Chapter 404
.
Upon waking up this morning Eve's first thought was "How many days until impact?" Then she remembered, impact had already occurred, one day ago. This habit wouldn't be kicked in just one day. All the adults ate a big breakfast today, they needed their strength. It took much of it to open the bunker doors. The water was mostly gone, but what remained had already begun turning into ice. They opened the doors, and were immediately hit with the freezing cold. The kids were already bundled into their suits. The adults did this now, they'd kept them off because they needed the extra strength without them on, a decision they now regretted. The adults put them on and packed what food they could carry and went up to the surface, and a new world. The White House was gone, destroyed by the tidal wave. They couldn't see any buildings still intact. But as far as the eye could see there were parts of buildings, and bodies, everywhere. Eve could only imagine the buildings swimmng around this tidal wave, hitting bodies that were hopefully already dead. Walking would be difficult with this rubble now. The night vision glass of these suits could help them see a little bit ahead, but one could still step on something incredibly sharp and dangerous. But they would have to keep moving, if they were to have any chance of surviving. The sun was gone, their lights would have to see as far ahead as they could. And a device to recieve signals from the nearby Ark, it would tell them how far they had to go, they didn't have to wander aimlessly in the dark. This was the new world, no beautiful Millenial Kingdom as Walker and Jenkins had promised. This was just cold, and quiet. A barren wasteland about to kill off whatever life remained.
