AN: Don't hate me too much Sky/Zed pairers, I promise this will have a happy ending... eventually!
Sky.
My first night in my new room, I slept like a baby. When I woke up, I felt fresh and relaxed and I felt even more alive when I had enjoyed my long shower. The bathroom was right next to the bedroom, so I decided it wasn't going to be a big deal if I left my clothes in my bedroom. I wrapped the white towel around myself and slipped out of the bathroom, only to bump straight into Troy.
'I'm sorry.' I apologised, my cheeks burning with embarassment. This was not part of the plan.
'It's okay.' He smiled, and I couldn't help but notice his eyes wandering over my damp body. 'Did you sleep okay?'
'Like a baby.' I replied, honestly.
'Good, busy day today.'
'Oh?'
'I signed you up for a battle class this afternoon, I hope you don't mind.'
'A battle class?'
'It teaches you how to fight.' He explained. 'Lot's of people are doing it, though you've got your own personal trainer.'
'Troy, you shouldn't be giving me all this special treatment.' I sighed. 'You know what happened yesterday.'
'Which is precisely why this class is so important for you.' He replied, kissing my forehead. 'Besides, you're very valuable so I need to keep you safe.'
I suddenly became very aware that I was still stood in my towel, so I made my excuses and headed to the safety of my bedroom. I looked over to the bed, where a slightly different outfit to usual was laid out; black yoga pants and a black sports crop top. I opened my drawers, searching through them. It looked like I wasn't just any old chess piece now, I had clearly been upgraded. I was no longer wearing uniform.
'Oh great.' I sighed when I entered the training room. Amber was stood on the mat, stretching. 'So you're my personal trainer?'
'It would seem so.' She replied. 'Don't worry, I'm not too thrilled about it either. But, you're in good hands. I am the best fighter we have.'
'This is going to be a disaster. I am the clumsiest person alive.' I thought back to a memory of falling out of a raft, but I couldn't remember how I had got back into the boat again.
'Well then, this will be fun.' She smirked.
It wasn't fun. For Amber, perhaps. She got to pretend to attack me so that I could use my self-defence moves on her. And she got to demonstrate punches and kicks, leaving me to hold the punch bags. I was quite relieved when the class was over and I had managed to survive it. Five hours of non-stop training. I sank into my chair and sipped at my bottled water.
'You didn't do too bad for a beginner.' Amber commented, with a smile. 'If those girls come near you again, at least you'll be able to protect yourself.'
Troy walked in through the door, a smile on his face. 'So how did we do, ladies?'
'Not too bad.' Amber replied. 'She isn't ready for the front line, but she's pretty good for a short-arse.'
I raised an eyebrow at her. 'Thanks.'
Amber's eyes wandered over Troy and I could see she was enjoying his muscle t-shirt and tracksuit bottoms combo. It was the first time I had seen him dressed casually. Her wandering eyes didn't seem to go unnoticed.
'Thanks Amber, that will go in your pay package. You may be excused.' He said, smoothly. She looked at me enviously, and I saw the familiar aura of jealousy surround her. I sighed. 'So care to show me what you've learnt?' He came up closely behind me, his chest pressed against my back. He grabbed my arms, so I clasped his wrists and quickly spun him around so that he was facing me. He grinned. 'Not bad.'
I smiled, glad that I had his approval. 'Thank you.'
'I'm going to be making an announcement in the cafeteria later.' He said, his voice turning all serious. 'I want you to come with me.'
I bit my lip, thinking back to the previous day.
'Nothing is going to happen.' He said, squeezing my hand. 'After all, no one would dare hurt you when I am by your side.'
I wasn't sure what the announcement was, but it had to be important, because an outfit had been laid out on my bed when I got out of the shower. The signature black leather trousers were there, but with a black corset-style tube top. It made me think of the Halloween costume I had worn with Jenni the previous year. I put on the outfit, completing it with the small heeled boots that had been left out. I was thankful the heels were small, as it saved the embarrassment of falling over.
I walked on one side of Troy, with Amber on the other, and I noticed two blonde gentleman accompanying us with the guards. One looked familiar, from the night of my recital, but I was not sure of names. The journey to the cafeteria was quick and when we arrived, people were eating their dinner. It reminded me that I hadn't eaten since lunchtime and my stomach growled in objection. The room fell silent as Troy stood out of the platform. He grabbed my hand and pulled me beside him.
'Good evening.' He said, greeting the other savants in the room. 'I have some important news which I need to share with you.'
xx-xx-xx
Zed.
I looked up at the man with dark hair and instantly recognised him from my visions. He was stood next to the same brunette I had been seeing, the one with the distinctive blue eyes that pierced right into your soul. I could have sworn she made eye contact with me before looking away. Something about her seemed so familiar.
'As you know, we have been building our empire up slowly over the past few years. We built this center where we could all be safe as savants together, without having to pretend to be something we are not. Over the last few months, we have grown to nearly five hundred savants, and I thank you for that.' There was a cheer and then the dark-haired man continued. 'Our battle will be coming soon. The fight of our lives, the fight for equality! There are people searching for us and they have savants on their side. They do not yet know where we are, but I'm sure it won't take them long. Over the next week, you will be spending your hours training in every possible way in preperation for what is to come and, if they are not here next week, I plan to move us back to the mainland to fight for what we believe in!'
The crowd errupted into applause and cheers and the dark haired man stepped away from the edge of the platform. He kissed the brunette girl on the cheek and she followed him out of the room.
'Zed?' A girl with raven black hair approached me.
'How do you know my name?' I asked with confusion.
'Zed, it's Jenni, Sky's friend...' She frowned.
'I'm sorry, I don't know you and I don't know anyone called Sky.' I sat back down and ate the rest of my food.
xx-xx-xx
Sky.
The constant training over the next few days was draining. Building my telekinesis, fight training, working out, and monitoring the moods of the other savants to ensure that no one was going to snap. No one called me Sky. I had been promoted to Miss Bright, and people were afraid to talk to me, which is what worried me the most. Jenni saw me when she could, but we were both so busy. I'd hardly even seen Troy, as he kept sneaking off to secret meetings I hadn't been invited to.
'Hey gorgeous, I made you dinner.' Troy smiled when he appeared in my doorway on Friday night.
'I'm in my pyjamas.' I laughed, looking at the black silk shorts and vest I was wearing.
'So get changed.' He grinned. 'Come on, don't let the food go cold.' He disappeared out of the room, leaving me to get changed. I quickly slipped into one of the little black dresses hanging in my closet, and walked into the dining room to join him. He handed me a glass of wine and admired my outfit, silently. 'I feel like I've hardly seen you.'
'It's been a busy few days.' I admitted.
'I'm sorry, that's why I want to make it up to you.' He disappeared into the kitchen and came out with two plates of spaghetti bolognese. 'And making it up starts with this.'
We spoke about what we had missed out on over the last few days, whilst we enjoyed our dinner and drank our wine. When we were finished, we went into the living room and sat down on the couch together. That was when I noticed the gap on my finger.
'I could have sworn there was a ring on my finger the other day.'
'Was there?' Troy raised an eyebrow. 'How odd, I've never noticed that.'
'Maybe it was my imagination.' I sighed, but I wasn't sure at all.
'What would you like to do tomorrow?' He asked, tucking a loose strand of hair behind my ear. 'If you could do anything at all, what would it be?'
'To get out of his stuffy building.' I laughed. 'And see the sky.'
'Okay.'
'Okay?'
'That's what we will do tomorrow.' He smiled and kissed my cheek. 'I'll take you out, maybe show you the island.' I grinned. Going outside was just what I needed after a hectic week.
When I woke up the next morning, I didn't hesitate to get out of bed. I wasn't even phased by the fact that I had woken up at seven AM. Troy wouldn't be awake for a while, so I slipped on my black jeans, combat boots and a black tank top and hurried off to tell Jenni the good news. She would be awake and getting ready for breakfast. I ran down the corridor but due to clumsiness, I crashed into someone.
'I'm so sorry...'
'Zed.' The tall wolf-like man said, looking down at me. 'What's the rush?'
'Sorry, I'm just excited to be getting out of the building today.' I laughed.
'Oh.' He replied, his voice gruff.
'Sorry again.' I smiled, before continuing down the corridor. He wasn't particularly thrilled to me talking to me, clearly.
I banged on Jenni's door and a disgruntled Sam opened it. 'Sky?'
'Is Jenni up?
'Of course.' He replied, shaking his head. 'Have you seen the time?'
'Yes.' I smiled. He ran his hand through his hair and stepped aside, letting me in.
Jenni was lying on the couch, reading a book. 'Sky, what are you doing here? I've not seen you in days!'
'Hello to you too.' I smiled, sitting down beside her.
Sam left the room, closing the door firmly behind him.
'How's life in hell?' Jenni asked, sitting up on the couch.
'Sorry?'
'Is Troy still flirting with you?'
'Well yes...'
'God, that jerk.'
'He's not a jerk.' I replied with a frown.
'I'm sorry, what? He kidnapped you, took you away from your fiance-'
'Kidnapped? Fiance? Jen, what on earth are you talking about.'
Her eyes widened. 'Oh no.' She walked over to her chest of drawers, pulled something out and came back to me. 'Sky, do you know what this is?'
'It's a ring.' I replied. 'Looks a bit like the one I thought I was wearing the other day.'
'It's your engagement ring, Sky. I took it from you to keep it safe.'
'Engagement ring? I'm engaged to Troy?'
'No, you're engaged to Zed!'
'Zed? That guy I crashed into this morning?'
Jenni's eyes were filled with concern. 'Oh Sky, he's got to you too. First Zed and now you. Have you slept with him?'
'No!' I replied. 'But what if I had? You've completely lost your mind and you're creeping me out a bit. Maybe you should come with me and Troy today, get some air from outside.'
'You're going outside?'
'Yes, he promised I could choose whatever I wanted to do today.' I smiled. 'Isn't that nice of him?'
'Sky, you don't get it. I know it's hard to understand, but you are being held hostage and he's playing you like he's playing the rest of us. You're a chesspiece in his 500-people game.'
'You're wrong.' I frowned. 'You have no idea what you're talking about.'
'Sky.'
'No Jen, I'm out of here. We'll talk when you're feeling better.' I stood up and left, slamming the door shut behind me.
xx-xx-xx
Troy.
It was weird how Sky made me feel. Sure, it started off as a game. She was going to be my secret weapon, the one that no one figured would be with her child-like eyes like a Japanese cartoon character. But, the more time I spent with her, the more I was learning about her. She was the girlfriend you could take home to your mum, without worrying she won't approve. She was kind, caring, witting and very attractive. I felt a bit guilty about wiping her memory clean of Zed, but I needed her on my side. No, I wanted her on my side and I wanted her to love me. Was that too much to ask? That's why I promised her I would take her outside. I wanted her to be happy.
Sky stormed through the door, looking hot and flustered. She groaned as she shut it.
'Are you okay?' I asked, walking towards the hallway.
'Yes.' She lied.
'What's wrong?'
'I just had an argument with Jenni.' She replied, her eyes sad. 'It's no big deal.'
'Are you sure?'
She nodded. 'I'm going to go and change, what's the weather like?'
'22 degrees celcius, unusually warm, and sunny.' I replied, feeling concerned. 'Do you want any breakfast?'
'Sure
I was never going to understand girls and their fights. I cooked eggs, bacon and toast for breakfast, determined we would eat something substantial before going out for the day. I put in on the table and she walked in the room in a black crop top, black shorts and her combat boots. If her hair had been tied up, she would have reminded me of Lara Croft. She sat down and the table and tucked into her food.
'Do you want to talk about it?'
'No.' She shook her head. 'I don't want to ruin today.'
I didn't say anything. Neither did she. We spent the rest of breakfast in absolute silence. When we were finished, I got changed into my black skinny jeans and a tank top, which seemed to surprise her. She raised an eyebrow at me when I met her in the hallway.
'What?' I laughed.
She smiled. 'Didn't strike you as a tank top guy.'
I shrugged. 'Whatever. Are you ready to go?'
'Are we going by ourselves?' She looked hopeful, and I was disappointed with my answer before I said it.
'It's not safe enough.' I replied, honestly. If the Benedicts were to come across us, finding out we were on an island off the coast of Los Angeles, it would be hard to fight them by ourselves, especially if they had back-up. 'It's just two men, I promise. You won't even know they're there, I'll make sure of it.'
Her mouth formed a thin line. 'Okay.'
We didn't use the main corridor to get to the exit. I didn't want to cause a disturbance, especially if people saw that we were off to enjoy a day off whilst they were all training hard. When we reached the exit, our security for the day were waiting for us.
Marcus, my head of security with his white blonde hair smiled. 'Good morning boss, morning Miss Bright. I hope you don't mind that I brought along our new trainee today. His visions are becoming quite useful.'
On his left stood Zed, in his black trousers, black t-shirt and black combat boots uniform. He looked at me with a poker face. Today was going to be fun.
xx-xx-xx
Zed.
I don't know why I had agreed to accompany the 'boss' and his girl on their date. Stood by the exit door, I really wondered why I had agreed to do so. She had smiled at me with her perfect white teeth and her sparkling blue eyes, before following Troy up the ladder to freedom. The only thing that kept me positive was the thought of getting some fresh air and some sun. I remembered spending days white-water rafting with my family back in Wrickenridge and I missed that. I loved the outdoors and hated being stuck inside training for a battle. I climbed up the ladder last, disappointed to have Marcus' butt in my face. I would have preferred to be behind Sky, or Miss Bright as I had to refer to her. She looked like she had a nice butt.
The light was almost blinding when we reached outside, clambering over the cliff face. The sky was completely blue and the sun was glowing in the middle of it. The view was glorious and I knew that Sky agreed. Her face lit up as she took in the incredible view around us; the mainland on the horizon and the other islands near by, some just jagged rocks and others covered with grass, trees and flowers. There was no sign of civilisation and I noticed that ours was hidden inside a cliff, hidden away from any prying eyes.
xx-xx-xx
Sky.
I could have just stayed on top of that cliff and admired the view all day. It was beautiful. The ocean was different shades of blue and there were white, sandy beaches below us.
'Shall we go?' Troy smiled, reaching out for my hand. I took it and we carefully walked down the jagged slope to the bottom of the cliff-face. Looking back up at where we had come from made everything look even taller than it was. Marcus and Zed seemed to be in deep conversation behind us, whilst carrying a large black rucksack, or at least pretending to be.
Two small grey foxes scampered past us on the path in front, before disappearing into the bushes.
'It's so peaceful here.' I commented, taking in the surroundings. There was no sign of any other humans on the island. Troy had picked the perfect place to build a hideout.
He led me to a beach covered with the whitest sand I had even seen. It made me wonder if we were in the carribean. He climbed on top of a large rock, pulling me up to join him. Then he held his hand out towards our 'security'. Marcus and Zed stopped in the clearing of the trees and sat down in the shade. Troy turned back to me and smiled, taking a seat on the rock. He patted the space next to him. I sat down beside him and looked out at the ocean, watching it dance across the sand. The sea was calm and it was relaxing to listen to. There was a boat out on the horizon and it reminded me of being in a canoe, but that was all I remembered.
'Penny for your thoughts?' Troy's voice broken through my thoughts.
I looked up at him, through my dark eyelashes. 'I'm just thinking about how beautiful it is here.'
He smiled a crooked smile and brushed a loose strand of hair out of my face. I kicked off my boots and stood up, removing my shorts and top so that I was in my black bikini. 'I'll race you to the water!'
'Now that's hardly fair.' He laughed, hurrying after me. He left his trousers and tank top across the rocks and ran up behind me, lifting me into the air and throwing me over his shoulder.
xx-xx-xx
Zed.
I wasn't sure why I felt so sick watching them in front of me. And as if my mind was answering my own question, it sent me into a vision.
'Something about you seems so familiar.' She whispered through the dark. 'I'm not sure what it is... I just feel like we knew each other before.'
'I know, me too.' I replied, trying to keep my voice down. If he found out I was with her, having this conversation then we would both be dead.
'Zed, what if it's true, what Jenni has been saying? What if we really are soulfinders?'
I didn't reply verbally. I answered by pressing her lips against mine in a kiss.
I snapped out of my vision and stared at the brunette girl over his shoulder. Maybe she was supposed to be my girl.
