'So what's Ed like as a manager? Is he strict?'
I looked over at Sky and watched the corners of her mouth twitch, playfully.
'Oh, completely. He made me lie on a glassfloor up the top of the CN tower in Toronto and I had to lie there until I accepted his offer of joining his record label!'
The interviewers laughed and looked at me. 'Too cruel!'
'Well I had to make sure she joined.' I replied with a smile.
Twenty minutes later, the questions had been answered and I felt glad to have chosen Cosmopolitan. They hadn't tried to make Sky uncomfortable, nor had they asked anything too personal. They had been ideal for her first ever interview.
'Okay Sky,' The brunette, Clara, said, 'We'll take you down to hair and make-up and whilst we do that, do you mind answering a few questions, Ed?'
'Sure.' I nodded.
A young girl appeared in the doorway with a sleek, black bob. She smiled at me and then looked over at Sky. 'I'll take you down to hair and make-up.'
'Okay.' Sky smiled and stood up, leaving the room.
I sipped at the cup of tea the receptionist had brought in for me, glad it was no longer piping hot.
Clara changed dictaphones and sat up in her seat after pressing record. 'We thought we'd ask you some questions whilst you're here because our readers have voted you 'Musician of the year.''
'Wow, that's great.' I replied, feeling surprised. 'Thanks to everyone who voted.'
'And now you've signed your first act to your record label. How does that feel?'
'Incredible. Sky is so talented and I can't wait for you all to hear her first album. I know it will be fantastic.'
'What do you think of all these people saying on Social Media that they 'ship Sed'?'
I paused for a second and then worked out what they meant. Sky plus Ed = Sed. Ah. I had thought about it. More than I probably should have.
I faked a laugh. 'Well I'm sorry to disappoint everyone, but Sky and I are just friends. She's an incredible, talented, beautiful girl but she's like a sister to me.' Saying it made my stomach flip and not in a good way.
'What are your next steps as a musician, Ed?'
'I've been writing some new songs and there's a few singles from my X album that I'd like to release. Plus I've got my US tour at the end of August, too.'
'A busy few months then?'
'Absolutely, but it's all worth it. I love my job and all of the fans who support me.'
The interview was shorter than Sky's, as it wasn't a main piece. They were also interviewing 'hottest male' and 'best actor' too, as voted for by their readers.
'Thank you for that, Ed.' Clara said, shaking my hand.
'No problem.' I smiled.
'Shall we see how Sky is getting on?'
I sat in the studio waiting for Sky, as her outfits for the shoot were being chosen. I quickly checked my phone for messages, replied to a few and then slipped my phone back into my pocket. When I looked up, Sky was walking into the room. In a white crop top with blue flowers and a matching skirt, she looked incredible. I couldn't help but smile though when I realised she was finding it hard to walk in the blue heels she had been given. She spotted me and gave me a wave, before putting her concentration back into walking over to the photographer, who was adjusting the lighting.
xx-xx-xx
Sky.
I felt a little exposed with midriff showing for my first ever photoshoot. And I knew I had another photoshoot later, this time for the single cover for 'Everything has changed'. I was going to be all photo-ed out by the end of the day. The photographer directed me throughout the hour long shoot. In some photographs, you should only see my waist-up. Others were more posed, with my hand in my hair or on my hip. At least it was tasteful. Ed sat by the laptop, nodding in agreement with the photographs that were being selected for the magazine spread.
'That's a wrap.' The photographer called. 'We've got what we need.'
I slipped off the gorgeous, but uncomfortable heels, and walked over to the laptop, having a nose at the photographs they had taken. Was that really me? I looked older somehow, but not in a bad way. In fact, I actually looked almost pretty.
'They're good, huh?' Ed smiled as I sat down beside him.
'Yeah.' I replied, unsure of what else to say.
'Gave up on the shoes?'
I nodded. 'My feet are killing me. I don't think I've ever worn heels that high before. At least they looked good.'
'Shall we go and grab some lunch? We're not needed for the other shoot until three.'
I decided it was best to change back into my sundress for lunch, even though I had been told I could keep the outfit and the shoes (which I was planning on donating to Jenni). My feet almost groaned in agreement as I slipped on my flip-flops. Ed took me to lunch at Brix, a restaurant and bar which always looked lovely but too expensive for a college student. Our table was in the courtyard outside, which was surrounded by vine and flower-covered walls. It was fairly quiet, but then it was a Monday lunchtime. There were a few people who looked at us with recognition, before continuing with their possible business meetings.
'We could have just gone to Subway or that cute little diner in town.' I said as the waitor poured me a glass of freshly-made still lemonade.
'I know, but sometimes it's nice to go somewhere different.' Ed shrugged. 'Besides, we'll be out in the public eye later. It's a break before that.'
'Where exactly are we going later?' He hadn't yet told me where our photoshoot was going to be and I was curious.
The corners of his mouth twitched. 'I can't tell you that.'
I stuck my tongue out at him, childishly. 'Spoilsport.'
'You'll like it. I'm sure of it.'
'Hmmm.'
'So how was your first photoshoot?' He asked, changing the subject.
'It was okay.' I shrugged. 'Felt a bit weird posing for a camera.'
'I know the feeling.' He smiled. 'Sometimes I think that the more natural photoshoots are better.'
'They probably are.' I nodded in agreeement.
My salmon and Ed's beef arrived, being placed on our table. We thanked the waitor and he walked off.
'How are the wedding plans going?'
'Good.' I replied. 'I'm just waiting now to see what's been planned for my bachelorette party at the end of the month.'
'Hen party.' He corrected with a grin.
'I know, but I've been living over here too long now.'
After lunch, we headed to our next photoshoot venue and I was surprised when we parked outside a fairground. I looked over at Ed and he shot back a grin.
'Sky!'
I looked over at Nina and Marty, who were hurrying towards me. 'Hi guys!' They wrapped their arms tightly around me, smothering me in a hug. 'Can't... breathe.'
'Sorry, superstar.' Marty apologised.
'How are you?' Nina asked, linking arms with me and guiding me to the fairground entrance.
The outfits in my make-shift dressing room, which was a trailer, were a lot more 'me' than the designer get-up at Cosmopolitan. A-line skirts, 50s dresses. They were gorgeous.
'I was thinking of this one.' Nina said, holding up a a white lace bustier top and a layered, net, baby blue skirt.
'It's like a retro princess outfit.'
'Exactly.' She smiled. 'Now, quick, get changed. We've only got this place for two hours and then the public are in.'
I looked in the mirror at my second make-over of the day, definitely preferring this one. My tulle skirt fell just above my knees and my lace bustier halterneck was very flattering and feminine. My hair hung in its signature loose, blonde curls and my make-up was very simple. The subtle smokey make-up brought out my eyes and I noticed how the foundation hid any blemishes. I took note to ask Nina what brand it was as it worked miracles. I slipped my feet into the comfy white lace pumps they had picked out and headed out of the trailer.
There was something spooky about an empty fairground. All of the food and drink places were closed, and there were only six of us there, other than a few members of staff; myself, Ed, Nina, Marty and the two photographers. Ed had been right about natural photoshoots. They were so much better. We went on the ferris wheel, carousel and ate candyfloss, whilst the photographers snapped away. He looked smart in his white shirt with rolled-up sleeves, waistcoat, black jeans and black vans.
'Having fun?' Ed asked with a smile.
'Absolutely.' I replied with a grin. 'This place is awesome, I can't believe I didn't know it was here. My friends would love it.'
'Yeah?' He shuffled, awkwardly.
'SKY!'
I looked up and saw Jenni running towards me and I squinted when I saw that Phee was in tow.
'Oh my god!' I squealed, running to embrace them. 'What are you doing here?!'
'Ed invited us.' Jenni smiled. 'You look so awesome!'
'And what are you doing here?' I asked, looking at Phee.
'Do I need a reason to visit my best friend?'
Rob, Zed and Yves walked around the corner and gave me a wave.
I turned back to Ed, a huge smile on my face. 'Thank you.'
'You're welcome.' He returned the smile. 'Now come on, we've got about half an hour before the public come in and the queues start. Better make the most of it.'
Despite the fact that the photoshoot was over, the photographers still snapped photos of me with my friends, when they weren't joining us on the rides. Nina and Marty were getting on great with Phee and Jenni, and Ed was hanging out with the guys.
'So how is it being a celebrity?' Phee asked as we climbed into the teacups ride.
'Weird.' I replied. 'When you see yourself on the internet and on the television. And it's weird how many people suddenly want to be back in touch with you.'
'Yeah, that's the only reason I'm here.' She winked.
'How's my favourite baby girl?'
'She's growing so fast, it's scary. She's actually with Sally and Simon this evening.'
'They probably like having a baby around.' I smiled.
The queue for the tea cups started to fill up as our cups spun around. We looked over at the boys, who were spinning theirs as fast as they could.
'Rob just had a hot dog.' Jenni frowned. 'I'm pretty sure it'll come back up in a minute.'
We finished on the spinning tea cups and walked over towards the ferris wheel.
'Oh my god, it's Ed Sheeran and Sky Bright!' A chorus of high-pitched screams squealed.
Jenni and Phee both laughed as a group of pre-teen girls walked over to us, camera phones in hands.
'Please can we have your autographs and photos?' A girl with big green eyes asked, flattening down her hair.
We posed together and seperately for a bunch of photos and then made a break for the ferris wheel in time for the sunset.
'So that was weird.' Zed laughed as he sat beside me and pulled the lap bar down.
'Just a little.' I replied, shaking my head in disbelief as the wheel slowly started to move. I rested my head on Zed's shoulder and he put his arm around me in response.
'Tired?'
'Yeah.' I yawned. 'It's been a busy day.'
'It sure has.' He kissed my forehead. 'And you've got that TV show tomorrow evening.'
'I have.' I sighed. 'Will you still come?'
'Of course. I'd have been there today if you'd asked.'
'Bet you were busy though.'
'Yeah, it's getting busier and busier now with the summer holidays. I did book off three days though for my bachelor party earlier.'
'Oh?'
'Not that I know where we are going. Yves just told me that I'd need to get a few days off work. I invited Ed along, I hope that's okay.'
'Of course.' I smiled. 'He could hardly come to mine. I have included Marty in it though. Can we get away with gay guys?'
'I don't see why not.'
We reached the top and I looked up at the fairground as the lights started to come on in front of us. The sky glowed a mixture of pink and orange and the sun was starting to disappear behind a mountain. It was a beautiful sunset. Probably one of the most beautiful sunsets I had ever seen. Zed took my head gently in his hands and kissed me softly, on top of the world.
I slept in the next day and I was disappointed when I rolled over to find I was alone. I had contemplated ringing Jenni or Phee for company, but then I remembered they were planning my bachelorette. I showered and dressed in some denim shorts and a plain black vest, and I found myself picking up my songbook and flicking through. At some point I was going to have to choose some songs to put onto an album. Some of the songs I hadn't played in months, and I knew that I had probably forgotten how to play them. I sat at my keyboard (we didn't have enough space in the apartment for a piano) and started to play. I loved feeling my hands run over the keys and the sound the keys made in response.
'This road is anything but simple
Twisted like a riddle
I've seen high and I've seen low
So loud, the voices of all my doubts
Telling me to give up
To pack up and leave town
But even so I had to believe
Impossible means nothing to me
So can you lift me up?
And turn the ashes into flames
'Cause I have overcome more than words will ever say
And I've been given hope
That there's a light on up the hall
And that a day will come when the fight is won
And I think that day has just begun. '
I stopped playing due to the sound of my mobile ringing. I reached over and grabbed it, cursing as I knocked over my glass of water.
'Hello?'
'Hey Sky, it's Phee.'
'Hey. I thought you were doing secret agent stuff.'
'Already done.' I could tell she was grinning from the tone of her voice. 'Fancy a trip to the beach?'
I looked at the time. 12pm. I had loads of time. Then I looked outside and the blue sky. 'Sure. Shall I pick you up? I'll be there in fifteen.'
The beach was pretty quiet, but then I assumed that was because it was still a weekday. We found a nice spot to lay our towels down and Phee put up a parasole for my beautiful little goddaughter to lie under. I stripped into my bikini and lay down beside Phee, Jenni on the other side of her.
'Do you miss having a normal job?' Jenni asked, turning to lie on her front.
'Like in Hollister? Not really.' I replied, flicking my hair over my shoulder.
'I can't wait to go back to work.' Phee sighed. 'Don't get me wrong, I love my daughter, but I like keeping busy and getting out of the house. It's either raining or too hot in the city right now and it's not like we've got a local beach to cool off at.'
'So,' I changed the subject, 'where are we going for my bachelorette party?'
'Nice try.' Jenni shook her head. 'But all I will tell you is that you need to be packed by ten AM on Friday 21st July.'
'We're going away in two weeks?'
'Yes, but that's all I'm saying for now.'
'Hmph.' I pouted. 'What about your little one?'
'The bachelor party is next week so Yves will be around to take over.' Phee explained.
My phone buzzed so I opened the new message from Ed.
Lovely day! Hope you're making the most of it! x
I smiled and sent a response.
Of course! Chilling on the beach before 'work' later x
Great! See you at six for dress rehearsal x
'So, your big live television debut tonight.' Phee smiled as she watched her sleeping baby.
'I know.' I replied, taking a deep breath.
'You'll be great.'
'I sure hope so.'
When I arrived at the studio, Marty and Nina were waiting for me with an outfit and their vanity cases of make-up and hair products. Ed was already set to go, so he was sat chatting to Zed in his dressing room.
My outfit for the evening was simple but gorgeous; a black chiffon skirt and a white lace crop, with small white wedges. My hair hung in its blonde curls with a braid pinned back on each side of my head. My make-up was the same as it had been for the photoshoot the previous day.
Nina added a statement flower necklace and stood back to admire her work. 'Perfect.'
There was a knock on the door and a woman dressed in black, wearing a headset, appeared. 'Are you ready for a quick soundcheck with Ed?'
'Sure.' I replied, standing up. I followed her out of the dressing room, finding it weird that it said 'Sky Bright' on my door.
She led me down the corridor, which was decorated with pictures of guests who had been on the show previously. 'Okay, this in the greenroom where you'll wait to be announced.' She said when we reached a small room with black leather couches, a mini-bar and television screens which showed the currently empty set. She pointed to a large, white door. 'And this is where you'll go to get onto the set when your name is called.' She led me out of the door and onto the steps onto the set, which consisted of an open-plan sofa area and performance stage. Since Steve and Chris had turned more into a talkshow than lifestyle show, they had jazzed up their set.
Ed waved at me from on the stage and I was led over to meet him. 'You look lovely.' He smiled.
'Not too bad yourself.'
'Okay guys, we just want to run through the whole of the song before we bring in the audience in ten minutes. We're a little behind schedule so we're hoping to get this done quickly.' The stage manager explained.
'No problem.' Ed nodded. He picked up his guitar and counted us in.
'That was excellent!' The stage manager and crew, who were busy cleaning the set and adjusting the lighting, applauded when we were finished. I spotted Zed at the side of the stage and I ran over to embrace him, kissing him softly on the lips.
xx-xx-xx
Ed.
I let out a sigh as I watched Sky embracing Zed. Next to him she looked so small and fragile. She was. And I knew that if he ever did anything to hurt her then I would probably hunt him down. She kissed him and I walked away, ready to wait in the green room.
We weren't called on until the final quarter of the show. Sky was shaking and I knew that she probably wanted Zed in with us, but he hadn't been allowed. He had been told he could sit in the audience.
I moved to sit beside her and gave her a glass of water. 'We're on after this break. Are you going to be okay?'
She nodded, mutely. I hesitated and then wrapped an arm around her shoulders, rubbing the top of the arm furthest from me gently. She let out a deep breath and I felt her relax. I sucked in a breath, smelling the perfume I was so used to smelling now.
'Welcome back, folks.' Chris said as the ad break finished. I helped Sky up to her feet and we walked over to the door. 'Our final guests for tonight have been over every newspaper and magazine in the country recently and they're not even Canadian! Ladies and gentleman, Ed Sheeran and Sky Bright.'
I gave her my arm and we walked through the door together. We seperated and waved at the audience before I led her to the sofa, my hand guiding the small of her back. Chris and Steven kissed Sky's cheek and shook my hand before we sat down.
'Welcome to the show.' Steven smiled.
'Thanks, it's great to be here.' I replied with my rehearsed, interview tone.
'And welcome Sky. Your first television appearance.' Chris smiled and the audience cheered and applauded.
xx-xx-xx
Sky.
'Absolutely. If I look back on my life a month ago, I would never have seen this coming.' I replied. Cue laughter.
'I'll bet.' Chris nodded.
'So Ed, tell us how you came across Sky's talent.' Steven said, turning to my musical companion.
'Well I quite often flick through Youtube when I'm free, it's how I find out about a lot of new music. I've been in Vancouver a lot lately as I played a college ball over here, so I thought I'd check out music around here and then I came across Sky's video. I thought she was incredibly talented and turns out I was right.' Ed smiled and the audience laughed again.
'Let's just take a look at that video.'
I wanted to sink into my seat and disappear. I hadn't watched the video yet myself, but there I was, singing 'Love me like you do' at the open mic bar. All I found myself thinking in the twenty second clip they played was 'wow Jenni's phone is very good at recording.' The audience applauded again and this time the attention turned back to me.
'Incredible!' Chris beamed. 'What were you doing when you heard about Ed's comment, Sky?'
'I was on the beach with my best friend.' I replied with a smile. 'I didn't even know that she'd uploaded a video and then she said she had and read Ed's comment. I didn't know what to do. I've always been a nervous performer.' I admitted.
'But there was no need to be! Now you're signed to a grammy-winner's record label.'
'I know, it's incredible and I'm so thankful to Ed and everything he has done.'
Ed smiled beside me. 'You deserve all of it.'
'When will we be able to buy your album?' Chris asked me.
'Not for a while yet, I'm afraid, but Ed and I are releasing our single 'Everything has changed' two weeks today so you'll all be able to buy it.' I smiled.
'And we definitely will! Ladies and gentleman, do you think they should perform it for us now?'
The audience cheered and applauded in agreement.
'I think that's a yes!' Steven said. We stood up and made our way over to the stage. Ed slipped his guitar strap over his shoulder and I took the microphone out of the stand. 'Ladies and gentleman, performing live from Vancouver, Ed Sheeran and Sky Bright with their new single 'Everything has changed'.'
I took a deep breath and realised that the more I sang, the easier it got.
