Hey! Sorry I haven't updated recently. (I'm really quite terrible about it.) But, I have school off today because Chicago has turned into the Arctic Tundra. Kidding, but not really. So, I get a "cold day" off of school, and you get a new chapter. It's seriously so cold here though. It's already my second day canceled this year because of the cold.
Disclaimer: Not mine!
I see a gun hanging on the wall of the building and I quickly snatch it, checking to make sure there are bullets in it, there are, but they're blanks. Next to the gun is a note with an address; I figure I must have to go there. Now, how to get off the balcony? I can't go back through the door, and there are no stairs, or ropes.
I look down and around, searching for anything that might help. While I do this, I'm wondering where my "enemies" are. I'm an open target right now, where are they?
I figure that getting to the ground will be the best bet. And then figure out where to address is from there. I wonder what this test will help with, but I don't have time to figure it out because I see the barrel of a gun over the roof of a building opposite me. They haven't started shooting yet, so, I figure they think I don't know they're there. Let's keep it that way.
I tuck the gun into the waistband of my jeans, making sure the safety is on. I swing my leg over the railing and hold in with my hands. My other leg follows and now all that is keeping me from falling is the railing that my hands are gripping and the tiny piece of balcony my toes are grabbing to from in my boots.
I take a deep breath and take my feet off so I'm hanging by my arms. It's only vertical monkey bars, Tris. Calm down. Yes, vertical monkey bars where I could fall to my death. I work my way down the railing and swing back in forth. I have to time this perfectly to get into the next balcony and not the pavement below. I release the railing-
-and I land safely in the balcony below mine. I repeat this the whole way down the building. I'm getting nervous though. Where are the challenges that I'm supposed to face? It's been deadly silent so far.
I get to the street level and realize that this is a neighborhood in Chicago; at least I don't have to figure out where the address is. I already know.
I scan the street, looking for anything suspicious. The only thing that's suspicious is the lack of anything suspicious.
I take the gun out of my jeans and put it in front of me, arms outstretched. I have to be prepared.
I don't see anything though, so I keep close to the buildings and run in the direction of the address.
I feel the like someone is following me. Of course they would be. Duh. I roll my eyes at my foolishness. They're probably waiting for me to relax and just focus forward, then they'll grab me. Not going to happen.
I pretend to do what they want, seeming to relax on the outside, but secretly even more tense on the inside. We're only 16, what do they want us to do? Become Super Soldiers?
I keep jogging, trying to find a corner to suit my needs. Soon I find one. The building across the street has a huge window display. Perfect. I turn the corner and duck into a doorway to wait, hoping they fall for my trick.
In the window, I see a team of three come from the street I just turned off of. My palms start to sweat; can I take all three? I turn the safety off of my gun, I've got to time this perfectly.
They round the corner and seem confused as to where I could have gone. The leader of the group tells the other two to search for me. He turns his back to me. I point and shoot. It hits him in the back and he falls. At the sound of my gunshot, the other two come running back. They pull out their guns, but before they can get a shot off. I'm already moving. I duck into another doorway, peeking around.
I get the shots off quickly. All that practice helped.
I can't relax though, that can't be the only test in this cityscape, but I have to keep moving.
I continue towards my destination, looking for possible traps and ambushes. I will not let my guard down. I see possible traps in the street and the sidewalk, ruble or buckles in the sidewalk or road. Either: I'm really smart, and avoiding all the challenges, or this is really easy. Or something huge is coming.
I look down at the paper in my hand, I'm nearing the address. I then notice the extra numbers at the end. Floor and cell numbers. They want my to break someone out of a prison?
I reach the corner nearest the address and peak around it to see two guards in front of the doors, with security cameras as well. Hmm.
I scan the building, trying to find an access point with minimal security. I look at the paper again. Floor 6, cell 4. I count the floors on the outside of the building. Six. The prisoner is on the top floor. A plan forms in my mind. I run a block away from the building and cross over so that I'm on the back of the prison. But that's not my destination, next door is. I break the lock and go in through the back. I climb the stairs and stop in one of the floors to find a soda bottle. Once I do, I open the door to the roof. Luckily, there are no guards on the roof.
I judge the distance between the two buildings. It's doable. I take a running start and leap to the prison building. I land with a roll, shaking off the dirt as I stand.
I put the soda bottle onto the gun. Supposedly it's supposed to silence the gun, we'll see.
Now, how to get into the prison. Maybe I should have thought this through more carefully. I then notice a service entrance; I'm in luck. Hopefully it won't have a camera trained on it. I try to open the door, but it's locked. I guess I'll have to test the silencer. I shoot the lock, ready for the guards to be on me in a second. But none come, the door swings open and I step inside, my eyes adjusting to the dark.
I open the door that leads to the prison and quickly close it again, there's a guard right there. I take a deep breath, hoping he's passed. I open the door, leap out and hit him with the butt of my gun, knocking him out.
I drag him into the service area. I steal his keys, I'll need them for later, and take his uniform jacket off and the other defining pieces I need. I slip out the door then and head to find cell 4.
It doesn't take long. The prison isn't that large. Sitting on her cot is a young Amity girl, at least that's what she looks like. I'm guessing she's just supposed to make it harder; she can't help me with her escape.
I unlock her door and whisper, "Hey, come on, I'm getting you out of here. Don't say anything."
She nods, her eyes wide. I know this is all made up, but they make it seem real.
"Do you think you can jump to another roof?"
She shakes her head, no.
Ok. Time for a new plan.
"I'm going to pretend that I'm transferring you to a different prison, ok? Just trust me, let me handcuff you."
She turns around, putting her trust in me completely. I snap the handcuffs on, tight enough to look real, but not enough to hurt her.
We make our way to the exit and we get all the way to the exit with no one asking any questions. Until now.
"Where do you think you're taking her?" A big guard comes up behind us.
"I'm transferring her to a different prison. Problem?"
"Yes, no one ever notified me about this transfer."
I motion for him to come closer. I whisper to him, "I'm taking her to Erudite, they have a secret project going on. I wasn't supposed to say anything. It's all very hush-hush. No one can know."
He nods in understanding. Apparently this happens often.
We're allowed to continue out the door. When we walk outside, Amar is waiting for us.
"Nicely done, Tris." He says.
"Thank you, is that all?"
"For today, yes. Tomorrow, everyone has another cityscape to complete."
"Did everyone have to rescue her?" I say gesturing to the girl.
"Yes, some version of it. No one was quite as inventive as you though. The roof, the Erudite testing. Very nice. You also completed it the second fastest. Four was first. Congrats."
"Thank you."
"You're welcome. If you walk through that door," he say, pointing across the street, "You'll be in the Pit."
"Ok, this is quite the secret city you have here."
"Yes it is."
I nod and walk through the door and into the hustle and bustle of the Pit.
Just in case you were wondering, I got the idea for the cityscape from Mockingjay. Not quite as intense as all the Capitol traps the Star Team faces, but hey, I don't have the imagination, otherwise I would write my own book, not write about other ones. (Can't believe they already released the first poster for Part 1! How are they going to make two parts?). Also, while I was writing this school for tomorrow was canceled! Yay! (Hopefully they don't add days at the end of the year though). NO SCHOOL TODAY OR TOMORROW!
