, Lily and Eve were now surrounded on all sides by Elliot and his allies. Elliot offered to let Eve go if she just walked away, but she refused. Eve figured she couldn't live with herself if she let them murder Lily. But the gangs couldn't let them walk away. It seemed to be a universally accepted law among park gangs, never kill one of your own. This gun had six bullets, Elliot's allies seemed willing to risk death to uphold the law. Lily didn't want any more harm to come to these people, especially Eve, the closest thing she had to a friend. Before Eve could stop her, Lily grabbed her gun, and put it in her own mouth. Lily pulled the trigger and killed herself instantly.
