Chapter 379
.
Last night these two groups had celebrated their peace, this morning they were waging war on another group. This shouldn't be too suprising given the times. There were only nine days until impact, they didn't have time to hold grudges. Some said George Mason didn't know when to quit negotiations, but this seemed to be working. Eve and Benson were each in charge of ten other soldiers on this operation. The Moloch worshipers had taken over the national cathedral, perhaps a way to challenge the monotheistic God who'd abandoned them. They were planning to sacrifice several infants to Moloch today, unless these soldiers could stop them. Around sunrise Eve scouted the area covertly. There were about 50 Molochites, including children. They were still building the oven for the ritual, so the ten infants were still alive. There were at least 3 pregnant Molochites, they seemed ready to cut those children out for their ritual. They were all covered in mud and scars, perhaps hiding out of shame. One good thing for Eve's group was they all had assault weapons, the Molochites only had machetes. Benson's plan was to surround them, force them to surrender. In truth Eve could understand wanting to murder your own children before impact, perhaps even sacrifice it you thought you could protect yourself and your other family. What she couldn't understand was why they needed to use fire. Why make their deaths as painful as possible. They were likely insane, not rational enough to surrender. But a full scale battle could put the kids, the infants in more danger. It might be futile, especially when the countdown wasn't even in double digits anymore. But for these children, Eve was willing to give it a try.
