Chapter 338

.

After the fighting stopped Eve tried to help some of the wounded. She knew some CPR from highschool. Eve tried to get poison gas out of their lungs, but for the most part it was too late. Eve didn't bother with those who had excessive drool, and still she found only dead body after dead body. Around sunrise more helicopters landed near the Ark. At first the crowd feared another attack. Instead, soldiers got out with medical supplies. This made little sense to Eve. Why kill so many, then save the few survivors? The soldiers weren't here yet. Some of the survivors were ready to murder these soldiers in vengeance. Eve still had her gun, four bullets. She wasn't sure what she would do, but she did feel greater hatred than she'd ever felt in her entire life. Eve crept behind a tree. Six soldiers guarded two doctors. Eve hated these people for what they'd done. She wanted to kill one of them, any one really. Eve knw she couldn't kill all of them, they'd probably take her down before she could get off a second shot. But she could go down fighting. These were soldiers, her enemy not long ago. But they were not currently fighting, they were trying to help the wounded. Two sides had fought here an hour ago, which side were these guys on? Eve also asked herself, "was this really how she wanted to die? Killing doctors and their protectors?" Eve raised her gun, aimed it at one of the soldiers, he looked oddly familiar. perhaps they'd fought on opposite sides in the same battle. Under different circumstances, Eve would've killed this man. But not like this, not when he was trying to save lives. Despite Eve's refusal to shoot, she soon heard the gunshots.

After hearing the gunshot Eve's first instinct was a natural one, she hid behind her tree. She soon asked herself if her gun had gone off accidentally, were these soldiers firing at her in retaliation? Eve checked her gun, still four bullets. The gunshots were coming from both directions, with Eve caught in the middle. Some refugees, not quite as noble as Eve, were firing at these soldiers. This was wrong, even in the war Eve wouldn't have tried to murder doctors who were helping people. She couldn't help but wonder if that was why her side lost. Eve fired her gun at these people. Tried to miss, just enough cover fire to keep them from shooting the doctors. Eve's actions seemed to have little effect upon this firefight. One doctor and two soldiers were killed, another soldier wounded. The refugees who shot at them were all killed. The surviving soldiers took their wounded comrade and began leaving. They feared retaliation, and they were greatly outnumbered. One called to Eve, asked her to come with them. They seemed to realize what Eve had just figured out, she'd shot the crowd to protect soldiers, if she stayed they'd ripher apart. Eve put her gun in her pocket and joined them. She helped carry the wounded soldier away. It was only then that Eve remembered where she'd seen him before, mostly from th news. This soldier was Jed Mason, son of president George Mason.
