Chapter 400

.

Eve thought about her choices. To murder the presient and turn the gun on herself, or try to survive in the bunker. At first the choice seemed clear, Mason was her enemy, he'd done much to earn the reputation of "Monster." And what did Eve have to live for anyway? Then she remembered Kyle. He'd said there were likely other children hiding. If Mason was telling the truth Eve might actually be able to get some of them to safety. But maybe he was lying. Even so she had an obligation to those kids. As much as Eve wanted to hurt George Mason, and die herself, she couldn't abandon those kids. Eve said "Go to Hell" to the president and walked away.

After sparing George Mason's life Eve found Kyle Singer again. She took him down to the bunker. The soldiers guarding it let them inside. Mason evidently told them to let this secretary, and any kids she brought down, into the bunker. When they got in they saw that Christina Cox, now a major, was in charge here. This place seemed nice. Enough canned goods to survive a siege, chairs and couches that weren't too dusty, televisions, clean bathrooms, even toys and board games. Eve told Kyle to watch the younger kids who were already down here. She was going to find the kids who were allegedly hiding in the kitchen cabinets.

Eve found kids hiding in the kitchen cabinets. Four to be precise. They seemed hesitant to trust anyone over the age of thirteen. She couldn't blame them. One said how Mason had promised to award medals to some of the children who had been soldiers, only to lead them to their deaths. She eventually convinced them she could be trusted, although Eve wasn't sure about that. After bringing them to the bunker Eve ate a dinner of rice and beans. She knew she had to eat or she'd collapse. But she ate quickly, she feared that every minute she spent down here she might be missing a child hiding somewhere. There were regular gunshots, soldiers mostly who didn't want to outlive this country by even an hour, a minute. Eve feared a child might catch a stray bullet, she wanted to save the children. Eve went back, found two more children, convinced them to come with her. After that Eve saw the clock, 12:34am. If that clock was right, it was July 20th 2036, the day of impact. Not even one day left. Today was the day the world would end.
