Chapter 424
.
Eve woke up in bed alongside sleeping Adam. That part of the dream was accurate. She had been happier, blissfully ignorant of ELE. But it still came, the end was inevitable, but perhaps it would've been better not to live in fear for three years. Eve remembered it was October 2036. By the end of the month the entire outside world would be covered in snow. Eve decided to go up to the attic, look out the window again. The only thing outside was snow and darkness. But for now she could still look outside. Eve sat in the attic alone. Adam came up to join her before long.
.
Adam: Enjoying it while it lasts?
Eve: Yeah. Now I see snow falling in darkness. Eventually, just snow. Did this house always look worse than it is?
Adam: I think so. Picard made it look run down. If it looked too good, people would take it from him.
Eve: Smart man. Pity he didn't make it.
Adam: I prefer to think of this place as a monument to love. He built it to protect his wife. After she died, he didn't want to live in it.
Eve: So Picard gave it to a young couple in love. Except Claire never made it here.
Adam: But you did. What are the odds that we'd both survive all we've been through, much less find our way back to each other? I can't explain it, except that God protects us. We both loved and lost, but we can be there for each other. Ultimately, this place is a monument to love.
Eve: That's kind of sweet. And I can only hope that my daughter finds someone who makes her as happy as you make me.
Adam: Maybe she can name her first child Adam.
Eve: That would be good.
