Chapter 339

.

Eve helped bring Jed Mason to the helicopter, rode with them on the way to a private airfield, Their plane had special medical facilities to save the president's son. Eve was allowed to stay onboard as they flew back to Washington D. C. On the flight Eve heard them talk. It seemed they were fighting against general Gardner and his attempted takeover of the Arks. She wasn't sure which side slaughtered those refugees, but Jed Mason had been trying to save them. Perhaps his side deserved the benefit of the doubt. Eve didn't know what fate awaited her in Washington. Maybe the president would be forever grateful that she helped save his life. Or maybe they'd shoot her for taking up arms against Mason's government, twice, and then fleeing the Brooklyn sector. Whatever happenned Eve had one very good reason for staying on this plane, she had nowhere else to go.

On the plane to Washington the soldiers fed Eve. It was powdered eggs and milk, possibly left over from World War II. Eve sat by the window, saw Washington from above. It had been less than three years since Eve came here at the special event for teenage Ark workers That was the first, and until today the only time, she saw Jed Mason up close. Eve had admired the president back then. And now, she had seen more of his work. The city looked different, a massive wall kept people out, or in. Not unlike the warlords and mini-kingdoms that were popping up all over what was once the United States of America. The city seemed to be mostly in decay. People saw little point in proper maintenance or up-keep. The new colliseum did look impressive, a monument man built to himself. In three months it would likely b rubble. But. for now, it was beautiful.

As soon as the plane landed the doctors wheeled Jed Mason off. Eve didn't know where he was being taken, probably to a hospital where they could operate properly. From what she could tell, he was in relatively stable condition. After he was away the soldiers escorted Eve to the White House. she didn't know why they were bringing her here. Maybe George Mason wanted to personally thank her, maybe something else. They brought her to a small room. From all the books on the shelf, it might've been a library, although smaller than Eve would've thought for the White House. To her suprise, Zoey Allen came into the room with a video camera. She soon hugged Eve tightly.

.

Zoey: Thank you for saving Jed.

Eve: No problem, I didn't even know it was him at the time. I heard he's your sometimes boyfriend.

Zoey: He's actually my husband. My only husband, despite what you might've heard. We've had to keep our marriage quiet, it's complicated.

Eve: I can keep a secret. So, why am I here?

Zoey: The president is very grateful for how you saved his son. He's considering giving you sanctuary here. But he knows you fought against us in the war, rebelled against the sector government. He has to know you won't betray us.

Eve: Is my word good?

Zoey: Maybe. I'd like to document your story on camera. Just be truthful, and he'll decide. Should we get started?
