Chapter 408
.
From her corner in the motel room Eve coul see Kyle's light, but tried not to look at him. It was very dark, had to conserve energy. They had little food, maybe they could drink melted snow. Eve knew that Kyle would die soon, then she would try to get to Canary whoever he was. For whatever reason Canary wouldn't reveal his face, only typed up messages. Perhaps Canary was ashamed to show his face, had done some bad things. Eve could relate. She was ashamed of what she'd done with Kyle, but it kept them both warm. Bought them both some more time. And now, she was waiting, giving Kyle what comfort she could. After he passed Eve planned to try and make it to Canary. The longer Kyle held on the less likely Eve could survive her tree. She wasn't sure which one she wanted.
After Kyle went silent Eve checked on him, no pulse. She tried reviving him, no success. Maybe if she had medical equipment or training she could save him. But he was gone now. As sorry as she was about Kyle's death, there was no time to waste. Eve said "rest in peace Kyle." She put the pillow over his face, making absolutely sure she wasn't abandoning him before he died, but she couldn't even bury him. The snow would take him soon. Eventually Kyle would become a part of the elements. Eve grabbed the food she had, put her suit on, got her light and smartphone, and took off to find Canary.
Upon leaving the motel room Eve checked her smartphone. It was 11:14pm, July 25th. She tried not to look at it again. It was probably after midnight, which made today July 26th. Six days after impact. Hard to believe that less than one week ago there had been sunlight. The snow was now up to her knees, and kept coming down. This made walking difficult, but it could be done, and Eve followed Canary's signal. She was now probably in what was once West Virginia. It seemed possible that Canary, whoever he was, had built a home in the woods. If it was on a public street the mob would've ripped it apart trying to get inside before impact. Eve couldn't make it to the Ark, but she might make it to Canary. She ate her last remaining food. Eve used her smartphone to play very loud music. It seemed like a very good way to stay awake. Eve knew if she passed out she would never wake up. And the suit only kept her so warm, there was a temptation to fall asleep. She wasn't sure what time it was. If she followed the old calendars it was Saturday. Eve still remembered when Saturday mornings were for cartoons, Saturday nights were for dates. But those days were over. Then Eve saw a light. At first she hoped the sun had returned. The she realized, it was a house, with lights on. Eve looked at the phone, this was Canary's house. She got to the house as quick as she could. The snow was almost covering the door. But a man opened it and let her in. With all the snow Eve could barely make out a face. The man helped her dry off as Eve adjusted her eyes. She was shocked when she saw Canary's actual face. It was Adam.
