I'm so sorry it's been so long. Unfortunately I've been working from 8am-11pm 7 days a week lately, which is unbearable as you can imagine. I'm currently poorly in bed so here's an update for you!
'Sky, why won't she stop crying?' Zed called from the sofa as I sorted out Luna's bottle of milk.
'Just keep rocking her.'
'I am, it's not helping.'
'She knows you're anxious!' I laughed. 'Just relax your arms for her and talk to her.'
'Talk to her? She won't understand a word I'm saying!'
'Yes she will, she's not stupid.' I tested the temperature of the milk on the back of my hand.
'I know, but she's a baby!' He appeared in the kitchen, rocking baby Luna back and forth as she cried.
'Pass her here.' I held out my arms and the baby was passed to me. I placed her head against my shoulder and gently swayed. She spluttered a few times and then the crying stopped. 'That's better isn't it? You're just ready for your dinner. Good girl.'
Zed rested against the island and sighed. 'How do you do that?'
I smiled. 'If you act freaked out Zed, it'll only make her freaked out. If you relax then she will too. Now pass me that bottle.'
He passed me the bottle and I cradled Luna as she opened her mouth ready for her drink. She found the bottle and sucked on it, hungrily. When she had finished, I passed her back to Zed, who had calmed down. He pulled her close to him and she nestled against his chest. The sight was enough to make anyone's heart melt. And ten minutes later, she was fast asleep.
'See that wasn't so bad, was it?' I whispered as Zed placed her into her crib.
'I guess not.' He replied. 'Though if her diaper needs changing, you're in charge.'
'Hardly seems fair.' I laughed, softly, as we walked out of the nursery.
'Wow, I feel exhausted.' Zed yawned. He sat down on the sofa and I curled up into his arms. He planted a kiss on my forehead and I smiled. 'How do Phee and Yves cope?'
'I guess you just get used to having less energy.' I laughed.
He was silent for a moment. 'How many do you want?'
'Sorry?'
'Kids. How many do you want?'
I looked up at him. 'Why do you ask?'
'Well, in five months time you'll be my wife and I'm guessing at some point we'll have a family.' He kissed my nose and smiled.
'Two.' I replied. 'Preferably a boy and a girl. I'd like them to have each other should anything happen to us.'
'I always saw myself with two girls as gorgeous as their mother.' Zed replied, intertwining his hands with mine.
'Is that because you grew up with loads of brothers?'
'Nope.' He shook his head. 'It's because I want to spend my life surrounded by beautiful women.'
There was a cry from the nursery. I pushed myself off of the sofa.
'I'll get her.' Zed smiled, pushing me back down gently.
'What if it's her diaper?'
'Then I'll change it.' He kissed my lips softly and disappeared into the nursery. That was when I suddenly realised I was growing up, and quickly too.
The next day, the girls had decided we would go shopping. Baby Luna was going to join us and the 'lads' were all heading out to see the Yankees game before we met up for dinner and a night out later. Of course, we headed to Fifth Avenue first.
'So what's the colour scheme for the wedding?' Jenni asked as we walked into Macy's.
'Blue.' I replied with a smile.
'Because it makes Zed think of her eyes.' Phee added with a wink.
'That's adorable!' Jenni cooed as she tickled Luna in her pram.
'So adorable that it's sickening.' Phee stuck her tongue out at me as she looked at the store directory to find out where to go first.
I looked around, my eyes wide. 'We must get something in Macys, just for the bag!'
'Exactly my thoughts.' Jenni smiled.
'We could look at bridesmaid dresses.' I grinned. 'As long as they're not going to have me in debt!'
'Why didn't I think of that?' Phee shook her head in disbelief. 'You're in New York, one of the fashion capitals of the world. We need to look at bridesmaid dresses and your dress as I messed it up last time. I know the cutest bridal store.'
'Sounds perfect.' Jenni said in agreement. 'Now come on, we can't stand here all day! I want to see the famous Macys!'
Macy's was incredible and also incredibly busy. It was hard sticking together, so we split up to find baby blue dresses to match the colour scheme for my wedding. We arranged to meet at the fitting rooms in ten minutes time. As it was spring, pastels were in so it wasn't too hard to find some dresses. There were blue assymetric dresses with longer 'trains' at the back and shorter fronts; knee-length strapless blue dresses with ruffle detailing; blue A-line strapless dresses with a white ribbon around the middle; and simple chiffon long blue bridesmaid dresses with thin straps. I grabbed the ones I liked in the correct sizes and headed towards the fitting rooms.
Jenni had been just as successful as I had, although Phoenix was only holding one dress and she was frowning.
'What's wrong?' I asked her.
'I'm worried I won't lose my baby belly in time, so I only found one dress that would hide it.' She sighed.
'Don't be daft.' I frowned. 'What baby belly?'
'This one.' She grabbed her belly.
'It's not noticeable unless you do that!' Jenni laughed. 'Come on, I've found lots of dresses, let's try them on.'
'Oh my god, you're the girl from the advert!' A girl came out of the fitting room and gawped at me.
'Sorry?'
'The Hollister advert! There's a huge advert with you on it in Times Square! Can I have a selfie with you?'
The girls looked as if they were trying not to laugh.
'Erm.. sure.' I replied with confusion.
'Thank you!' She got out her iPhone and set up the camera, before leaning towards me and snapping away. 'It is so great to meet you!'
'Thank you.'
'Isabella, hurry up!' Someone called from the dresses section.
'Coming mom! Bye.' She smiled at me before hurrying off.
'Well that was new.' Phoenix laughed as I recovered myself. 'We'll have to find you some sunglasses and a baseball cap.'
'Ha. Ha.' I replied, sarcastically. Which photo was it? Was I in a bikini? Was I cuddled up to Sam? My mind filled with worry. It was going to be noticeable in Times Square. The adverts there were huge. My stomach churned.
'Sky, are you coming in? These are for your wedding!' Jenni smiled.
I picked up Luna out of her pram. 'Coming!'
We spent ages in the fitting room. The fitting room assistant even went and got me a chair to sit on, as she clearly felt sorry for me. Luna had fallen asleep in my arms, so I was sat gently rocking her whilst I gave my opinion of the blue bridesmaid dresses. Some were too short, some were too casual and some Phee claimed showed her 'baby belly'.
'I like this one.' Jenni said, opening her fitting room door. The dress was the correct baby blue colour. It was strapless and had a sweetheart neckline. The material was similar to chiffon, only slightly more expensive. It fit tightly across the bust to the waist, where there was a small flower on the left side, before falling to the floor. I had to agree, it was a gorgeous dress.
Phee opened her fitting room door wearing an identical dress. 'I like it too. It's beautiful and very comfortable.'
'You both look beautiful.' I smiled, my eyes watering a little. 'Like princesses.'
Jenni and Phee smiled at each other.
'How much is it?' I asked.
'It doesn't matter.' Phee replied. 'We're paying.'
'You can't do that.'
'Yes we can. You've paid enough towards your wedding already. If you want to buy something, then buy us the shoes.' Jenni smiled.
So I did. Little silver sandals with a medium-sized heel. They were even on sale.
We had lunch in The Loeb Boathouse in Central Park, with a seat overlooking the water. Spring in Central Park was beautiful; flowers were blooming everywhere and the trees were different shades of green. When you were there, it was hard to believe you were in a city. It was a whole world away from the skyscrapers and yellow taxis. We sat together eating pastries and drinking coffee whilst Phee bottle-fed Luna.
'So we are we heading next?' Jenni asked, twirling her spoon around in her capuccino.
'I thought we'd head to the bridal store I mentionned earlier.' Phee replied. It's not far from here.'
'Do we need a reservation?' I asked, taking a photo of the view with my phone.
'Nope.' She shook her head. 'It's only walk-ins.'
The bridal boutique was down a quiet street, with a few cafes and some other small boutiques. The buildings looked old and quaint and there was hardly anyone around; it was ten minutes away from Central Park, but there was not a tourist in sight.
'Hello.' The red-headed shop assistant greeted us when we walked in. She sounded like she was from Brooklyn, despite the black designer dress and pearl earrings she was wearing. 'Welcome to Enchanted Bridalwear. I'm Sarah, how can I help you today?' She spotted Phee and smiled. 'Phoenix Benedict, how are you? And how is your beautiful little girl?'
'We're doing very well thank you, just exhausted.' Phee smiled in response. 'This is Sky and this is Jenni. Sky is marrying my brother-in-law in August and desperately needs a dress. I went into labour last time we were looking!'
'It's lovely to meet you both. What are you looking for Sky?'
'Well, I liked the mermaid-fitted ones last time.' I replied with a smile. 'And I like vintage... maybe some lace?'
'I think we have a few dresses you'll like.' Sarah smiled. 'I'll get you girls some champagne and then we'll get started.' She returned with a bottle of champagne and carefully poured out three glasses.
'Here's to better luck this time.' Phee laughed, holding up her glass.
'Better luck this time.' Jenni and I chorused, and we all clinked our glasses together.
Thirty minutes later, I had found the dress. I thought I had found the dress before, but this time I was more certain than ever. I was stood behind a red velvet curtain in Enchanted Bridalwear wearing the dress I was going to get married in. It was a mermaid-fit, as I had chosen from our previous shopping date. There was a trail of lace around the neckline, which fell in a scoop down the back with some small white buttons leading down to the bottom. There was delicate white mesh on the front leading from the lace trail down to a sweet-heart neckline and a lace bodice which fell to the top of my thighs. Where the dress flowed outwards, the lace was spread out and scattered across the rest of the dress and the small train. There were small dimantes delicately spread across the lace on the dress. It was feminine and sophisticated and had a vintage-feel.
Sarah pulled back the curtain and I turned to face my friends, who gasped in unison.
'That's it, isn't it.' Jenni smiled, her eyes watery.
'It is.' I replied, the emotion washing over me. 'This is the dress I'm going to get married in.'
xx-xx-xx
'So where are we going later?' I asked Phee as we got ready in her bedroom with Jenni for our night out with everyone. Yves had hired a qualified babysitter to look after Luna, so that they were able to join us.
'I think Yves mentionned Ink 48 as there's a rooftop bar.' She replied, straightening up the leather-look trousers she was wearing with a white blouse and a black blazer. She was wearing black boots with a sensible wedge.
'I bet the view is great.' Jenni smiled. Her red hair was pin-straight and she was wearing a black jumpsuit with a black sequin jacket and matching sequin heels.
'It is.' Phee smiled. 'Oh look at us all in our monochrome!'
I was wearing a black strapless top, white short tulle skirt, leather jacket and black heels. We really were a monochrome fashion statement.
'Your outfit is so cute, Sky.' Jenni grinned as she ran a finger through her hair.
I checked my appearance in the mirror and quickly tidied my curls. 'Thank you. No idea if this works in New York or not!'
'Of course it does, you look like you've crossed Carrie Bradshaw with Brooklyn- cool.' Phee grinned. The doorbell rang. 'Ah, that will be the babysitter! Hurry up as we'll have to leave soon.'
'Successful day then?' Jenni smiled. 'Bridesmaid dresses and wedding dress sorted.'
'I know.' I grinned. 'And how nice was Sarah? Offering to ship it free to Vancouver for me.'
'That was super lucky. You're doing well today.'
'I just hope this luck keeps going. It's nice having luck for once.' I replied, grabbing my black sequin clutch bag I had bought in Macys.
'I hope so too.' Jenni grabbed her leather handbag and stood up. 'It's nice things are going well for you, I'm so happy for you.'
'Thank you.'
'Girls, are you ready to go?' Phee called from the other room.
'Coming!'
The plan was to meet in Times Square, as we had a reservation at Olive Garden. This was our first chance to see one of the tourist sights of New York and we weren't disappointed; despite the dark, it was full of colour with screens and adverts everywhere. I sighed with relief when I noticed my face was not anywhere to be seen. Despite the fact that it was the evening, it was still buzzing with tourists and hundreds of yellow taxis filled the roads.
'Hello beautiful.' Zed greeted me with a kiss on the lips. 'Did you have a good day?'
'Yes.' I nodded. 'I've bought my wedding dress.'
'You found one? That's wonderful.' He kissed me again. 'I can't wait to see you in it.'
'I just hope you like it.'
His hand found mine and he squeezed it. 'Of course I will, you'll be wearing it.'
'Come on lovebirds, it's time for dinner!' Jenni called out.
'And I'm hungry!' Bleu added.
'Shall we go?' I asked my fiance, smiling up at him. But his attention was elsewhere.
'Zed what is it?'
I followed his gaze and my face fell. There, in the middle of Times Square, was an advert for Hollister, showing a model in a bikini and a model in swimming trunks. Their arms were round each other and they were gazing each other.
It was Sam and I.
