Chapter 389
.
Eve was able to get away from the compound fairly easily. With everyone addicted to drugs, and seven days until impact, discipline was a joke. As soon as she was out of eyesight Eve began giving her food and water to the first refugee children she saw. It wasn't hard to find them, they were everywhere. Eve began wishing she had stolen more, but this was all she could carry, and she'd killed a woman to get this. With all her food gone Eve wasn't sure what to do. It wouldn't be long before she needed another fix of heroin. She could try to keep stealing heroin from other addicts, for the remaining seven days, if she was willing to abandon whatever remained of her dignity. Suicide was certainly an option, end her suffering once and for all, hopefully. But Eve was hesitant, she feared the next life would be worse, given all that she'd done. There were wandering preachers all over, selling indulgences. They claimed that, for a little food and water, they could forgive any sin in God's name. One claimed he could even forgive someone who violated Mary, mother of Christ. Eve was almost desperate enough to believe them. She kept walking around the ruins of D.C. for awhile. She saw a woman who looked like her, high on heroin. Eve approached her, hoping he could trade something for another fix, or rob her if neccessary. The other woman promised to share with Eve, if she was willing to have sex with her right away. Eve was desperate enough to agree to this. It seemed she had no dignity left.
