I'm back with another (regrettably short) chapter. Sorry about the shortness, but at least I'm updating. I'm at my grandparent's house, so me being on the computer with my headphones in, probably not what I should be doing. Anyway, MERRY CHRISTMAS! HAPPY HOLIDAYS! (I know it's not actually Christmas, but close enough, just incase I don't get anything else done.)
Disclaimer: not mine!
We share a quiet breakfast between the two of us. By the time we finish eating Christina and Will have come to join us with their breakfasts.
"So I heard that there are two cityscapes per person. One is you against the "controllers" and the other is you paired with someone else against another pair of initiates. This time it could be you with a Dauntless born though," Christina says.
"How do you hear about all of this stuff before we do?" I say, half laughing. "It's like you're a gossip and information magnet."
Christina flips her hair and flashes me a smile; "I try."
We finish breakfast and head to the training room. When we get there, Amar, Shauna and Lauren are there along with some of the other Dauntless born, including Uriah, Zeke, Lynn and Marlene. Hanging on the wall is a board showing what order we will be going into the cityscape in. Today is the individual day.
The order alternates between Dauntless born and transfers. Many of the Dauntless born I don't recognize so my eyes automatically filter them out.
Drew, Peter, Eric, Marlene, Christina, Zeke, Will, Uriah, Four, Lynn, Tris.
I'm not the last as there are more Dauntless born than transfers, but I'm the last of the transfers. There are also obviously more between our names, but they don't mean anything to me, just letters, so I ignore them.
We get started right away as the tests all take at least 20 minutes. We watch the first Dauntless born go in. Once they start the test, we are left looking at a door. Not very exciting, so we break into groups to talk.
Four, Christina, Will, Uriah, Zeke, Marlene, Lynn and I all go and sit in a corner. At first we discuss what the test might be like, but after the first Dauntless born comes back out, out of breath, scratched and beaten up, we change the topic to other, more light- hearted conversations.
"So… I heard from a little birdie that you and Tris are a thing now." Zeke says directing it towards Four.
I look up, a blush staining my cheeks, and I see Four staring, more glaring, at Zeke. This is definitely Four, the Dauntless prodigy, not Tobias.
"Ya Four," Uriah says, ganging up on his with his twin, "What's that all about?"
Four turns his glare to Uriah.
"Ok, chill dude, we were just curious," Uriah says putting his hands up in a look of surrender.
Zeke suddenly turns his attention to me. "Whoa, I'm not saying anything either," I say, recoiling a bit. "And don't look at me like that, you're creeping me out." Zeke has his hand under his chin, eyes opened wide in a peering stare.
Christina suddenly speaks up, "All I know is that it happened gradually, but I think it was official the night we played paintball." Leave it to Christina to gossip while we're sitting right here.
"At least I know there is someone I can count on for good gossip around here!" Zeke says this while trying to sound like a little girl. I will never understand him.
"Maybe some people just want to keep their private lives, I don't know, private." Lynn says this impatiently.
"Well, you should all be fascinated that Uriah and Marlene are now something as well." Zeke says the last part before either Uriah or Marlene can stop him.
A chorus of congrats' go around.
"Well then Zeke," Uriah says, revenge in his voice, "I think they would also be fascinated to know that you were flirting it up with dear Shauna over there."
"Hey!" Zeke shouts as his leaps over to start fighting with Uriah. It's obviously a play fight, one without any malicious intent.
"Ok, break it up guys," Lynn says, the ever present voice of reason, she has a hint of laughter though, probably from having to do this hundreds of times over the years she has known them.
Soon, more and more of our group leave to go to the cityscape. We wait out our turns patiently, but by the time that only Four, Lynn and I are left, I have started bouncing my leg up and down impatiently.
I wish a simple good luck to Tobias before he goes in, and then it's just Lynn and me sitting and waiting in the lonely training room.
A buzzer sounds around 15 minutes after Four went in. He's as fast as ever, beating the minimum time, and then Lynn leaves with a shouted, "I'm coming!" to the empty room.
I wait and the 25 minutes it takes Lynn seems like forever while I wait by myself.
The buzzer sounds and I nearly jump out of my skin. The combination of nerves, my thoughts and the silence made my senses on high alert.
I stand up and walk to the door leading to the cityscapes, shaking out my stiff limbs as I go.
I pull the door open and all of a sudden I'm standing on the balcony of an apartment building, looking out onto a deserted street.
Do you prefer me calling Four/Tobias Four or Tobias? I find myself switching back and forth depending on the moment. I was just wondering what you would prefer me calling him. Happy Holidays! (Yay no school)
