Chapter 409

.

Eve couldn't believe her eyes. Adam, her oldest friend, her first kiss. He'd not only survived, he was giving her shelter. They'd seen each other only once on the last three years, when they were enemies. Adam said they had the place to themselves. The roofs were built to withstand the snow, enough food in the basement to last decades. This place had its own oxygen and water filtration system. This place wasn't too bad, but it was likely they'd be here for the rest of their lives. Eve had a lot of questions, she assumed Adam did too She had to eat, get out of her wet clothes. But for right now, she just needed to cry in Adam's arms for a few minutes.

Eve took a shower, her first in a while. This got the snow and smell off her. But it couldn't erease her past. Eve hoped Adam wouldn't recognize her red lips, her tired eyes could be explained easily enough. After the shower Adam gave Eve some dry clothes to put on. They were a bit loose, like they were made for a person who hadn't spent days at a time starving. They were also old, the clothes Eve's grandmother would've worn. After Eve changed Adam made her a tv dinner to eat. Never had frozen meatloaf tasted so good to Eve. While eating Eve noticed pictures. An old man and woman, some younger versions of these people scatterred throught. No pictures of Adam, or Claire. Adam said they had the place all to themselves. She realized Claire had likely not survived. Seeing his face, it was hard to believe this was the same little boy that she'd grown up with. Eve doubted that her own face was recognizable. Adam and Eve would have a lot of questions, and all the time in the world to ask them. After her meal Eve began talking to Adam.

.

Eve: I have a few questions, if you don't mind.

Adam: Ask away. One thing we have plenty of now i time.

Eve: Whose place is this?

Adam: Colonel Picard. He was retired army, before 2/4. Helped build this place with Ravenwood technology. Planned to take care of hi wife, Emily, even after impact. But Emily died of a heart attack, just before World War III. After that Picard re-enlisted, ended up as my commanding officer. Shortly before the final lottery, Claire and I made a vow. If we weren't both chosen, we'd dessert together. Spend our final days in each other's arms. Picard found out. I thought he was going to shoot us on the spot, but he gave us the keys to here. He said he hoped we were as happy as he and Emily were. But Claire, she died on the way here.

Eve: I'm sorry. I only met her that one time, but she seemed nice. Even after I admitted what I'd done, kissed her boyfriend, she tried to make me a christian, save my poor excuse for a soul.

Adam: Yeah. Claire tried to save me, even after I admitted what I'd done to you. She was a good person.

Eve: Why did you hit me?

Adam: I was stupid, selfish. There's no excuse for what I did. I'm sorry.

Eve: Any other reason?

Adam: I don't understand.

Eve: Adam, you're my oldest friend. You know me better than anyone. I was just wondering if you saw something that told you, I was a bad person. That I deserved to suffer.

Adam: What I did was my sin. You have nothing to be ashamed of.

Eve: Yes I do. I've done some bad things. Things I can never take back.

Adam: So have I. Everyone alive today has had to make some hard choices these last few years.

Eve: The good ones are gone now. We did horrible things, and still didn't make it into the Arks.

Adam: But we made it here. All we can do is help each other, and communicate with the Arks.

Eve: We need each other. Thank you for saving me.

Adam: Always.
