James laid on his back in his room and stared at the ceiling. Ever since he finished his talk with his parent's, he'd been constantly thinking about what he should do and how it would affect, not just his life, but the lives of everyone he cared for.
Part of him wanted to become the first in the next generation of Avengers. Be just like his father. He always heard how everyone believed he would be just like his dad and how it was highly possible that he inherited the super soldier serum since it had become part of his father's DNA.
It caused many to believe that he would become a great soldier. Like his father.
Throughout his young life, James had wanted to be just like his father. His father had automatic respect from people, whether he knew them or not, outstanding and natural leadership, an absolute genius in strategy, showing that he was a man when everyone began to believe he was more.
James admired his father greatly and that made his decision difficult.
The other part of him didn't want to cause worry to his parent's if he chose to accept Fury's offer.
As the only child of Steve Rogers and Natasha Romanoff, James knew very well that if he became the leader of the next generation of heroes, there would be many enemies out to get him.
It nearly happened once before but his parent's had been able to prevent it. Since then, they had been even more protective of him.
The almost kidnapping happened when he had been twelve. For nearly two years, his parent's had kept James at a safe house that his father and his team had used during the second world war.
The house had been so well hidden that he believed even SHIELD didn't know it's location.
Just before his fourteenth birthday, his parent's figured that it would be alright to let him come back to society. Even then, they had him wear a special wrist band that had a tracker and communicator.
He still wore it to this day because he didn't want the situation to happen again. He didn't want his parent's to forever live in grief because something happened to him. He remembered seeing their relief when they had prevented the kidnapping. They both embraced him and cried in relief that they're only child hadn't been taken away.
When it came down to it, James was torn about this choice.
He wanted to become an Avenger but he didn't want to hurt his family.
With a heavy sigh, he sat up and left his room. He went to the room his parent's used as a media room. On a bookshelf, there was an organized collection of battles and moments in the recent history that his parent's had been involved in.
He loved watching how much his parent's were involved in things that helped change and shape the way things were. He especially loved watching the documentaries of his father during the war. Although it was strange to see them in black and white.
Taking one of the DVD's on one of his father's later missions during the war and placed it in the DVD slot. He sat and watched as the events played out on the screen.
The soldiers that followed the brave and fearless Captain America into battle, the higher ranking officials that gave him their absolute trust and respect, the way that the country adored Steve Rogers for the way he turned the war around.
James knew that, even if he accepted Nick Fury's offer, there was no way that he could have a legacy as great as his father's. No one would ever have a legacy as great as Steve Rogers.
"It's not an easy choice to make, is it?"
James looked up and saw his dad as he sat next to him.
"No. It's not." James answered.
"I figured it might be hard. You've been thinking about this for nearly six days." Steve said. "It doesn't take long for you to make a choice when it comes to something you really want."
"I really want to accept and be the first next Avenger but I don't want to worry you or mom. After what happened when I was twelve, I don't want to see you both so upset again." James admitted.
Steve looked at his son with a small smile.
"That was a nightmare for the both of us." he said. "Just seeing someone holding you hostage, threatening to take you away from us...It was the scariest moment I had ever experienced."
"Really? Even though you were so many wars and battles?" James asked surprised.
"It was." Steve answered. "Nothing scared me more until the moment I thought that I was going to lose you forever. I hated that thought. Hated that I thought I was going to lose the most valuable thing in my life. But James, don't let that knowledge keep you from doing what you want. If you want to become the next first Avenger, then you do it. Even if you didn't accept it, your mother and I would still be protective of you. We've taught you all the training methods we know and have seen that you are capable of standing up for yourself. We'll support you in whatever you choose to do."
James smiled and hugged his father.
"Thanks dad."

Steve and Natasha stood in Fury's office along with the director. The three were waiting for James to arrive.
The teen had said that he would arrive with his answer at noon. It was five minutes until that time. The three were wondering what James decided.
"What do you think?" Natasha asked the director.
"I believe that he will follow in the footsteps of his parent's." Fury answered.
"What exactly will his duties be if he becomes the leader?" Natasha asked.
"He will do the same things as your husband." Fury answered. "Naturally, I won't put them into positions where they'll be in serious danger. Just keep them in a position where other teenagers may try to stay on the right path. Try to keep any future villans from surfacing."
Steve seemed to accept that answer. He was glad that his son wouldn't be doing the kinds of things he and Natsha often faced.
The door suddenly opened and three pairs of eyes went to the new guest. They spotted James standing there wearing a new uniform.
Red gloves that matched red boots, blue pants and a black jacket with a star going across the body.
"James," Natasha said as she walked over and met her son in a hug. She pulled back and smiled down at him. "This is a very stylish way of combining uniforms."
"I wanted to make sure that I had my own style but let everyone know how my parent's are." he answered.
"This will definatly let people know." Fury assured. "So I assume that you've accepted?"
"I have." James answered.
"Well," Fury said with a smile. "The world has second generation first Avenger."
