CHAPTER SIX: UNEXPECTEDLY
As the president of the class, it was normal for Momo to be ready for the unpredictable.
When her teacher was running late and she needed to get the lesson started on her own. Or like when she has to make sure that everyone turned in their homework before the day had ended.
She knew how to handle things. That was what she was best at. However, Toshiro Hitsugaya, the young prodigy that transferred from another school last year, had just taken her completely by surprise.
It was the end of another normal Friday. All the students had just finished up their cleaning duties and were heading home; excited for the weekend the was awaiting them.
Momo had stayed behind to complete some things that the teacher had asked for her to do. She was the last one in the class, or so she thought.
After finally completing everything, she headed back to her desk to collect her things. As she did so, she suddenly heard a knock at the door. Looking up, she saw her fellow classmate, Toshiro, looking at her with a look that she couldn't quite describe.
"Hinamori-san?" He asked. "May I talk to you for a moment?"
"Hitsugaya-kun?" Momo was a bit shock at him suddenly asking suck a thing. They had been in the same class together for almost six months now and this was the first time they were even alone together. Though, she wasn't going to turn him away. "Of course."
He nodded and stepped in to the class room.
Momo could tell that he was a bit nervous, but she couldn't understand why. "Is everything okay?"
Toshiro only nodded again.
For a moment, none of them said anything. They only stood there, Momo looking at him and Toshiro looking down at his feet. Both of them were trying to find something to say, though not so sure what.
Momo wanted to stay and wait, but she had a deal with her father where they would pick days on when to cook; tonight was her night to cook too. If she didn't get home soon, then she wouldn't have anything prepared for when her father got home.
"Look, Hitsugaya-kun, I'm not sure what it is you need to say, but I'm sure that it's more important." She said, looking at her wrist watch. "However, I really need to get home soon. So if it has anything to do with school work, I'll be more than happy to help you on Monda-"
"I love you." He suddenly said, making her go silent.
Momo wasn't sure what just happened, or why, but she was sure that she was in shock. Or how she was really suppose to handle this.
"W-What?" She stuttered out.
Toshiro looked up from his feet and looked her straight in the eye. "I said that I love you, Hinamori-san. And I would honored if you would go out with me this Sunday."
Again, she had no idea how to react to his words. She was completely lost at what she was suppose to do or say. Sure, it wasn't the first time that a boy were to confess to her, but for some reason, this was the first time that she got so nervous about it.
"Um..Hitsugaya-kun," she said, finally finding her words. "If I may ask, how is it that you have feelings for me?"
"Are you doubting my love for you?" He asked, a bit hurt and a bit angry.
"No!" Momo gasped. "It's not that, it's just, you and I. Well, we're not exactly friends. You haven't spoken two words to me since before now."
Toshiro, for a moment, looked shocked. Almost as though she had said something that was completely foreign to him. After a moment to gather his thoughts, he turned back to her and replied.
"That doesn't matter. What does though, is your answer."
This was the part that Momo hated about boys confessing to her. The rejection. "I'm sorry Hitsugaya-kun, but-"
"Wait!" He suddenly said. Making her stop again. "Before you say what you are about to say, go out with me."
"What?"
"Please. Let me prove myself to you." He said, suddenly taking her hand. "I know you don't feel what I feel now, but I don't want to give up on this feeling just yet."
"Hitsugaya-kun..."
"I love you, Hinamori-san." He said, his grip on her hand tightening. "I believe that, with a bit of time, you'll feel the same way. Please, just give me a chance."
If Momo was surprised before, she was completely in shock now.
She was shocked at his boldness. His determination. What shocked her the most too, was how much her heart was beating at the way their hands still locked together. That had never happened before with the other boys.
Momo tried staying logical like always, but there was this feeling in her heart that urged her to say yes.
So, for the first time in forever, she actually let her heart speak for her, instead of her head.
"I can't believe you said yes!"
Momo had to move her phone from her ear from how loud her friend Rangiku was speaking.
It was Saturday night, and she was laying on her bed talking to her best friend about the date that she had agreed too. The date that was only a nights away from happening.
"What's so wrong with it Ran-chan?" She replied. "I mean, he's not that bad."
"Not that bad? The little twerp hasn't even spoken to anybody in the class. Now he's claiming that your the love of his life?"
"What are you trying to say?"
"To me, it just sounds a bit sketchy."
Momo hated to admit, but her friend sounded right. There was a lot of reasons why this sounds like some sort of set up, but she just couldn't find it in herself to believe it.
"I'm sorry Ran-chan, but I think that he really means it." She spoke, a blush creeping up on her face. "I don't know what it is, but some part of me really believe in him."
"Oh my goodness...Momo, are you falling for him?"
The blush that was on Momo's face escalated from just her cheeks to her ears and neck. She didn't know why, but her heart rate had increased at that question too.
"W-What are you talking about?" She stuttered out. "I barely know the guy!"
"You are! Oh wow! I can't believe it! You have feelings for him!"
"Rangiku, I haven't spoken to him for more than twenty minutes before yesterday. How could you possibly think that I have feelings for him?"
"Sometimes the heart knows something way before the brain does. And to me, it sounds like your heart is trying to say that theirs something special about Mr. Toshiro Hitsugaya."
"That's crazy Ran-chan." Momo said. "It can't be true. It's irrational. Illogical. Just plain crazy."
"Who are you trying to convince? Me or you?"
Momo suddenly had the urge to throw her phone out the window.
She hated how right her friend sounded right now and what made things worse, it really did sound like she was trying to convince herself more than she was her friend.
Maybe it was allergies. Or maybe just jitters from about to go on her very first date tomorrow.
'Yeah. That's it. I'm just nervous.' She thought.
"You still there Momo?"
She was snapped back in to reality by the sound of her friends voice. "Yeah, I'm here."
"Well, I actually have to go. Gin said he was going to call me soon."
"Alright Ran-chan."
"Before I go though, promise me something Momo."
"What is it?"
"If your heart is really trying to tell you something, and I know that it is, don't deny it."
"I'm still not sure what you are trying to say, but I'll do my best."
"You'll find out soon enough. Alright, I'm going to go now. Bye Momo."
"Bye Ran-chan."
With that said, the young teen hung up her phone.
Turning to her clock on her nightstand, she saw that it was getting late. She figured that she should get to sleep now since she had to get up early tomorrow. Or at least, that's what her and Toshiro had set up.
At the thought of the young man, Momo's face heated again like before.
It seemed like since the encounter yesterday, any thought or mention about the boy made her body act up.
'Almost like my heart it trying to tell me something?'
Momo shook that thought out of her head and got up to go into her connected bathroom.
She washed her face and teeth before changing in to her night attire. By the time she got back to her bed, she saw that she had a message on her phone.
"Who could it be?" She asked, flipping her phone open.
She gasped when she saw Toshiro's name at the very top of her screen.
They had exchanged numbers the day before so she could text him her address and so he could give her the important details of their date. Though, she never thought he would be so bold as to text her what he had just did.
"Hinamori-san,
I know it's late, but I just wanted to say that I am very excited for our date tomorrow.
Thank you again for saying yes to me. I promise that you won't regret it.
I hope you sleep well. Good night.
I love you.
-Toshiro Hitsugaya."
Momo wasn't aware of it, but a smile crept up on her lips as she reread the message over and over again.
She was very flattered that he would text such a sweet thing like how he was excited to see her tomorrow. Though, the thing that caught her attention the most, was the small 'I love you' that he slipped in at the end.
As she rested back on her bed, she had thought in the back of her mind. The thought of also not being able to wait to see Toshiro Hitsugaya tomorrow. Especially for their date.
It was Sunday morning. 10:25 AM to be exact.
Walking down the street with flowers in hand, was a very nervous Toshiro Hitsugaya.
He had gotten early to get himself prepared for the very big day that was ahead of him. He had spent hours planning this day out and now, with the flowers he had gotten from his grandmothers garden, he was ready.
Turning at one last corner, he arrived to his destination.
While walking up the Hinamori home, he double checked his outfit for any wrinkles and straightened the lilies out. When he was at the door, he took one more deep breathe before raising his hand up to know softly.
He only waiting a few seconds before the door swung open quickly, revealing a man that could only be Momo's father. This man had a scowl on his face and his arms crossed.
"Can I help you?" The man asked.
"Um.." Toshiro found it hard to get his words out. "Is Momo here?"
"Whose asking for her?"
The white haired teen could only stutter as he tried to make sure that his speech wasn't so off. "My name is Toshiro Hitsugaya, sir. I'm here to take Momo out on a date."
"A date, huh?" The man leaned in close to Toshiro, making him lean back a bit. "What time are you bringing my daughter home?"
"At seven, sir."
"Make it six."
"Six is a much better time."
"Daddy?" Came a voice from behind the man. "Is that Hitsugaya-kun at the door?"
Momo then emerged from the house, and Toshiro's jaw immediately dropped.
She was dressed in a medium length, yellow sundress with white slip on shoes. Her hair that was usually up in a ponytail, was let down and styled into a neat half ponytail. She wore a small amount of make up, only enough to make her skin glow more than it usually does.
His breath was taken away. If he thought she looked pretty in her school uniform, then he definitely thought she looked beautiful now.
"Oh, hello Hitsugaya-kun." She said with a smile while stepping in front of her father. "You're here early."
"Yeah, just thought we could start our day a bit earlier." He replied.
"Are those for me?" Momo gasped, gesturing to the flowers in his hand.
Toshiro suddenly remembered about the flowers he had bought. Holding them up, he gave her a smile and responded. "Yes. I hope that you like them."
Momo took them gratefully, giggling happily as she brought them up to her face to sniff. "Thank you so much. Let me just put these in some water and then we can go."
He nodded then watched as she went back inside her home. He was so focused on his love that he had completely forgotten about the glaring father. That is until he let out a cough, signalling that he was still there.
Toshiro jumped and turned back to the man. "Yes sir?"
"You better treat my daughter with the utmost care and respect." The father warned. "She deserves no less than that."
The younger male then did something that startled him.
He bowed his head to him and responded with as much respect in his tone as he could. "Please rest assured sir. Your daughter is very important to me and I would never do anything to cause her any harm. You have my word that she is in good hands with me."
The man's eyes widened. He never expected something so noble from a mere high school student. When Momo had told him about the date she was going to have, he thought he would really need to scare the boy in order for him to know how lucky he was that his daughter had actually said yes to him.
However, he was beginning to feel much differently now.
"Alright then, good." Said the father. "Remember, she comes home at six. Not a minute later than that."
"Yes sir." Toshiro replied, standing up straight again.
Just then, Momo come back from where she was. This time, with a purse over her shoulder. "Alright Toshiro, we can go now."
"Okay." The said boy turned back the watchful man. Giving another quick bow, he said, "Have a good day sir."
"Good bye daddy." Momo said, giving her father a quick hug and kiss on the cheek. Making him smile in return.
"Have fun sweetie." He replied.
As the two walked off from her house and in the street, the Hinamori father let out a small chuckle.
He really did have feeling that his beloved daughter was in good hands.
"Thank you again for the flowers Hitsugaya-kun." Momo said as they walked towards the bus stop. "I really love them."
Toshiro nodded and smiled at her. "It was no trouble."
"So, where are we going first?" She asked.
"Well, there's this nice cafe in town that I think you would really like." He explained.
"Sounds good to me." Momo said with a smile. "Just lead the way."
From there the two went on the bus that headed into downtown Karakura. Both keeping quiet for different reasons. Momo not knowing what exactly to say and Toshiro too nervous to even start a conversation.
When it came time for them to get off, Toshiro took Momo's hand, almost without thinking. Startling them both, however, neither of them let go. Quickly getting rid of his shock, he began leading her down the streets of their town. Her silently trying to get rid of the blush that was creeping up her cheeks.
The walk to the cafe was short and quick. When they arrived, Toshiro had to let go of Momo's hand to open the door for her. Both of them feeling a little cold at the loss of contact.
"Sit where ever you like, Hinamori-san." He said.
Momo nodded and looked around the cafe. She was quick to choose a seat that was closest to the window.
Continuing to be the gentleman that he was, Toshiro rushed ahead and held her seat for her and helped her scoot it closer to the table. Then went ahead and seated himself across from her.
Not too long after, a waiter came to their table. "Welcome to Lattest Omotesando. My name is Takumi and I'll be your server for today. May I start you off with some drinks?"
"I'll just have an ice water." Toshiro said.
"I'll have the same." Momo replied.
"Very good." Takumi said writing down the orders. He then gave the two menus. "I'll be right back with your drinks and to take your next order."
With that said, he was gone. Leaving the two teenagers in the same silence as before.
Toshiro gulped as he tried to think of a way to start a conversation. "You look very beautiful today, Hinamori-san."
Momo looked down at her outfit then back at him. She smiled and replied. "Thank you, Hitsugaya-kun. You know, you don't have to be so formal with me. Everyone always uses my first name."
"I see." He chuckled. "Please excuse me. I wasn't quite sure what to call you."
"It's fine." Momo replied. "Considering the circumstances, I think it would be alright for you to call me 'Momo'."
"Okay then. Well, in that case, feel free to call me Toshiro."
She smiled. "Alright then, Toshiro."
He seemed rather pleased at hearing his name. "Thank you, Momo."
When he said her name, it caused the two of them to blush. Toshiro blushing because it was the first time he said his crush's name out loud. Momo though, she wasn't quite sure why she was blushing.
She didn't think it would be that important if he called her by her first name. All her friends and family do it. Though, it was different when he said it. It made her heart beat a bit faster and the butterflies in her stomach came back.
Not wanting him to see her embarrassment, Momo immediately went back to looking over her menu. "S-so, what do you suggest would be good?"
Toshiro looked back down to his own menu and replied. "Well, for you, I would suggest the peach cobbler cupcake. Since its your favorite fruit and all."
"How did you know that?" She asked.
He was startled. He had said something she wasn't suppose to hear. "U-um, well, I notice how you always bring a peach in your lunch everyday."
"You noticed that?"
Toshiro nodded.
"I see." Momo smiled at him. "I suppose I'm just as transparent as this window. Seeing how you can notice something so small like that."
For a moment, Toshiro thought that he was back in safe ground. Though, when he saw that smile of hers again, it made him go back into his startled state.
Thankfully, he was saved by their waiter coming back with their drinks. Momo had ordered what Toshiro suggested and he ordered a piece of watermelon cake.
"Is that your favorite fruit?" Momo asked when they were alone again.
"Yes it is." He said. "It brings back a lot of good memories."
"Like what?"
Toshiro thought for a moment. "Well, when I was younger, my grandmother and I would sit on the porch of our house and watch the sunset together. I would eat it like crazy while she tried to make sure that I wouldn't choke on all the seeds."
Momo cooed at that. "That sounds so nice."
"Yeah. It always made those hot summer days bearable." He replied.
"You're not a fan warm weather?"
"Not at all. I prefer the cold."
Momo frowned. "It's actually the opposite for me. I think the cold is a bit too intense for me. I think I like the simpleness of summer instead."
"Well, everyone is entitled to their own opinion." He replied.
She nodded then glanced at her drink; stirring it slowly with her straw. She wasn't sure what to say now.
Thankfully, he did.
"So, what are your interests?" Toshiro asked.
"Interests?"
"You know, your hobbies. What do you do for fun?"
Momo took a moment to think about his question. She smiled when she had an answer. "I really love reading books. Any kind of books actually."
"Wow. Do you have a favorite in particular?" He inquired.
"Not really. There are too many to pick from. It's hard to choose just one."
He nodded. "I understand that. Any other hobbies?"
"Well, I do enjoy dabbling in art." Momo answered. "Particularly sketching."
Toshiro raised his eyebrows in fascination. "Amazing. Do you think I could ever see some of your pieces one day?"
"Of course." She responded with a smile. "Next time we hang out like this, I'll be sure to show you what I'm working on."
"Next time?" He asked hopefully.
Momo quickly caught on to what she just said. Stuttering she began trying to think of an excuse. "Y-You know, like when we're class and we see each other again."
Toshiro looked down in disappointment. "I see."
She wasn't sure what to say after that. She didn't want to make things worse by blabbering something like before again. Though, she really didn't like seeing him like that either. It made her chest tighten uncomfortably.
"Toshiro..." She began.
However, she wasn't able to finish. Their server had come just in time to interrupt her with their orders.
For a while, the two just ate their treats in silence. Momo wanted to comment on how good her cupcake was and thank him for recommending it to her. Though, her words were caught in her throat.
"So," she finally managed to talk out. Making him give her his attention. "Do you have any hobbies?"
Momo saw that he let out a sigh, almost as though he was glad that she finally broke the silence.
"I do, actually." Toshiro answered. "I really like playing soccer. It's something I think I can do long term."
"Interesting." She said. "Are you any of the teams at school?"
He nodded his head. "I'm on the boys team. I'm actually very close to becoming captain. Or at least that's what coach says. He just wants me to wait till I was in a higher grade."
Momo gasped in shock. "That's amazing! You must be astounding out there!"
Toshiro blushed at her comment and rubbed the back of his neck. "Maybe you can come watch me one day. Then you can see for yourself. You know, if you want to."
She felt herself blush. Though, instead of pulling away again, she smiled. "I would love to."
Feeling a flustered, he could only smile back.
After finished their treats, they eventually left the cafe and ventured off to their next destination.
"So where to now?" Momo asked as they walked side by side.
"There's an arcade not to far from here." Toshiro replied. "Would you like to go? If not, then there are other places we can go."
She only gasped happily. "Are you kidding? I love the arcade!"
"Really?"
"Yeah. I know it's a bit childish, but I have always loved all the games."
"There's nothing wrong with that." He said. "I also enjoy playing a few of their games."
Momo smiled at him. Thankful that he didn't think badly at her preference. "Great! Lead the way then."
Walking a couple of blocks, she eventually saw the neon lights of the arcades sign. Feeling excited, she grabbed Toshiro's hand and began running to the entrance.
Behind, Toshiro was blushing and staring at their joined hands. It took him a while to comprehend what was going on, but as soon as he did, he couldn't help but smile at her enthusiasm. It was definitely something that he couldn't help but love about her.
When they entered, Momo was amazed by how big and spacey it was. She had been to a few arcades that were near where she lived, but they couldn't compare to this one. There were games that she recognized and games that were new to her.
She felt anxious to try them out.
As she looked around, Toshiro went to the front counter and ordered enough tokens for him and Momo. Once he had their buckets, he went up to his date and handed her one.
"Which game would you like to play first?" He asked. "The arcade is yours to chose from."
Momo could only grin at him before taking his hand again and pulled him forward.
The next couple of hours was spent with them playing endless games with both of them being overly competitive.
It started out with Momo joking about how she was better than him at Skee-Ball, then it turned into a full fledged contest.
She proved to actually be quite skilled at the game and came through on her promise of being better at it. As well as the pinball machine and dance revolution games. However, Toshiro also proved to be quiet good at a few games as well. Such as air hockey, whack-a-mole, and the racing games.
They continued to play countless others, but with all the fun they were having, they eventually lost track of their silly competition.
Then the time came when they were down to their last token. As they walked around the arcade trying to figure how they should use said token, something suddenly caught Momo's attention.
In the claw machine, there was a small blue dragon plushy that she immediately fell in love with it.
"Hey," she called out to Toshiro. "I know it's selfish, but do you think I can use the token to try and get that toy?"
He stopped and looked into the machine then turned back to Momo. "You really want it?"
She nodded. "I don't know why, but I just really want it. Is that okay?"
"Of course. Better yet, I'll win it for you."
"You don't have to do that."
"I want to. Besides, you're my date."
Momo looked at him in shock. Even though she hasn't been on a date before, she knew that this was a great one so far. She figured it wouldn't hurt to let him give her a small reminder of it.
Smiling, she gave him their last token. "Do your best."
He nodded before starting the game. Slowly and steady, Toshiro a lined the claw as perfectly as he could with the toy. When he was certain he had it, he pressed the decent button.
They watched in anticipation as the claw grabbed hold of the plushy. There was a moment when it was almost dropped, but it made it in time to hole before that could happen.
Momo cheered happily as Toshiro got the toy for her. "Here you are Ms. Hinamori. A brand new plushy, courtesy of your date."
"Thank you so much Shiro!"
That made him stop. "Shiro? What's that?"
"It's my new nickname for you." She said while putting her toy in her purse for safe keeping.
"Yeah, I don't think so."
"Why not?"
Toshiro only shook his head. "It sounds too childish, and I'm sixteen years old. So, no."
Momo laughed. "Well too bad. You are now Shiro to me."
He was about to argue some more, but then he saw her smile and how calling him that made her happy. Also, it sort of pleased him how she was feeling comfortable enough around him to actually give him a nickname.
Sighing, he knew that this was a battle he would lose. "Do what you want."
Happy with his response, she began walking out of the arcade with him following.
"Where to now Toshiro?" Momo asked as they walked out and back into the shining sun.
"I was thinking we could go watch a movie." He replied. "I looked up their showing times and they have a pretty good selection of shows to watch."
She beamed at this. "Alright! It's been a while since I've been to the movies. I can't wait."
After a short bus ride through town, the young teens made their way to the Karakura Movie Theater.
Though it took a while, the two finally decided on a movie. It was one that had a good amount of action for Toshiro and another good amount of comedy for Momo.
"Would you like some snacks?" Toshiro asked as the stood at the concession stand.
She shook her head. "It's fine. I'll just buy myself a small water bottle."
"Are you sure?" He asked. "I don't mind paying for it."
"Its fine." Momo reassured him. "You've been paying for everything all day. I think I can handle buying a some water for myself."
Toshiro, who didn't want to argue any further, nodded. "Alright. I'll wait for you by the theater door."
With that said, the two split their ways.
Momo made her way to the counter and ordered her drink.
While the worker was ringing it up, she nodded her head over to Toshiro and asked. "Is that your date?"
"Huh?" Momo questioned, confused for a moment. When she saw who she was gesturing to, she couldn't help the blush the crept up her cheeks. "Yes, he is."
"You're lucky." The worker said while getting her change. "He's quite handsome. And from the way he keeps looking over here, he must be really into you."
Momo raised an eyebrow in confusion. Turning to her date, she saw that he was indeed watching her. Though, he quickly became bashful when he caught her eye. She watched as he looked down at his feet before looking back up at her with a shy smile on his face.
She couldn't help but smile back. "Yeah. I really am lucky, huh?"
After gathering her money and drink, Momo quickly walked over to Toshiro and together, they entered the theater.
Through out the whole movie, Toshiro could barely keep his attention off of Momo.
He was trying to figure out if things were going good or not. Sure, she seemed to be having fun, but has her opinion about him change at all? Was she having fun with him as just a simple friend or was there something more?
These questions continued to go through his head as the movie progressed. Without him noticing, there was a shocking part of the movie that made Momo jump with slight fright. Before he could ask if she was alright, she reached over and took hold of his hand that was laying on the arm rest.
It startled him, but not enough to make him pull away. For the longest time, he simply stared at their joint hands and he couldn't help but think how perfect they looked together. It was almost as though he was meant to take her hand and never let it go.
He hoped that by the end of the date, she would give him permission to hold her hand whenever he wanted. Which would be all the time if he could.
Sooner than expected, the lights of the theater suddenly turned up in brightness again. Shocking Toshiro a bit.
When Momo made a move to stand up, she saw that their hands were still together. By the look on her face, he could tell that she must have grabbed his hand without thinking and didn't know about it until now.
"Oh, um.." She mumbled out. "I'm sorry. I didn't mean to-"
"It's okay." Toshiro said, interrupting her. "I don't mind."
He gave her hand a little squeeze before standing up; taking her with him. From there, he lead them out of the theater. His hand never letting go of hers.
Momo felt as though she should say something about it, but at the moment, she could bring herself to do it. Deep down, she rather liked having their hands linked like this.
For this time, she would just let her heart win and go on without saying anything.
'Besides,' She thought. 'It's not like this is the first time we held hands.'
Thinking back on today's incidents, Momo couldn't help but blush at how many times they had held hands. It was like they were an actual couple. It surprised her how that idea didn't seem to bother her all that much.
With that in mind, she began thinking about how things are going to end up once he takes her home. Would she go back to treating him as just a classmate? Or could they actually become more?
"Momo?" Toshiro called out to her, making her snap out of her thoughts.
"Huh?" She asked. "Did you say something?"
He nodded. "I asked if you were hungry."
Before she could reply, his question was quickly answered by the sudden grumbling of her stomach.
Laughing, he said. "I guess that answers my question."
Blushing from embarrassment, Momo kept her gaze down at her feet. "I guess it does, huh?"
"Don't worry about it." Toshiro said, giving her hand another squeeze. "I know the perfect place we can go to eat."
Smiling, she replied eagerly. "Okay. Let's go."
"Amazing!" Momo cheered after taking a bite of her burger. "This is so delicious!"
Toshiro couldn't help but chuckle at his date's peppiness as he watched from across the table. "You really like it?"
She only nodded her head because her mouth was too full to respond with words.
"I'm glad you do." He said. "And you said that this is your first time having a burger?"
After swallowing her food, Momo laughed sheepishly. "Yeah. I've heard about how good they are from my friend Rangiku, but I was always too busy to go with her to try one."
"I see. Well, I'm glad that I was able to buy you your first one."
"Thank you, Shiro." She said. "By the way, how did you know about this place?"
"Oh, well, after winning an important game, my team and I really wanted to go out and celebrate." He explained. "My best friend Kusaka suggested this place. He had heard that they having a special deal when students get a discount on certain days of the week. So we came here, and it turned out to be pretty fun."
Momo giggled. "Sounds like you all had a good time."
"We did." Toshiro said, smiling slightly. "It turned into a tradition. Whenever we win a soccer game, we would come here afterwards."
"This place must be really special to you then, huh?"
He nodded in reply.
"And you still brought me here?" She asked. "Are you sure that's okay?"
Toshiro couldn't help but laugh at that. "Yes, I'm sure. You mean a lot to me, Momo. So of course I wanted to bring you somewhere special."
She felt very touched at his declaration. Once again, he was able to make Momo's heart race.
However, there was still this nagging feeling in the back of her mind. Something that's been bothering her since he had first confessed his love for her. She decided that now was a good time to get the answer to her question.
"Can I ask you something?" Momo inquired.
"Sure. Ask me anything." Toshiro replied.
Momo gulped before asking. "Why me?"
"What?"
"Why do you have feelings for me, Toshiro? I mean, not to sound rude, but you haven't even spoken two words to me before Friday." She continued. "So how is it that you have such strong feelings for me?"
He remained quiet. Sighing, he looked down sadly. "You really don't remember?"
"Remember what?"
Toshiro looked back up at her before he began explaining. "It was at the beginning of the last semester, my very first day at school. I was walking down the hallway with my hands full of papers and books. Then some punk kids thought it would be funny to push me and knock everything out of my hands."
"That's horrible." She said, bringing a fist to her chest.
"I thought so too at first. Then something happened." He replied.
"What happened?"
Toshiro smiled as he stared at her fondly. "As I was gathering my things, this adorable brunette suddenly comes along and starts helping me. I couldn't believe it at first. As soon as I entered that school, I was targeted because my hair and eyes. Though, there in front of me, was someone who actually stopped and took the time to help me."
It was all slowly coming back to Momo. As he explained it to her, the memory was becoming more and more clear in her head.
Seeing her finally realizing what he was talking about, he continued on. "When I had everything gathered together again, I was stuck for words. I knew I should have said thank you, but when I finally saw the face of my helper, the breathe was knocked out of me. This girl was so beautiful and had the kindest eyes I had ever seen in my life. Though, what really caught my attention, was what she said to me."
"Don't worry. It'll get better." Momo finished for him.
"Yeah," He agreed. "Never before had I ever trusted someones words so much before. The caring way she had said it; it was like she was really looking out for me."
Momo blushed. "I was, actually. I just wanted you to know that even though you were new to our school, it didn't mean that you would be miserable."
Toshiro nodded before making the bold move of reaching across the table and grabbing her hand.
He stared longingly at their hands. "It was things like that, that made me notice you. After I found out that we were in the same class, it was like my attention was focused solely on you. I saw how you were so dedicated to your studies and how loyal you were to your friends. Especially how you always seemed to put others before yourself. It was everything about you. Before I knew it, I had fallen hard for you."
"Toshiro..."
"I truly believe that I can make you happy Momo, just as you've made me happy." He said while looking her straight in the eye. "That is, if you'll allow me the chance to."
Momo suddenly felt speechless. Throughout his entire story, she felt her pulse beating faster and faster with his every word. The warmth she was feeling in her chest seemed to only come when he looked at her in that loving way of his. This feeling of true happiness and confusion; he had been the only one ever to make her feel this way.
'Could it be...that I'm falling for him?' She thought bewildered.
Using her free hand, she put it over their entwined ones.
Toshiro looked up at her in shock. Though hope was slowly building up in his heart.
Smiling her most alluring smile, she spoke with a shaky voice. "Shiro, I think-"
She didn't get the chance to finish. From out of no where, she was interrupted with the sound of an alarm going off. It was so sudden that it made the two of them jump from shock.
The white haired teen reluctantly let go of her hands and reached into his pocket for his phone. He quickly dismissed the alarm before looking back her sadly.
"I'm sorry." He uttered quietly. "That was an alarm I put in case I lost track of time."
"For what?" Momo questioned, still shaken from before.
"To take you home. We've got an hour before your father expects you to be there."
"Oh, I see."
It was quiet between them for a few seconds. They both felt things stirring with them that were just waiting to be said, though neither of them could find the words or voice to say them.
Then, Toshiro finally spoke. "Momo?"
"Yes?" She answered quickly.
He hesitated. Toshiro could practically feel his emotions ready to burst from with him. However, in the end, he had lost his nerve.
Sighing, he looked away from her. "We should get going."
Momo couldn't stop the wave of disappointment that washed over her. Nodding solemnly, she whispered back a simple 'okay'.
The walk and bus rides home were spent in pure silence. Neither of the teens could even look at each other without the feeling of regret overtook them.
As they rode the bus heading to Momo's neighborhood, they both whacked their brains to try and find something, anything to say. But alas, they could not find the words.
Soon came the time to get off, and they both felt unprepared for what's to come next.
The walk was short and Momo's came into view as they turned the last corner. Once they were in front of it, they both came to a stop and awkwardly turned to each other. Again, they were met with pure silence.
"So," Toshiro said. "I guess I'll see you at school tomorrow."
She nodded. "I guess so."
He opened his mouth to say something more, but it quickly replaced with a simple sigh. Turning around he whispered out a short 'goodbye', then began walking away.
"Toshiro!" Momo suddenly called out, making his turn back to her. "I...I'm not ready yet."
"What?" He asked.
Taking a deep breathe, she willed herself to go on. "I'm not ready for this to end. This new experience that I've been having with you. These new things that you've somehow made me feel; I don't want them to go away."
"Momo..." Toshiro gasped out in shock.
She continued. "Even though it confused me at first, I'm sure now that this is what I want. I want to keep spending time with you and I want to keep getting to know you. I want to see you play soccer and to cheer you on. I want to watch the sunset with you and maybe even meet your grandmother one day. I want...I want..."
He watched her with anticipation. Desperately wanting her to go on, he spoke with a quivery voice. "You want what? Please tell me."
Momo clutched on to her dress as she shook with both excitement and fright. She closed her eyes tightly and took and deep gulp before letting it all out in one breathe.
"I want to keep falling for the idea of you and me!"
Toshiro's eyes widened in surprise. He had never felt his heart beat as fast as it did at that moment. He felt as though if it beat any faster, it could come close to having a heart attack. Though, that shock was swiftly overtaken by a wave of relief and happiness.
Grinning, he began taking slow and steady steps towards her.
Momo started to feel insanely nervous when she didn't hear him reply to her. She couldn't help but keep her eyes closed, fear making her stay motionless. She was about to call out to him, but then her eyes flew open when she felt herself being enclosed in a tight embrace.
"To-Toshiro?" She inquired, blinking in astonishment.
"Thank you Momo." He said joyfully. "I'll be sure to make you as happy as possible. I promise."
Tears of exhilaration quickly built up in her eyes. She didn't care though. She let them run free as she encircled her own arms around him. Burying her face in to his shoulder, she let out long and delighted sigh.
"I promise the same." She whispered against him.
The new found couple stayed like that for a good few minutes before Toshiro slowly pulled away. At first, she looked at him in confusion but his smile briskly reassured her.
Putting both hands on the nape of her neck, he gently began pulling her forward right as he started leaning closer to her. She knew right away what he was trying to do, and even though it startled her, she went along with it. Putting both hands on his shoulders, she closed her eyes in anticipation.
Though, before they could reach each other, the front door of her house slammed open. Revealing a very serious father and making the two teens jump away from each other.
"Daddy!" Momo turned to him and quickly put her hands at her sides. "Toshiro and I...we were just..um..."
Her father only held up a hand, signalling her to stop her stuttering then gestured for her to enter the house.
Nodding in understanding, she turned to Toshiro and gave him an embarrassed wave before quickly walking to the inside of her home.
Toshiro, who was still in shock from what happen, was caught off guard when the Hinamori father cleared his throat quite loudly.
"Well?" The man asked seriously. "Did she have a good time?"
"Um, I believe so, sir." He replied quickly.
"Good. I'm glad she did." Toshiro could have sworn he saw a slight smile on the other males face. "Now you better get home. It's getting late."
Without giving him a chance to reply, the older man quickly stepped back into his home and slammed the door back shut.
When he was out of sight, Toshiro let out a breathe he didn't realize her was holding. Taking one last look at her home, he turned and left Momo's home. A quite smile creeping up on his face as he did so.
Meet me on the schools roof before class starts tomorrow.
-Momo
Toshiro looked at the message on his phone for the umpteenth time as he sat at the said place. He had received it the night before, right when he arrived home.
It made him both excited and nervous. Possibilities of her telling him that she regretted yesterday or of her possibly finishing what they had started the night before ran through his mind. He wished desperately that the reason she called him there was the latter.
Suddenly, he heard the door leading to the roof open and close. Looking up from his phone, he gaze was met with the view of his love.
Quickly scrambling to his feet, he began walking over to Momo just as she walked towards him.
"Hi." She kindly greeted as they met in the middle.
Chuckling a bit, he answered. "Hey."
Momo looked down nervously at her fiddling fingers. "So, about yesterday..."
"You don't regret it, right?" Toshiro suddenly burst out.
She looked up at him in shock before her expression changed into an entertained one.
Momo giggled as she brought a fist up to her mouth. "Of course not, silly."
Toshiro sighed in relief. "Thank goodness."
She took one of his hands in both of hers and stared fondly at the sight. "What I was going to say, is that I'm sorry we were interrupted. There was one more thing I wanted to say to you."
"And what would that be?"
Looking him straight in the eye, she smiled. "Even though it was the most unexpected thing to happen to me, I've fallen in love with you, Toshiro."
A blush was quick to rise to his cheeks, but he was still able to manage a playful smile. "Is that a bad thing? That it was unexpected?"
"Not at all." She said, laughing.
Taking a step closer to her, Toshiro looked at her affectionately. "I love you too Momo."
Very happy with his answer, Momo couldn't wait anymore. Putting both hands on his shoulders, she smiled before leaning in, closing her eyes, and finally giving him her very first kiss.
It only took him a moment to recover from his stagger, then he placed both hands on her waist and began kissing her back.
They continued to kiss until they both needed to pull back for air. Gazing into each others eyes for a few seconds, they both let out small bouts of laughter before lovely placing their foreheads together.
Then they heard the school bell ring, signalling that it was almost time for class to start.
"Come on." Momo said, pulling away but still holding on to his hand. "We don't want to be late."
Toshiro nodded in agreement then followed his new girlfriend to the door of the roof.
Both of them red in the cheeks and grinning brightly.
