My time away with the girls was incredible. We spent the last few days relaxing in the spa, pampering, topping up our tan and we even hit the shops. It was nice getting to know Taylor too and she gave me some good advice for song-writing. She had tagged me in photos on Instagram and everyone was saying we were clearly new BFFs. Before I knew it, it was the day of the wedding. Which was terrifying.
I was travelling over to Vancouver Island with Sally, Simon, Jenni and our car full of our outfits, extra clothing, decor and flowers. Zed was travelling up with his family in a hired minibus. The rest of the guests were making their own way there, arriving at some point on the Friday. We were first to arrive and we were greeted by a very excited Rosa at check-in.
'I've been watching you on the television!' She cooed. 'And you're in Cosmopolitan this month!' She held up the magazine and I took it from her. I'd forgotten it was release day, in amongst the wedding plans. I looked through the pages and found my interview. 'You're welcome to take it.' She smiled. 'We've got a few copies in the spa.'
'Thank you.' I said with a smile.
'Shall I show you where the bridal party are staying tonight?'
She showed us to a villa next to the lake, with a decking over the lake. There were two bedrooms in it, a living room/kitchen area and a large bathroom. On the kitchen counter was a hamper basket with wine and yummy treats in it.
'Parents of the bride, I'll take you to your villa next door.' Rosa smiled, leaving Jenni and I to it.
'I can see why you chose this place. ' Jenni sighed, looking around. She picked up the dress bags containing her bridesmaid dress and Phee's and hung them in the closet in the double bedroom. 'It's incredible. Everywhere has a beautiful view.'
'I know.' I smiled, looking outside at the blue sky over the mountains. 'It really is beautiful.'
I put down my bags and walked out onto the decking, sitting myself on the wooden chair with Cosmopolitan magazine in my hand.
Jenni came out and sat down beside me with a book. 'Are you going to read your interview?'
'Yeah.' I replied with a smile. I flicked to the right page and couldn't believe how great the photographs looked. Did I really look like that? I almost looked like I belonged in Cosmopolitan.
'You look incredible.' My friend smiled, proudly, from beside me. She looked over my shoulder and scanned through the page. 'It's a good interview. I didn't know Ed called you bluebird.'
'When he feels like it.' I laughed.
'Eyes and cuteness I guess.' She winked.
Zed took me for a walk when the minibus had arrived and he had settled into his villa with his groomsmen. I wrapped my arms around his waist, holding him like I hadn't seen him in ages. He reached down and kissed the top of my forehead as we stopped along the makeshift bay.
'I can't believe we're getting married tomorrow.' He smiled, wrapping his arms tighter around my waist.
'You've not changed your mind have you?'
'Of course not.' He replied. 'I can't wait to call you my wife.'
'Really?'
'Really, soon to be Mrs Benedict.' He took my head in his hands and kissed me softly, showing me that he really meant it.
'Sky!' Phee squealed, pulling me into a hug. 'I can't believe you're getting married tomorrow!'
'I know!' I beamed.
'Hey, Sky.' Taylor pulled me into a hug. She was going to take the extra bed in the bridal suite that night, seeing as she got on so well with Jenni and Phee at the bachelorette party.
'What have you girls been up to?' I asked, sitting down on the sofa.
'Well we read through your interview.' Phee smiled. 'How exciting!'
'I completely forgot it came out today.'
'Did you record your cover of the week yet?' Jenni asked, sitting down beside me.
'Oh crap, I knew I'd forgotten to do something. It's meant to be up today.'
Taylor nodded over the guitar in the corner. 'I've got an idea.'
'Hi everyone, Sky here with my newest cover.' I said into the video camera an hour and a half later. 'As you can see, I've got a few special guests today. Here's Taylor, Phoenix and Jenni.' My friends all gave a small wave and Taylor adjusted the guitar across her lap. 'Today I'm covering Meghan Trainor's Dear Future Husband. I hope you like it.'
Taylor started playing the notes on the guitar and I started to sing.
'Dear future husband,
Here's a few things
You'll need to know if you wanna be
My one and only all my life
Take me on a date
I deserve it, babe
And don't forget the flowers every anniversary
'Cause if you'll treat me right
I'll be the perfect wife
Buying groceries
Buy-buying what you need
You got that 9 to 5
But, baby, so do I
So don't be thinking I'll be home and baking apple pies
I never learned to cook
But I can write a hook
Sing along with me
Sing-sing along with me
You gotta know how to treat me like a lady
Even when I'm acting crazy
Tell me everything's alright.'
The girls joined in for the chorus, singing the harmonies I'd quickly tried to teach them.
'Dear future husband,
Here's a few things you'll need to know if you wanna be
My one and only all my life
Dear future husband,
If you wanna get that special lovin'
Tell me I'm beautiful each and every night.'
At six, we all headed to the barn loft for a wedding rehearsal. The afternoon had been relaxed and most of the guests had arrived, although I hadn't seen Ed yet. The girls and I had changed and done our hair and make-up. I was wearing a white, lace knee-length dress, brown boots and a denim shirt. My hair was in loose curls with a braid either side of my head. Taylor was wearing a blue tea dress, Jenni a red maxi dress and Phee a black maxi dress. The barn loft hadn't yet been decorated, but the chairs had been laid out. Most of the guests were meeting us at the barbecue, so the loft was empty. I rehearsed walking up the aisle with my bridesmaids and we rehearsed the songs together. Zed looked handsome in his black shirt with rolled up sleeves and his black jeans, although I knew what I was really looking forward to was seeing him in his suit the next day.
After a run-through, we went down to the beach to join our guests for the barbecue. I was pleased that the sun was still shining brightly, I just hoped it would continue into the next day.
'Bluebird!'
I looked up to see Ed walking towards me in jeans and a signature plaid shirt. 'Hey, you made it.'
'I'm sorry I'm so late.' He replied. 'My flight was delayed.'
'It's okay, you're here now.' I smiled, giving him a friendly hug.
'You look lovely as always. Did you see Cosmo?'
I nodded. 'I can't believe it's me in those pictures.'
'They're great. You look like a superstar.'
'I felt like one.'
'I saw your cover on the way here. Nice song choice.' He said with a smile, although he looked like something was bothering him.
'Ha, yeah, it was Taylor's idea.'
'Teddy!' Taylor squealed, rushing over and pulling him into a hug. 'You're so late.'
'I know.'
I left them to it, walking back over to join the rest of the guests.
'Sky, I'm so proud of you.' Sally said, joining me by the dock.
'Thank you.' I smiled at her.
'You've gone through so much and yet you're still such an incredible girl. And now you're signed to a record deal. I can't think of anyone more deserving.' She pulled me into an embrace and I bit back the tears brimming in my eyes. It was going to be an emotional weekend. 'I'm so glad we met.'
'I love you, mom.' I smiled, looking up at her.
'And I love you too.' She kissed the top of my head with affection.
'Can I steal my bride for a moment?' Zed asked, appearing at my side.
'Of course.'
Zed wrapped his arm around my waist and led me to the dock. 'I just want to tell you I love you.'
'You always tell me that.' I replied with a smile.
And then the firework exploded overhead. Zed bent down and kissed me softly.
The next morning, I woke up earlier than I expected. 6am. I tossed and turned in bed, but I just couldn't seem to get back to sleep. Was it nerves or excitement? I wasn't sure. I pulled on my jeans, a white tank top and an oversized blue jumper. I walked into the living room, where Taylor's guitar sat propped against the couch. She had told me I could use it whilst I was learning to play, if I wanted. I put the strap over my shoulder and walked out of the villa.
The air was cooler than the previous day, but the sun was already out, revealing a blue sky. The forest was completely quiet, apart from the chatter of birds and the gentle lapping of the lake water against the rocks. I found myself walking to a small dock not too far from the villa, but far enough not to wake anyone up. I sat down on the dock, placing the guitar beside me, and looked out at the mountains.
'Before I fall, too fast
Kiss me quick, but make it last
So I can see how badly this will hurt me
When you say goodbye.'
I paused and looked at the guitar beside me. I carefully picked it up and placed it onto my lap. I'd learnt a few notes, but not much. I placed my fingers in the correct place and played a C note. Then I tried to play a B. I flinched at the sound of it. I tried again, but I couldn't get the position of my fingers quite right. I sighed in frustration.
'Need some help?'
I jumped at the voice and turned to face the sound. Ed was stood there with a sheepish grin, in a t-shirt and tracksuit bottoms.
'You're up early.' I commented as he sat down beside me.
'I was going to say the same to you.'
'I couldn't get back to sleep.' I replied.
'Your fingers are in the wrong place for a B.'
'I know, I can't remember where to put them.' I sighed, feeling frustrated.
'Here.' He moved to sit behind me, lining my hands up in the correct place. He gently moved my fingers to the correct place on the fretboard.
xx-xx-xx
Ed.
As I sat behind her, her back against my chest, I held my breath. I didn't want to feel like this. I wanted to be her friend. Maybe her best friend. Maybe more, but I knew it couldn't happen. She loved Zed and he really loved her. I had hardly slept. I'd contemplated turning up to the wedding at all, but I knew she wanted me there
Sky strummed on the guitar, playing a perfect b-note and cutting into my thoughts.
'That's better.' I whispered from behind her.
'Can you please help me with the others?'
'Of course.'
I showed her the other notes and then moved back beside her, giving my heart a break. My breath slowed. 'I heard you singing.' I said.
'Oh.. it's not finished.'
'Can I hear it?' I turned to look her face and she bit her lip, nervously. 'Please?'
'Okay.' She took in a deep breath and started to sing acapella.
'Before I fall, too fast
Kiss me quick but make it last
So I can see how badly it will hurt me
When you say goodbye
Keep it sweet, keep it slow
Let the future pass, but don't let go
But tonight I could fall too soon under this beautiful moonlight
But you're so hypnotizing
You've got me laughing while I sing
You've got me smiling in my sleep
And I can see this unraveling
Your love is where I'm falling
But please don't catch me.'
xx-xx-xx
Sky.
'See this heart won't settle down
Like a child running scared from a clown
I'm terrified of what you do
My stomach screams just when I look at you
Run far away so I can breathe
Even though you're far from suffocating me
I can't set my hopes too high
'Cause every "Hello" ends with a "Goodbye"
But you're so hypnotizing
You've got me laughing while I sing
You've got me smiling in my sleep
And I can see this unraveling
Your love is where I'm falling
But please don't catch me'
I looked over at Ed, who had a small smile playing on his lips. 'Well?'
'It's great.' He said, reassuringly. 'Now let's work on playing that on guitar.'
I headed back to the villa around nine, knowing my alarm was going to go off. Ed walked me back, carrying Taylor's guitar over his shoulder. I reached for the handle, but he stopped me.
'Hey, there's something I wanted to give you.'
'Oh?'
He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, blue box. He took my hand and placed it in it before I could refuse. 'Open it.'
I carefully opened the box. Inside was a dainty, silver chain and at the end of the chain was a tiny blue bird. I smiled. 'Thank you, it's lovely.'
'You're welcome. It's a little... wedding gift.' He put his hands in his pockets. 'You know... something new, something blue...'
'I'll wear it today.' I smiled. I kissed him gently on the cheek. 'See you later?'
'See you later.'
I opened the door and crept inside, only to come face-to-face with Jenni, who was in his pyjamas.
'And where do you think you've been?' She frowned, her arms folded.
'I couldn't sleep.' I replied, putting down Taylor's guitar and the jewellery box.
'I was worried you'd done a runnaway bride.' Jenni sighed. 'And breakfast was just delivered. And you're not in your special robe. I even had your name put on it.'
'Jen, breathe, I'm here.' I laughed. 'And I'll put the robe on.'
'Good, because in an hour we've got facials and we don't want to get behind schedule.'
Taylor and Phee were soon woken up by Jenni and after breakfast, we took turns to have showers and put on our personalised robes (thanks to Jenni). Sally also came to join us, and Simon was off kayaking. Around lunchtime, Nina and Marty showed up. We all enjoyed some mini sandwiches and mini cakes, which Rosa had kindly provided. Then they did my hair and make-up and I was almost ready.
At half-past two, I was stood in front of the full-length mirror in the bedroom I had shared with Jenni. I was wearing my perfect dress; mermaid fit, lace around the sweet-heart neckline, a scoop back, a lace bodice and lace cascading to the ground. My make-up was natural but flattering, bringing out my eyes. My blonde hair was pinned into a half-updo so that it still cascaded down my shoulders and my veil was tucked into my pinned hair at the back, so that it started half-way down my head. I had fastened my necklace from Ed around my neck and I was wearing the almost-diamond earrings Sally and Simon had bought me for Christmas.
'Sky, are you nearly ready?' Sally called, knocking on the door.
I took a deep breath. Was I ready? To get married? To grow up? To start a new life? To be a wife? I was ready to be Zed's wife. Zed's soulfinder. 'Yes.'
I opened the door and my bridesmaids (Jenni and Phee) stood with Simon and Sally, their mouths wide open. Jenni and Phee looked beautiful with their hair pinned in a loose curly updo, in their baby blue sweetheart neckline bridesmaid dresses.
'Oh, Sky!' Sally cried out.
'You look so beautiful.' Simon said, his eyes watery. Jenni and Phee stood, speechlessly. And then Luna cried out, so Phee had to pick her up. She looked adorable in a little pale, blue flower girl dress. The photographer snapped photos of us, quietly, not ruining the moment.
'Are you ready to get married?' Jenni asked with a big grin. 'I can't wait to see Zed's face when you walk up the aisle.'
'I'm definitely ready.'
