Sky.
There were no more news announcements over the next two weeks. It seemed that the savant murderers were either learning to lay low or they had become bored. That didn't mean that they weren't in my dreams, though. Every night, I had the same dream.
'Sky!' Zed called out, his voice full of pain.
I tried to get to him, but I just couldn't move. Something was stopping my limbs from moving. 'Zed!' I tried to call but no sound came out.
Two hands grabbed me from behind, grabbing me so hard that I felt my shoulders bruising. I was lifted up and thrown into the back of a black van.
I wasn't sure what the dream meant. I looked it up online, about being kidnapped, but I realised there was no point. I wasn't human, I was a savant. Our dreams would never mean the same things as humans.
I went to college five days a week, as normal, with Zed closely at my side. We didn't go anywhere afterwards. We always went straight home. Jenni had been staying in our guest bedroom, as we were concerned for her safety as a savant. Phee called me everyday and I was always surprised with how much clearer her voice was on the other end of the line. She only used her cell now and, whenever I forgot to call her cell, no one picked up on the landline.
'On Saturday, we will be performing our new pieces in a recital in the campus theatre. I'm sure you have all been rehearsing whenever possible.' West Jones, our lecturer for our Modern Music module announced.
Damn it, I completely forgot. Zed cursed in my head.
Me too. I admitted. I didn't want to perform to anyone, let alone a theatre-full of people.
'This will count towards your grade for this semester, so it is vital that you attend. Tickets are available, should parents want to watch, and the music studios are available for rehearsals the rest of this week. I will see you all on Saturday.' West left the room and the students around us packed away their notepads and left the lecture theatre.
'I can't do it.' I told Zed, putting my notebook into my satchel. I pulled the floral skirt of my dress down to cover my thighs.
'It counts towards our grade.' He replied. 'Isn't there a piece you already know that you can perform? That's what I'm going to do.'
I looked at his facial expression. 'You saw it, in the future. What do I perform?'
He gave a crooked smile. 'Well it's a bit ironic...'
'Okay...'
'Ordinary People by John Legend.' He grinned, making me laugh.
'You can't be serious.'
'Oh but I am!'
We grabbed lunch in the cafeteria and then waited for Jenni to finish her lecture. She headed over to us with Bleu, George and Rob in tow.
'Not seen you two in a while.' Bleu commented. 'What gives?
George shifted awkwardly beside Jenni and I couldn't help but notice they weren't as cosy as they had been recently.
'Just been busy.' Zed shrugged. Rob made eye contact with me and I knew he was aware why we had been 'awol' the past few weeks.
'Well don't blow off your mates.' Bleu play-punched Zed in the arm. 'Hear you two have a recital on Saturday.'
'I've got tickets.' Jenni smiled, reassuringly. 'What are you performing? Or is it a surprise?'
'It's a surprise.' Zed replied with a smile. 'I thought we could go and get something nice to wear from the mall?'
'Dude, you sound just like a girl.' Rob laughed.
'It's a good idea.' Jenni smiled. 'Can I come?'
'Of course, you're my advisor.' I laughed.
'Well we'll catch you later then.' George said, grabbing Rob's shoulder.
'Actually, I need to go to the mall too.' Rob replied. 'So I'll catch you guys later.'
'Whatever.' Bleu shrugged, walking off with George.
'What's going on with you and George?' I asked Jenni as we headed to the parking lot.
'I don't know.' She sighed. 'I'm just not sure we're meant to be, you know?'
'Is this about your soulfinder?'
'I don't know... I've got this feeling that maybe he's close by.'
'Are you coming?' Rob called from the car. I pulled my coat tighter to my body to protect from the cool breeze and we rushed off to the parking lot.
xx-xx-xx
Zed.
'Have you had any more visions?' Rob asked as the girls were in their tenth shop. We were stood in the doorway, looking around for anything suspicious.
'No.' I replied, honestly. 'I just wish I could work out where we are when they come for her.' My stomach twisted, nervously.
'Well you know you're outside and that it's a clear night.' Rob sighed. 'I guess, just keep her inside at night. Does she know your family are here?'
'No.' I replied. I had managed to hide that from Sky for as long as possible and I was trying to keep it that way. I didn't want her to worry and I knew that she would if she found out my whole family were in Vancouver, trying to protect her from the mysterious savant men.
'What if she finds out?'
'I don't know.' I replied, honestly.
I looked across the shop and saw Jenni and Sky laughing and smiling as they held up some hideous-looking dresses. That was how I wanted her to be: happy. They picked up a selection of normal-looking dresses and disappeared into the fitting room. That was when I saw Yves entering the shop behind me with a buggy.
'Yves, what are you doing here?' I asked.
His mouth made an 'o' shape. 'I've come to meet Phee.'
'She's in here?!'
xx-xx-xx
Sky.
There was quite a queue for the fitting room, much to my annoyance. I just wanted to find a nice dress to wear and then get home. I was hoping that being out of the house would be nice, but I was starting to feel anxious and paranoid. I was wondering if it was my lack of sleep making me feel that way. I nearly dropped my clothes I had taken into the fitting room when I saw a familiar face.
'Phee, what are you doing here?'
'Sky?! What are you doing here?!' Her eyes widened.
'Well I live in Vancouver... whereas you live in New York...'
She shifted awkwardly on her feet. 'We just came for a vacation.'
'Phee, why are you lying to me?'
Jenni looked between us, awkwardly.
'How many?' The sales assistant asked me, looking at the dresses I was holding.
'Four.' I replied. 'I'll speak to you later.' I said to Phee, before disappearing into the fitting room.
My good mood had disappeared. I felt irritated and betrayed as I tried on my dresses. The first three just made me feel uncomfortable, although this could have been because of my bad mood.
'Are you going to show me this one?' Jenni asked, sounding hopeful, from the otherside of the lilac curtain.
I looked in the mirror. The dress was white with light blue baroque embroidery. It had a net-skirt which fell just above the knee. It was like a princess dress. (AN: Chi Chi Clothing website- Tiana Dress).
'I think I like this one.' I replied, pulling back the curtain carefully. Jenni grinned on the other side.
'It's perfect. Want me to go and get Zed?'
'No,' I replied, 'I want this to be a surprise.'
Saturday came around too quickly. Surprisingly, the nightmares had stopped so I took this as a positive sign. Lectures finished on Wednesday, so we went most of Thursday and Friday rehearsing for our recital. Zed wouldn't let me listen to his rehearsals, as he said he wanted to surprise me. On Saturday, we arrived at the theatre early to get changed and ready. As Zed wasn't allowed in the female changing rooms, Jenni had been sent to keep me company.
'You have a missed call from Phee.' She pointed out as she ran mousse through my hair.
'I've had a lot of missed calls from her.' I replied. 'I'm not speaking to her until she is honest with me.'
'Did you ask Zed why they were here?'
'He said it was a vacation too,' I frowned. 'I don't understand what they're hiding.'
'You don't think it's because of your dream do you?' Jenni bit her lip and let go of my long, blonde curls.
I made eye contact with Jenni in the mirror. 'Maybe you're right. Maybe Zed got paranoid.' I stood up and brushed down my princess dress. 'I still wish they would be honest with me.'
'I know you do.' She shot me a sympathetic smile. 'You look incredible, by the way.'
'Sky Bright, you're nearly up.' A crew member said, adjusting her headset.
'Okay.' I smiled, feeling nauseous.
'You'll be great.' Jenni squeezed my arms. 'And I'll be in the wings waiting for you, as will Zed.'
I wriggled my toes in my silver heels and took a deep breath, before walking out into the wings. A girl in my class finished her piano performance, bowed and then headed off the stage in the applause.
'And announcing Sky Bright with her cover of John Legend's Ordinary People.'
The audience went quiet and time seemed to slow down as I walked onto the stage, trying not to fall over because of my shaking legs. I sat down at the piano and looked out at the different colours surrounding the audience. It made my eyes hurt. I didn't look at the music. I didn't need it. I looked over at the wing and saw Jenni smiling, encouragingly. But where was Zed? The audience were looking at me, waiting, so I couldn't wait any longer. I took a deep breath and my fingers starting moving along the piano keys like clockwork.
'Boy I'm in love with you
This ain't the honeymoon
Past the infatuation phase
Right in the thick of love
At times we get sick of love
It seems like we argue everyday
I know I misbehaved
And you made your mistakes
And we both still got room left to grow
And though love sometimes hurts
I still put you first
And we'll make this thing work
But I think we should take it slow
We're just ordinary people
We don't know which way to go
Cuz we're ordinary people
Maybe we should take it slow
This time we'll take it slow
This time we'll take it slow. '
I looked up and saw Zed standing in the wings, a false smile on my face. My heart sank, but I continued.
xx-xx-xx
Zed.
I was running stupidly late. I could hear Sky's beautiful and angelic voice already. I rushed to the wings, taking my position next to Jenni. My heart stopped.
The dress. I'd seen it before. In my vision. Sky looked up at me and I faked a smile. Hurt crossed her face and I knew my smile hadn't worked.
'This ain't a movie no
No fairy tale conclusion ya'll
It gets more confusing everyday
Sometimes it's heaven sent
Then we head back to hell again
We kiss then we make up on the way'
Feeling paranoid, I found myself looking around the wings and the audience for anything which would strike me as unusual.
'I hang up you call
We rise and we fall
And we feel like just walking away
As our love advances
We take second chances
Though it's not a fantasy
I still want you to stay'
I looked across the stage at my beautiful soulfinder, who was avoiding making eye contact with me, putting her all into this incredible performance. What was I going to do? Until now, I hadn't known when my vision was going to happen but all the pieces were fitting together.
'We're just ordinary people
We don't know which way to go
Cuz we're ordinary people
Maybe we should take it slow (Take it slow oh oh ohh)
This time we'll take it slow (Take it slow oh oh ohh)
This time we'll take it slow'
I pulled my phone out of my pocket and sent a text to all of my family members:
I don't know when it is going to happen, but they're coming for Sky tonight. I need back up.
I put my phone away, hoping that my family members would see my call for help. These men were powerful, and I had no idea just how many of them would be in their army by now.
'Take it slow
Maybe we'll live and learn
Maybe we'll crash and burn
Maybe you'll stay, maybe you'll leave,
maybe you'll return
Maybe another fight
Maybe we won't survive
But maybe we'll grow
We never know baby you and I'
My phone buzzed and my dad's name appeared on the screen.
On our way. Don't let Sky out of your sight.
I edged closer to the stage, not worried that some audience members may have been able to see me.
xx-xx-xx
Sky.
'We're just ordinary people
We don't know which way to go
Cuz we're ordinary people
Maybe we should take it slow (Heyyy)
We're just ordinary people
We don't know which way to go
Cuz we're ordinary people
Maybe we should take it slow (Take it slow oh oh ohh)
This time we'll take it slow (Take it slow oh oh ohh)
This time we'll take it slow'
My fingers played the last note and the crowd errupted into applause and cheers. I stood up, my body shaking with adrenaline, and smiled before taking a curtzy. Simon and Sally were waving and cheering at the back of the theatre, and the other strangers in the room seemed to be so impressed that they were standing. I sighed with relief, before disappearing off of the stage.
'You were incredible!' Jenni squealed, pulling me into a hug. I pulled back from my friend and looked up at Zed, his eyes filled with love and... concern.
He kissed me, pulling me close.
'And next up we have Zed Benedict performing Ed Sheeran's Thinking Out Loud.'
Zed pulled away from me and sighed.
I smiled. 'Good song choice.'
He ignored my comment. 'Promise me you'll stay with Jenni and stay where I can see you.'
'Of course.' I replied, confused. 'Good luck.'
Zed grabbed the guitar being held out for him and walked onto the stage. He looked so sexy in his crisp white shirt, which showed off all of his muscles, tie and smart trousers. 'This song is for the girl who is my whole world.' There were some high-pitched screams in the audience, which made Jenni and I giggle.
'When your legs don't work like they used to before
And I can't sweep you off of your feet
Will your mouth still remember the taste of my love?
Will your eyes still smile from your cheeks?
And, darling, I will be loving you 'til we're 70
And, baby, my heart could still fall as hard at 23
And I'm thinking 'bout how people fall in love in mysterious ways
Maybe just the touch of a hand
Well, me—I fall in love with you every single day
And I just wanna tell you I am.'
He looked over in my direction with the gold aura surrounding him as he sang the chorus.
'So honey now
Take me into your loving arms
Kiss me under the light of a thousand stars
Place your head on my beating heart
I'm thinking out loud
That maybe we found love right where we are.'
His husky voice fitted the song perfectly and his fingers worked like magic over the strings of his guitar. Zed turned back to face the audience and there was some more hysterical screaming from the crowd.
'He's very talented.' A male voice beside me said.
I turned in confusion. Where had Jenni gone? I looked around and noticed that myself and the teenager wearing black were the only people left stood in the wings. 'Did you see where my friend went?'
'She must have gone to the bathroom.' He replied with a shrug.
Jenni would have said something if she had gone though. This was completely unlike her. Feeling concerned, I headed backstage, hoping Zed would understand why I had missed the rest of his performance. I saw a group of people from my course, waiting around for their performance. 'Have you seen Jenni?' They all shook their heads.
The fire exit was open next to the bathroom, so I headed outside. The night sky was clear and you could see the plough and other constellations shining above us. 'Jenni?' I called out into the darkness.
'Sky!'
I followed her voice.
'Oh my god, Sky, can you believe it, I met my soulfinder!' She squealed, hurrying towards me.
'Who?' I replied confused.
'Sam!' She called out. Sure enough, my ex-friend Sam appeared from round the corner.
'Hello, Sky.' He replied, cooly.
'Are you sure?' I asked, Jenni.
'We can speak to each other in our minds.' She smiled. 'And it feels like a magnet! I told you I would meet him soon.'
'That's great. Now let's get back inside and hear the rest of Zed's performance. It's safe in there.'
The fire exit slammed shut behind me and my eyes widened.
'I thought you might like to meet some of my new friends.' Sam smiled. 'I know they would like to meet you.'
Then, out of the shadows, came two of the men I had seen before. In my nightmares.
