Chapter 406
.
As the two sides tended to the wounded Eve saw that Kyle was hurt. He had already been sick and weak before the fight. Kyle's outlook wasn't good. Major Cox examined him quickly then spoke to Eve in private.
.
Cox: He won't make it. We can't take him with us.
Eve: I can't leave him to die here.
Cox: You should say goodbye, then put him out of his misery.
Eve: I don't have much of a soul left in me anymore. But, whatever I do have, I just can't kill another child.
Cox: I'll do it, if you want.
Eve: No. I'm staying with him. I'll stay behind if I have to.
Cox: Fair enough. After, if you can, try to catch up with us.
.
Before the new herd left major Cox gave Eve a phone. With this she could communicate with the Arks, and any private shelters that might still be standing. There was another who refused to leave. He was from the other herd. His lover was seriously wounded, couldn't even be moved. Eve respected these men more than major Cox. He told Eve and a motel very close. These two could hold up there, try to keep warmer. Eve thanked the man and took Kyle to this abandoned roadside motel. A thought occurred to Eve as she took Kyle. During the fight her side had hit the other side's ice rocks with tree branches. They'd either just fought in World War IV, or played in the last game of baseball ever.
