Cox's group watched president Mason's final address from the bunker. The sun was rising in the background. This would be the last sunrise this sorry world would ever see.

Mason: My fellow Americans. Our final attempt to stop ELE, has failed. In less than an hour it will hit the Atlantic ocean. Much of Washington D.C. will be destroyed in the ensuing tidal wave, along with the rest of the eastern seaboard. It will create a cloud of dust that the sun will be unable to penetrate for the next century. All plant life will die within two weeks, all animals will die with a month. If you have any way to take cover, any private shelter you might've built, go there now. If not, I suggest you hold your loved ones close, comfort each other during these final minutes. The human race will survive within the Arks. But the old world dies today, and most of us with it. I have failed you. I can only apologize, hope for your forgiveness, and God's. We are a planet of many religions. Whatever name we choose to call God, Allah, great spirit, Ahura Mazda, Irzu, we will all be praying today. Pray that God accepts us into his glory. I cannot claim to know God's will. Over the last four years, we've tried to perform God's will. Every one of us has made mistakes. But the worst of us has done good, and the best of us has done evil. I supposse we'll find out soon how well we've done in his eyes. Goodbye, and God bless all of you.
