Chapter 395
.
Eve was sleeping in her usual corner, she was half-awake. A part of her instinct was to see if the other morlocks were all asleep, if so maybe she could escape. But where could she go? It didn't seem to matter, barely one day until impact. Not even plural days, singular now. Then Eve heard a commotion, voices yelling for her to get up. She opened her eyes, soldiers were arresting the other morlocks. They quickly arrested Eve. She saw the woman who first lured her into this life. Although she had hand-cuffs on, she seemed to be cooperating with the soldiers. Eve wasn't sure what deal she might've made with them, but even that deal was no longer an option for Eve. Soon, it would finally be over with.
The courts were gone. The six morlocks were brought outside, forced on their knees. Colonel Greer was in charge, would be acting as judge, jury, and likely executioner. This seemed to have little to do with justice, merely killing the morlocks to ensure their survival. Greer explained the rules to the six defendants. One by one the morlock woman would say what they had done, they would have a chance to explain themselves or deny the charges. Greer would decide who was telling the truth, and execute the other. The morlock woman had come to them, the plea bargain had been that she would be the last person executed. She also feared Eve was really involved with Satan, wanted to atone for her sins with God before impact. Not much of a deal, but she was in a better position than Eve at the moment. The trials didn't take long. They started with the morlocks' new leader. He'd come to power by killing and eating his predeccessor the previous night. But it seemed he'd have little time to enjoy his throne. The witness testified about his actions, he denied murder and cannibalism charges, said he'd been their hostage. Judge Greer found him guilty, and shot him in the head immediately, in front of everyone. Two of the other defendants also claimed innocence, the other two said they had no choice, they did what they had to do to survive. And it seemed Greer was also doing what she had to do. One by one she executed each of them, leaving only Eve. This was what remained of America's once great justice system. Most would've preferred returning to the old beuracratic mess, but there wasn't enough time. When it was Eve's turn she told the truth. After the lst three and a half years, and with less than 24 hours until impact, Eve had neither the strengthnor the resolve to lie. To her credit the morlock woman admitted she had no evidence that Eve had really communed with the devil, only the leader's heart-attack. No reason to commit perjury, not when she was within spitting distance of saint Peter. Both women acknowledged that Eve had been held against her will, tried to stop the murder of infants, but had helped keep the morlocks alive, and cannibalized the previous leader. They'd all be dead soon, whether by gunshot, or ELE. Judge Greer deliberated for a few minutes. At this point Eve was too weak to get up anyway, hoped Greer would just shoot her here. Then, to the suprise of many, judge Greer pronounced Eve not guilty.
