Chapter 340
.
Over the next few hours Eve told her story to Zoey. There wasn't much to tell of the first 14 years so she jumped pretty quickly to Febuary 4th. Eve told everything, Adam hitting her, her mother's suicide, cutting school, shoplifting, converting from catholicism to islam, working on as Ark, Ravenwood, the black-market, Amy, sidewalk counselor, becoming an informant for Murphy, her father's death, murdering Karen, the Texas oil rig, rebelling, the Brotherhood of the Wolf, being an informant for the Texas Rangers, the plague, St Patrick's, the collective army, desserting, Camp 81, Tara, Wilkins, the refugees from the mercy clinic, Jamal, bcoming a born-again christian, having Hope, rebelling against the sector government, escaping, giving up Hope, Jamal and Nadia's deaths, Elliot's camp, Gaines, her multiple suicide attempts, and the refugees from the Arks. It seemed hard to believe that all of this happenned in barely three years. Eve became exhausted just thinking about all of it at once.
It was around noon, Eve was still waiting in the room. The door was half-open, Zoey had left. She probably could've escaped, noone would stop her, but she had nowhere else to go. Eve was tired, but tried to stay awake, in case someone had more questions. Then the door opened. A small child, maybe six, was standing outside. Eve recognized her as Rebecca, president Mason's granddaughter, the child of his late daughter Mimi. Eve figured Rebecca got lost. The little girl held her hand out to Eve and said "Nap time." Eve figured she should take this child to her bedroom. Whatever her quarell with the grandfather, Rebecca was an innocent. Eve took Reecca's hand and let her lead the way. They were soon in Rebecca's bedroom when she said "Story time." She handed Eve a children's book. Eve took the book, figuring Rebecca wanted her to read it. But Rebecca took the book back and "read" it to Eve. This reading mostly involved her showing Eve the pictures of animals, she seemed fascinated by the polar bears. Then Rebecca said it was time to check the closet for monsters. Eve began sitting up to check the closet. But Rebecca told Eve to stay in bed, while she checked the closet. She finally said "No monsters." Eve didn't really understand Rebecca's nap time ritual. Then she relized that Rebecca was trying to put Eve down for a nap. When Eve asked about it Rebecca said how Eve looked tired, when you get tired you get cranky, when you get cranky you get in trouble. Rebecca didn't want Eve to get in trouble, not after she saved uncle Jed. Eve decided to play along with this child's game. Eve layed down in the bed and closed her eyes. She'd planned to return to her room after Rebecca left. But while laying down with her eyes closed, sleep came.
Eve thought she would just close her eyes until Rebecca left or fell asleep. She underestimated how tired she actually was. After what seemed like an instant she heard Rebecca say it was time to get up for breakfast. Eve opened her eyes, noon seemed like an odd time for breakfast. Then she realized, the sun was lower than it had just been. Was it possible she had slept almost an entire day. She did feel more refreshed now. Eve decided to follow Rebecca to where they were having breakfast. To her suprise they went to the White House dining room, where the president and the first lady were. Eve was shocked. Here he was, George Mason himself. Three years ago, she'd been so excited to actually meet him. Now, those emotions came back, so didanger at all he'd done. More than ten million collectivists dead, yet he also seemed to be a loving grandfather. All these emotions came to Eve at once. She stutterred and nervously shook his hand. He pulled upa chair for her and invited Eve to sit down for breakfast.
.
Mason: Eve, I want to thank you for helping to save my son, and Rebecca seems to like you. Thak you for bringing her to safety, she has a habit of wandering off. I realize there has been some bad blood between us from the war. I'd like to put it behind us. I understand you have worked as a secretary. If you'd like to stay here and work as a secretary, you're welcome to stay. Does that sound good to you?
Eve: Yes sir. I'd like to stay here and work as a secretary.
