Chapter 359

.

Monday June 16th, 34 days until impact. Eve tried to go about her business. She hoped none knew aout her one night stand with president Mason. Eve knew she seemed nervous, almost everyone did these days. Eve did her job as normal, but news from outside wasn't encouraging. Everyone in D.C. who'd been chosen for the Arks had been evacuated. There were sme women who'd been chosen, but had given birth after the start of the new year. According to Mason's rules, the children were ineligable. What they did with the babies varied. Some brought them on the transport, hoping the Arks would make an exception. Others gave the babies to friends, perhaps they didn't want to know what would happen. And other wmen, murdered their own babies to prevent them from freezing or starving to death. Walker and others were using this infanticide to get the crowd angry, saying they were going to protect these children when they breached the wall. Some of the crowd was dying from starvation, dehydration, infection, yet their numbers increased. They hadn't heard from Jed yet, some feared the worst. Pope Peter II was still trying to raise food for the famine infested areas, but there was only so much to go around. During her lunch Eve had an energy bar, a bottle of water, and a ciggarette. These energy bars were living up to their name, giving people enough strength to keep doing their job. During this lunch Zoey came to see Eve. Zoey seemed angry, she knew about Eve and the president. Eve tried to apologize, but Zoey wasn't interested. She challenged Eve to a pistol duel tomorrow morning.

Eve wasn't entirely sure why Zoey had challanged Eve to a duel. Was it jealously? Over whom exactly? Zoey was polyamorous, she'd made it clear that they were both free to engage in relations with other people. Could Zoey possibly have a thing for the president? Or maybe she was disgusted with Eve for having sex with both father and son. That was when Eve first realized what she'd done, and she became disgusted with herself. Zoey didn't seem to be acting entirely rational, who was these days? But looking back, maybe Zoey was trying to settle some kind of honor. Maybe she deserved this. Eve agreed to the duel.
