Chapter 398
.
Noone stopped Eve or even asked questions as she crept into the White House. They saw Eve's gun, and watched it from a distance. They seemed to hope she'd use this on herself, at which point they could take it from her corpse. The White House was burned, blown-flesh on the walls. This must've been from the martyr-bombings Eve heard about. By now the scavengers had stolen what remained of the food. People were taking cyanide pills in the halls. This was clearly the end. Eve was glad to finally leave this horrile world. What could she have been thinking, bringing a child into this world? On Febuary 4th there were over 8 billion people on Earth. Today, less than 4 billion. Just under one percent of this population was safely in the Arks, enough to keep the human race going, but as for the rest, this White House was as good as it got. As Eve searched the rooms she saw a figure hiding in the curtains, too small to be the president. Eve looked behind to see a frightened little boy, Kyle Singer. Eve's first instinct was to hold him, comfort him. Kyle looked like he was scared of the gun. Eve put the gun in her pocket and hugged him.
.
Eve: It's going to be okay Kyle.
Kyle: They tried to kill me.
Eve: Who tried to kill you?
Kyle: That girl, Zoey. She and others. At first they just gave us food, but I didn't eat any because I was scared. I wanted to make sure the younger kids ate first. I didn't know.
Eve: It's not your fault.
Kyle: Zoey layed down with the twins, her brother and sister, until they fell asleep. Then with other children. When they didn't wake up, some of us refused to eat. So the adults forced it into them. Little children, led by the hand. Some tried to get away, but the adults wouldn't let them. Crying babies had poison placed into their mouths.
Eve: And you hid. You did the right thing, you survived. Are there other children still alive?
Kyle: I think so. Some were going to hide in the empty kitchen cabinets.
Eve: Stay here. I'll make sure that the bad man never hurts anyone again.
