Chapter 407

.

Upon arriving at this motel Eve was suprised. There was still a mattress, bathroom with toilet and shower. She would've been suprised if the plumbing or electricity still worked, but this would do, at least for now. They had some lights, enough food for at least a few days, their oxygen would last a few days after the natural air became unbearable. Eve gave Kyle the bed, and the phone. With this phone Kyle could access whatever television stations were still airing. The pickings on that front were slim. Some religious networks were still broadcasting. The Trinity Broadcasting Network, an evangelistic muslim network, both were airing shows, including old recordings of their clergy. They seemed to be trying to bring a few final souls to their side. Making final pushes until the very end. Kyle also found some cartoons that appeared to be running in an eternal loop. This did help pass the time. Eve would go out at times, gather some snow and melt it for water. Each time it let some freezing air inside. Eve worried it would make Kyle's wound worse. But it was the only way to avoid dehydration. This snow kept building. Eventually they wouldn't be able to open the door. They also might have to use their artificial oxygen sooner as a result. Starvation, freezing, dehydration, suffocation. At this point it seemed to just be a matter of how to die.

Eve looked at the smart phone again. July 25th 2036. Less than a week ago she'd been hiding in a dank hole with the morlocks. Now, she was again trapped in a hole. She thought about this "date." It seemed innacurate. Nobody outside the Arks were following calendars. The Arks were likely using a different calendar, starting with this year, year one, the year of impact. The roof here in the motel was leaking, letting in some water to drink. It also meant that fairly soon, the roof would collapse, burying Eve and Kyle. The question was, would they already be dead when that happenned? Eve wouldn't leave Kyle. If she was going to die she wanted to die with company. She knew she couldn't make it to the Ark in her state. They'd been communicating with a man in a private shelter nearby. Eve thought she might be able to get there alone, but Kyle wouldn't survive the trip. And this man, who only called himself "Canary" couldn't leave his home to get to them. Kyle was cold, Eve feared he wouldn't last the day. There was one way to keep him warm, keep them both warm, but Eve hesitated. She knw that Kylehad a crush on her, but the thought made Eve sick. It hardly seemed fair that Kyle should die before experiencing this, but Eve knew it was wrong. She'd done some very bad things over the last three and a half years, but did she really want to lower herself to that level?
