Chapter 334

.

Going on a hunger strike had seemed like a good idea at the time. But now, Eve wished she'd eaten more, built up her strength. She could hear Gaines coming, calling for her to stop as if he expected her to actually do it. He wasn't going to stop, he required her to get his team into the Arks. The only good thing Eve could say about Gaines was his complete loyalty to his team. Having failed them, he might take hi anger out on her. Eve could see the crowd, she was almost there. But then Gaines tackled Eve to the ground. He couldn't bring her back, the crowd would know what he was doing. But if he killed her here, Gaines had roughly a 50% chance of the crowd killing him, he seemed willing to risk it. Some in the crowd were watching, but noone was coming to Eve's aid. Gaines drew his gun, it was the same one he'd taken from Eve. It seemed she would get the death she'd wanted, he'd even use the same gun. With Gaines standing over her with the gun Eve began praying. She didn't believe she deserved salvation, but hoped God wasin a forgiving mood right now. Then he attacked. A wolf attacked Gaines, went after his throat like it was smeared with fresh meat. To her suprise, Eve felt she recognized this wolf, it looked like Balto. Before she could react there was a gunshot. Eve hurried over, the bullet had killed the wolf. Gaines was twitching. If he wasn't already dead he would be soon. Eve took the gun and shot Gaines in the head, putting him out of his misery. Was it possible that Balto had followed them, and saved her life at just the right moment? Or was this a different wolf, one who was desperate enough to try and eat Gaines? Either way, this was another friend that Eve had failed to save. A man came over to her. He offerred Eve a candy bar, two sodas, and a ciggarette for the wolf's body. Balto was apparently now meat Eve wanted to bury him, but he would've been dug up. And maybe it wasn't fair to this man, to his family, to waste good food. Eve was torn about accepting the offer. Her hunger got the better of her, and she didn't want to eat the wolf who saved her life, even if he was just a wild animal who went after a different food source. Eve accepted the trade and let them have Balto's body.
