Chapter 413

.

The next few days were an adjustment for Eve. She felt both love and hatred for Adam. Love for the little boy she'd grown up with, hatred for the soldier who'd killed her brothers and sisters-in-arms. But Adam was right about one thing, they would need to work together to survive. He taught Eve more about the greenhouse, the filtration system. The question remained, could she both hate and love him at the same time? If so, could they live together? After she hit him Adam gave Eve a peace offering. Eve could have all the twinkies. She coul eat them all now, or hoard them until she was dead. Either way he wouldn't touch them. Eve ate two this first day. It felt good to have a treat again. Eve knew she'd have to live with this man for the rest of her life. It would be better to get along. On August 1st Eve gave Adam a twinkie and they ate this treat together.

In the early days of August 2036 there were still reports of communities surviving. Those still around were based on hunting, and trying to keep warm. Likely there were tribal leaders emerging, like Elliot. They almost certainly ruled with an iron fist, possibly keeping others alive before themselves. Eve liked to think he was still alive, still trying to keep his people alive. But the cold laws of physics said they would die soon. Still, guys like Elliot wouldn't surrender without a fight, not until the very end. She saw a transmission from her old friend Anne, now in what was left of Brooklyn. There was no law here. People were just praying together, sharing what little food remained. Reverand Jenkins had died, saving his last food for his wife to eat after he starved. One rumor said people were trying to keep warm in the great library in Alexandria Osaze. This library was centuries old. The point was to have a written copy of every book ever written, or at least close to it. Most books were scanned into the Arks' computers, they also had hard copies of much of it. But on the outside, the library's books were being burned for warmth. Some christians and muslims were trying to protect copies of the Bible and the Koran. Others would likely become desperate enough to burn even them.
