Chapter 365
.
On Sunday evening major Keeler told Eve some much needed good news. President Mason had reached a very temporary truce with Walker. They would have a televised debate. Specifically the two of them would be debating via split-screen. People would see the debate live, even though Mason and Walker wouldn't be in the same room. Best case scenario, further bloodshed could be avoided. If that failed, both leaders were trying to persuade, through debate, people from the other side not to fight. Either way, this debate was happenning Wednesday night. But there was a risk. Technicians would have to go into the crowd to bring Walker's people the equipment, make their technology compatible. These technicians would need guards, and Eve suddenly realized where Eve was going with this.
Monday June 23rd. This morning, Eve was sent over the wall with two technicians, and young Kyle Singer. The truce was suppossedly in everyone's best interests. Walker and Mason each believed they were in the right, that they could bring others to their side. But with only 27 days until impact, and the scorching heat, nerves were on edge everywhere. Eve and Kyle were suppossed to protect the technicians. Eve figured she'd probably protect Kyle, if it came to that. She had come to think of death as a release from the pain, but her maternal instincts were always present. Yet she was taking this kid into a very dangerous situation. Kyle said he wasn't scared, Eve mde him brave. This made her feel even worse. Still, Eve escorted Kyle and the two technicians into the danger zone.
As Mason's technicians worked Eve took the opportunity to study the crowd. They didn't look like much of a threat individually. Many had small hand-guns, but Eve's side had assault weapons. But one advantage this crwd had was very large numbers. They likely outnumbered people in the capitol by ten to one. Walker called his people "Knights" "Crusaders" "Warriors." Most were starving, desperate refugees. Many would be killed if they breached the wall. But eventually, they might actually burn Washington D.C. And Eve's unit was on the front lines, they'd be the first to die. During the truce Mason allowed some food brought from Wahington, and other places, given to this crowd. It wasn't much, but it would get most of them through the day. And hopefully, it would be enough to placate the mob.
