Chapter 423

.

When Eve woke up this day the scent of ocean water was already in her nose. Hope's crying woke her and Adam up, but that was to be expected. Eve got up and fed her daughter. Hope might be a lactaid-vampire draining mommy dry, but at least her word of the day wasn't "Scream" at least not yet. Eve hoped the baby's crying wasn't waking her parents up, but Zack and Kendall were up soon enough. They made breakfast and brought the family outside by the beach. The vacation to Wildwood was Adam and Eve's last hurrah before college. When Eve got pregnant las year people thought college wasn't realistic. But Eve did her internship in D.C. last summer, which she'd earned before becoming pregnant. Given all the rumors about president Mason, some joked he was the father, but he never tried anything with Eve. She admired him, became friends with his son Jed and vice-president Allen's daughter Zoey, who was also Jed's girlfriend. This was the final year of Mason's second term. Come November Eve would vote for Kimberly Allen to become America's 48th, and first female, president. College would be difficult with a baby, but Adam and Eve felt they could do it. For now, they were enjoying this day at the beach with Hope, their parent, and Cujo. A number of friends were here too. Nadia and Jamal, who Eve felt would marry one day. Amy, who used to have a crush on Eve, who had once tried to kiss Eve, and whom Eve tried to let down easy. All had chosen this weekend to come to Wildwood. It was July 20th 2036, less than two months until college started. This life wasn't easy, but Eve was happy. In this moment, surrounded by family and friends, Eve felt content. Then the Earth shook, very briefly. Eve grabbed Hope to comfort her. Perhaps this was an earthquake, but it seemed too short. The birds were trying to fly away, Cujo seemed agitated. Then Eve saw why. A wave, bigger than the buildings, coming towards them. Eve was frozen in shock, they were all about to die.
