Chapter 401
.
It had been at least an hour since Eve realized it was after midnight. Possibly two or three hours. She hadn't found any children since then, but kept looking. But then major Cox called Eve back to the bunker. She'd done the math, they were filled to capacity. Even if Eve found one more childm it wouldn't be accepted. Eve needed to come down now. It was still dark, she would never see the sun again. Eve wished she had taken one last moment to enjoy it today, or yesterday. Eve could still hear crying. She didn't know if it was a child crying for help, or maybe they were her own tears. Whatever the cause Eve made her way to the bunker.
In the bunker major Cox briefed everyone. If this thing was intact after the wave hit, they could stay. But if it were damaged too much, they'd leave. They'd try to find an Ark that would take them in. The hope was that after so much death and suffering, the Ark's leaders would feel sentimental enough to let 36 refugees live, or less people depending on how many they lost along the way. They had suits in the bunker to survive the cold and provide oxygen, which would hopefully last for the entire trip. This bunker had been built to survive a nuclear war, but there was only one way to know for certain. And that was coming soon.
