Chapter 23: Misery Spiral

April 27, 12 pm, Pallet Town…

Platinum took out the small (very small) pie from the oven. The appearance itself was okay. She had no idea how it would taste, however. She took a small bite, which was still half of the pie itself. … No. This wasn't it. Not by a long shot. She ate the remainder of the pie, trying to see what was different with this taste and her memories of the pie (the one Diamond had made) and what could have caused the difference. Of course, since she was so inexperienced in cooking, she would not be able to find her flaws quickly. But she vowed to get the pie right and cheer up Diamond, no matter what.

Platinum wrote down possible causes of this difference on a notebook and made changes accordingly. She moved on to bake the next pie, hoping that she would get one step closer to her goal.

Suddenly, her Pokégear vibrated as it received a message. The girl perked up and quickly ran towards it, hoping that it was Diamond apologizing. A naïve hope, but she still held onto it… But it wasn't from Diamond. It was from Green, with a declaration of a mandatory Dex Holder meeting in 3 hours. Platinum let out a short sigh of disappointment but still replied to her senior that she would be there. Until then, she would work on the pies.

3 hours later…

Platinum entered Prof. Oak's lab, where the mandatory meeting would take place. There weren't a whole lot of people there, however. The heiress had found out that there were 15 Dex Holders in total, including herself. Pearl didn't know of the others yet, as he was still in the Johto Battle Frontier. So including herself, there should be 14 people attending the meeting. Diamond hadn't shown up. Platinum didn't know if that was good or bad. She wanted to see him, but only if he was happy and nice again. Right now, she was afraid to see him. So perhaps for now, it was a good thing that Diamond wasn't here.

Currently, there were 8 Dex Holders in the meeting. But apparently, Green felt that it was enough.

"So Blue, Yellow, Gold, Crystal, and Emerald are not coming," he said as he took a quick look around. "And we only have one Sinnoh Dex Holder attending. That'll have to do. First, Black and White, stand up."

The two Unova Dex Holders did as told. Black looking a little excited, and White looking rather uneasy.

"They're Unova Dex Holders, and they are our newest juniors," Green said. "Talk to them and get to know them better later. Similarly, Platinum, stand up."

Black and White sat down and Platinum stood up. She politely bowed to everyone as a greeting.

"She is the 11th Dex Holder, and currently the only one from Sinnoh attending. Again, talk to her and get to know her better later," Green said again. "Next, Ruby and Sapphire. Welcome to Kanto. It's been a while, but this unfortunately isn't the time to catch up. We'll have to talk later. Now. The pressing issues. One, we need to do something about the pack of fan girls. I saw them attacking Crystal, and this cannot continue. We need to brainstorm ideas to get them off of us. And the most pressing issue is Blue. I don't know what happened, but she seemed to have snapped. We need to find out why and figure out what can be done to get her back to normal. Also, no one has heard from or seen Crystal for the past couple of days. Again, we need to find out why and what we can do to help. Any other pressing issues?"

Platinum briefly contemplated in talking about her problem with Diamond, but decided to remain silent. This issue with Diamond… was a personal matter, and likely her fault. The sole responsibility was on her.

Green waited for someone to speak up, but no one did. "Okay then. About Crystal. The only new hint about what happened to her is the message that I got from Gold today. He said that he won't be attending this meeting if Crystal was coming as well. Something happened between the two, and that is likely the cause of Crystal's disappearance, especially after what happened between her and Blue. So Silver, do you think you can go and talk to Crystal and find out what's wrong?"

Silver shook his head. "I doubt she'll talk to me. She already told me that she liked Gold. So knowing that and after seeing what happened, she probably won't let me in."

Green slowly nodded. "In that case, I will go talk to her. Next, Blue. … I know I'm the reason why she snapped. And as such, I'll do all that I can to get her back to normal. But I don't know how, and she won't talk to me. Silver, I'm sure you're as surprised as I am about her sudden change. So go talk to her. You may be the only one who can convince her to talk to you."

"I don't know what good it'll do, but I'll try," Silver said quietly. "She never really talked to me about any of her problems, but maybe if I try hard enough, she might this time…"

"Good. Now, the fan girl issue is not as pressing as the issues with Blue and Crystal, so we'll discuss that in a future meeting. Until then, brainstorm ideas. I'll update you on the progress of Blue and Crystal if you want to stay up to date."

"Really Green? You call that a meeting?" came a female voice from behind.

Platinum turned around and to her surprise, she saw that same offensive girl from a few days ago, standing with her arms crossed and a smirk across her lips.

"Blue," Green started slowly. "We need to talk."

Platinum suddenly realized that this offensive girl… was Blue, the Kanto Dex Holder, and the one who had "snapped" according to Green. She was her senior. But she had insulted her quite badly. What to do…

Blue suddenly looked over at the heiress. "Well, look who it is. What happened to your two friends? Did they abandon you after realizing that you were just some spoiled brat?"

Platinum winced as she felt her senior's words stab at her heart. Ordinarily, those words would've hurt. But right now, with Diamond who may have really abandoned her, Blue's words were beyond painful. The heiress bit her lower lip as she forced herself to not shed a tear. It was very hard, though, as her heart did take multiple beatings recently. And after the bad first meetings with Sapphire, the insulting encounter with Blue the first time, and Diamond suddenly being mean to her, she was beginning to fear that she was just unlikeable. Blue insulting her again was making her fears much worse.

She suddenly felt… alone. Isolated. She had no one who would take her side. No one who would say nice things to her to make her feel better. … No Diamond…

"Oh, I'm sorry. Did I hurt your feelings?" Blue sneered with a smirk. Her expression suddenly turned ice cold. "Welcome to the real world. Get used to it."

Platinum wanted to say something, but she couldn't. No words would come out. And no words would express her current feelings. Blue would insult and offend her more and more if she tried to talk back. And she could not argue against her senior, especially when she just met everyone. Instead, she quietly rose to her feet.

"… Excuse me…" she mumbled before she quickly left the Dex Holder meeting. The pie… she had to finish it. She had to get Diamond on her side again. She desperately needed him…

Next day, April 28, 1 pm…

Platinum snapped out of her thoughts when there was a knock on the door to her hotel room. She paused the endless creations of pies and went over to answer it. She didn't expect anything, or hope anything. She wasn't even thinking clearly, as she was unable to. She had spent all night endlessly baking pies, each one slightly modified, hoping that she would get closer to her goal.

Much to her surprise, she found Red, Sapphire, and White waiting in the corridor. Platinum blinked a few times to finally register their presence.

"What are you…" she muttered, afraid that she wouldn't be able to bake any more pies that day. She didn't want to be distracted from her goal. She needed as much time as possible to perfect the pie, and yet, she needed to do it quickly.

"Hi, Platinum," Sapphire said nicely. The Hoenn Dex Holder was still trying her best to ease the tension between herself and the heiress, caused by their first meeting. Platinum appreciated her senior's efforts and did her part as well. She didn't want to be on bad terms with any of her seniors, especially right now.

"Let's talk for a bit," Red said warmly.

Platinum simply nodded and let them inside. The four Dex Holders soon sat at the dinner table, with Red sitting next to Platinum.

"First, I'll apologize on behalf of Blue," Red started. "Right now, she's… a little distressed, I suppose. Something really bad happened to her, and she's not acting like herself. She was harsh to Crys too, and now she's being mean to you. Don't take her words seriously. I know she doesn't mean it."

Platinum mindlessly nodded. "If you say so…"

"That said, it's probably best for you to avoid her until she's back to normal," Red continued. "So until then, you may have to stay in this hotel room. We'll visit you if you feel lonely."

"That said, come on, let's do something together," Sapphire suggested. "Like… eating something. Something smells really good here, and we haven't had lunch yet."

"Were you doing something, Lady Platinum?" White asked quietly.

Platinum glanced over at the kitchen. "I have been practicing baking pies. It is… very important that I perfect it…"

"Can you make us one?" Red asked. "I think it'll be really good."

Platinum silently made her way towards the kitchen and began to work. Within an hour, she was able to bake an excellent looking pie big enough for the three other Dex Holders to eat. She wasn't in the mood to eat anything, so she was going to pass.

By the time the pie was complete, White had already set up the dinner table, so the heiress simply placed the pie in the center of the table. Red cut off a slice and put it on Platinum's plate first. He then distributed the pie slices to Sapphire and White before taking a slice himself.

Sapphire took a small bite of the pie slice. Platinum watched her reactions carefully. Sapphire slowly munched on the pie, but her expression was really bright, as if she was enjoying it.

"Hey, this is really good," she said after swallowing. "You know, you looked really nervous so I kind of doubted it at first, but it's amazing. You did really well!" She soon took a bigger bite. "Mm… I don't think I ever had anything quite like this before."

Red gave his slice a try as well. He too, nodded approvingly. "This is delicious, Platinum. Great job."

Platinum finally managed to crack a small smile. Hearing her seniors' compliments really… felt good. It felt like too long since she heard something nice.

"Lady Platinum, this is amazing," White said with a smile of her own. "Why don't you try it yourself?"

Platinum finally looked down at her own slice. She let out a short sigh before tasting her own creation. Unlike the others, however, she frowned as she focused on the taste and her memories. While the pie was delicious, it… wasn't like the pie from her memories. It was very different. In fact, it felt as if she took a step backwards in the pursuit of her goal. Even though everyone was watching, she couldn't help it. She swallowed and collapsed onto her chair.

"Oh, this isn't it either!" she cried out in a mix of a sob and a whimper. She buried her face into her hands and started to tremble as she fought the urge to cry.

"Hey, are you okay?" Sapphire asked, sounding quite surprised at her reactions.

"What's wrong?" Red asked.

"This is wrong… this…" Platinum mumbled out as she shook her head. "I have to get it right… I have to…"

"Whatever you're aiming for, I'm sure you'll get it," Sapphire said in an effort to calm her down. "Don't give up."

Platinum steadily calmed down. With a distracted look in her eyes, she moved towards the kitchen and started to make another pie.

"I must get it right…" she mumbled out, as if something in her mind had been detached. "I must get it right…"

The other Dex Holders tried to calm her down and get her to explain what was happening, but the heiress didn't pay attention to them. Her mind was focused on the pie and nothing more. She didn't even notice when the other Dex Holders wished her good luck as they left. She still focused on the pie, even if she lost her sanity. And she felt she was about to go insane. All she could think of was baking pies…

Next day, April 29, 5 am…

Platinum took out yet another small pie from the oven, being extra careful this time. She had band-aids on three of her fingers, and she didn't want to put one on a fourth finger. There had been a few accidents during her mindless baking spree. She had accidentally cut herself while cutting the necessary fruit ingredients, and she had burned herself twice while taking pies out of the oven. The injuries were very painful, but she still focused on the pies.

She doubted that the pie was successful, however. With perfect efficiency from having to set up countless times recently, she prepared to bake another pie with one hand while she tasted the current pie with the other.

Platinum bit into the pie and soon completely froze. Her mind suddenly snapped into full focus on the flavor in her mouth and her memories. … No way. This… was it. She did it…

Platinum's heart started to race. She quickly set up for a new pie, but followed the exact steps at the previous one. But this time, in a bigger scale. When the pie finished half an hour later, she was beyond overjoyed to find out that it tasted exactly like the pie Diamond had made for her in the past.

"I – I did it…" she muttered, suddenly feeling extremely light headed. "I did it!" She stared at the pie on the table and dropped to her knees as she started to cry. These were tears of joy, however. The joy of finally accomplishing her goal and the joy of thinking that Diamond would finally accept her.

When she finished crying, she felt a wave of fatigue. Severe fatigue, from having spent so much time endlessly baking pies. She decided that she would take a nap. She felt happy, having completed the pie successfully, so she had no qualms about taking some time to rest up for the first time in days. She would bake the pie for Diamond the moment she woke up. She would then take it straight to Diamond's hotel room and give it to him. And there, he would accept her sincerity, and she would be the happiest girl in the world…

Several hours later…

Platinum stood outside Diamond's hotel room. Her legs were wobbling. Her heart was racing. She was so nervous and anxious… Before taking a nap, she was certain that Diamond would accept her sincerity. But now, she was filled with doubt. What if Diamond rejected the pie? What if he was upset at her for mimicking his recipe? What if…

The girl shook her head. No. Diamond would accept her. He had to. If he didn't…

She shook her head again. She had to think positive. She had to. There were no other alternatives… The heiress held her breath, knocked on the door, and held the dish with the pie behind her.

'Please Diamond… Please accept my sincerity… please…'

Inside, Diamond snapped out of his thoughts when he heard a gentle knock on the door. He peeked through the peephole and spotted Platinum with her head down a little. She looked so afraid… so nervous… it hurt him so much to see her like this.

Diamond took a few deep breaths to prepare himself. His heart told him to abort his plans again. But he had to do this… for Platinum's greater happiness in the long run. What would happen, if a few years from now, the girl found out that he had a crush on her since the very beginning? And that she was so oblivious to it, that she told him that she had a crush on someone else? Diamond was going to spare her the pain and turmoil of that incident by forcing her to go to Pearl and leave him be.

He opened the door and tried his best to have a cold expression on his face. The heiress didn't look at him yet, as she was afraid to make eye contact. She had her hands behind her, as if she was hiding something from him.

"What do you want?" he asked, purposely sounding cold. He sounded too cold, even to him. Platinum seemed to think so too, as she visibly flinched.

Platinum slowly revealed what she was hiding. It was a large plate with an opaque cover to hide its contents. Her hands were trembling just a little.

"What's this?" Diamond asked, having a sinking feeling what was coming next.

Platinum flinched at his cold words again. She took a shaky breath. "A… long time ago… you once told me that just eating something tasty can make a person happier…" She suddenly looked really hurt and… so sad. "Since… since you have been quite upset for the past several days and… you will not tell me why… I – I hope you will accept this… cheer up, and… return to being the sweet and kind Diamond you used to be…"

Diamond felt pain from his chest, as if his heart had just stabbed itself. Just hearing her words… just seeing her expression was killing him from the inside. Diamond somehow managed to retain his cold expression and took the plate from Platinum. As he did so, he noticed the band-aids on three of the girl's delicate fingers. Whatever she had made, it obviously took her several attempts and she had a few accidents. 'Several attempts' was probably an understatement.

Diamond lifted the cover off the plate and saw a nicely baked pie. A cream pie. And by the looks of it, it appeared to be the exact same kind he had made for her during her Super Contest attempt. … How did she make this? He had never taught her that recipe. Or any recipe. And Platinum had no experience in cooking. There was no way she could've succeeded in baking this pie. Unless… she spent all day for the past few days… … Could it be?

Diamond looked at Platinum and saw that she was anxiously waiting for his response, with her hands pressed against her heart. She seemed… afraid of his response, however. She was sincerely hoping that he would like the pie and accept her sincerity, but was afraid that he wouldn't. … He wanted to accept her… so badly… but doing so would undo all of his previous efforts and eventually, Platinum would be stuck between him and Pearl. … Platinum was in love with Pearl. And as such, Diamond would push her towards him, for her own happiness… eventually.

"How… how did you learn this recipe?" he asked, his voice shaking. His voice was shaking because he was so deeply touched by Platinum's sincerity, but it would've sounded as if he was so angry that he couldn't talk properly.

"I – I remembered the taste of the pie y – you once made for me, a – and I… recreated it," Platinum stammered out. She was visibly shaking now, as she realized that her attempt at cheering up her close friend had failed once again. She had poured her heart and soul into the pie… and again, she had failed…

"So you stole my recipe," Diamond said, trying really hard to sound upset. He saw the tears welling in Platinum's eyes and quickly looked away. He knew that he would break if he saw her cry… 'Damn it Lady… Please just give up on me. Go to Pearl… be happy with him…' He looked down at the plate. If he just… threw it down on the ground in anger, Platinum would surely run off to Pearl within the hour. But… he just couldn't do it. Doing that would crush the girl too much, and he couldn't bring himself to do it.

He could also hit her directly. But again, that would hurt her way too much. It would be most effective, however. If he severely hurt her feelings, she would run to Pearl within the hour, thereby ending this whole thing quickly and sparing herself and Diamond the extended emotional hell. But if he didn't hurt her enough, she would stay around him for longer, trying and failing to cheer him up, which would hurt both of them more. But damn it, Diamond just didn't have it in him to brutally hurt her feelings any more than right now.

He snapped out of his thoughts when he heard Platinum sobbing. He mentally groaned as he felt the severe blow to his heart.

"I – I'm so sorry…" Platinum whimpered out as she looked down in shame. "I – I thought… you would like it…" She suddenly peeled off one half of the band-aid on one of her fingers. Diamond looked and saw a large red mark, undoubtedly a painful burn caused from taking the pie out of the oven. "I – I put a lot of effort… … I thought you would appreciate it…" Platinum suddenly shook her head as she was about to completely break down into tears and cry her heart out. "… Sorry…" She started to run away, as she couldn't take it anymore. Diamond instinctively reached out to stop her, but forced his hand back just in time.

With tears blurring his vision, he looked down at the pie. … It looked great. And it tasted amazing, as he found out. Since Platinum was very inexperienced at cooking, he could only imagine the amount of effort she had poured into this pie. She had poured her heart into it… and he had just brutally stomped on it…

Diamond slowly closed the door and sat down by the dinner table. He stared at the pie on the table and berated himself for being such a bastard.

But at least… at least Platinum would be going towards Pearl now…

Unfortunately, he was wrong. After crying her heart out for hours on her bed, Platinum returned to his hotel room later that day. And again, she had knocked on his door and he reluctantly opened it. He felt like breaking into tears just from seeing her expression. She looked so horrible, so heartbroken, that he almost let out a sob. But the girl didn't seem to notice, as she was way too distressed. He turned away so that she wouldn't be able to see his expression.

"… Diamond… may I talk to you?" Platinum asked very quietly, as if she had no energy at all.

Diamond groaned inside. Why was Platinum so stubborn? Why couldn't she just leave him and go be with Pearl? … Of course, the answer was simple. He was one of her only friends. The girl had been lonely for most of her life, and as such, she held onto her two friends as hard as she could. Even in situations like this.

"… Please… it is very important…" Platinum mumbled as she felt that Diamond wasn't going to respond to her. She couldn't hide the fact that her friend had hurt her so badly that she was losing her mind.

"What is it?" Diamond asked with a sigh as he finally turned to look at her. 'Lady… please. Please just give up on me and go to Pearl… Please…'

Platinum started to tremble as tears welled in her eyes once more. "… Why… why are you being so mean to me?" she asked in a whimper. "I – I thought you were my friend… You are one of my only friends and you were so nice to me. But… you started to be mean to me and… it's as if you deeply hate me. Did I… hurt you by accident? If I did, I'm really sorry, Diamond… Please… Please, Diamond. Please return to being the sweet boy you used to be…"

Diamond didn't say anything, as he had no idea what to say. He simply turned away again, as he was about to break down into tears and he couldn't let Platinum see that.

Platinum looked down at the floor in shame as tears rolled down her cheeks. "I – I don't want to lose you… I don't know what I did to offend you, but I'm really sorry. Can you please forgive me?"

"No," Diamond mumbled out. 'Because you haven't done anything wrong…' "Just… go away and leave me alone." He clenched his eyes shut and pinched himself in his pockets as hard as he could as he said his next statement. "I… don't want to see you again."

"No… no…" Platinum stammered out as she started to hyperventilate. "Diamond… Diamond? … Please… please tell me that this is all a bad joke… … Please Diamond… You… you're my closest friend…"

Diamond slowly closed the door. He couldn't take it anymore. He simply walked away from the door. Platinum trembled violently as she pressed herself against the door.

"Diamond… … Diamond…" She begged for him to return, but… no. Her vision blurred and everything around her seemed to spin around. She felt dizzy. Very dizzy. Her legs were wobbling so much, she couldn't stand. She collapsed to her knees and put her hands on her temples. She frantically shook her head, trying to make everything clear, trying to just… understand what she did wrong that caused all this. But no matter how hard she tried, her vision didn't clear. She still didn't know what she did wrong. But she must have done something terrible for all this…

Platinum soon scrambled up to her feet and staggered back towards her hotel room. … Diamond was gone, despite her best efforts. He hated her. He hurt her. And he wanted her to go away. So she would. She would go away and leave him alone as he wished.

From inside, Diamond looked through the peephole again. He could see Platinum slowly heading back to her hotel room. Now that she was gone, he let himself cry. Finally, the heiress couldn't take it anymore and left him alone. Hopefully, she would leave him alone from now on and just be happy with Pearl. Eventually, she would forget about him and all the misery he caused. He'd still be miserable, but at least she'd be happy. That was all that mattered…

Next day, April 30, Battle Frontier, Johto, 11 am…

Pearl headed back towards the actual Battle Frontier facility. Lately, he's been… practicing being patient. His dad made him go fishing, an activity that required an insane amount of patience. Pearl almost lost his mind, simply sitting there, waiting for an uncertainty to happen.

And now, here he was, after another failed fishing session. His pent up frustration could only be released in one method: battling. Or rather, speed battling. He was going to take the Battle Factory challenge, but create constraints on himself. Such as… only allowing 10 seconds of examining each Pokémon, and only giving himself 30 seconds to decide on what to do per battle. The results… were hilarious, at times and downright humiliating. But it did train him to think faster.

Today, he was going to take on the Battle Factory with a new constraint. Where he would only swap out once every… … Huh?

Pearl froze when he spotted Platinum walking towards him from afar. What the… What was she doing here? … Where was Diamond? Did the heiress come to find him on her own? Pearl stared at the girl in disbelief. No way. He had a sinking feeling of what happened, and he sincerely hoped that he was wrong. But seeing Platinum's absolutely crestfallen expression told him that he wasn't wrong.

Hoping that the heiress appeared so crushed for a different reason, Pearl walked up towards her. "Miss Lady, what are you doing here?"

"I – I… really need you," Platinum answered, almost in a whimper.

"What's wrong? What happened?"

Without warning, Platinum ran up to him and started to cry. She embraced him tight and buried her face into his shoulder. Pearl promptly patted her on the back.

"Diamond…" the heiress sobbed out. "He… he hates me… I did something to offend him, but he's not telling me what. He said he… doesn't want to see me again…"

Pearl let out a long, frustrated sigh. So it finally happened. That stubborn bastard… With clenched teeth, he grabbed Platinum by the shoulders and pushed away from her. She looked rather puzzled, as she didn't know what he was doing.

"Miss Lady… I know what happened," he said quietly. "… And I also know what you'll say to me eventually. You like me. You're in love with me. I've known it ever since I saved you from that pack of drunk muggers back in Sandgem."

Platinum appeared quite surprised, as she didn't expect Pearl to know of her crush.

"And Miss Lady, I'm really sorry. I know you need me right now since Dia decided to be a bastard and purposely hurt you. But this whole shit is pissing me off, and I'm going to put a stop to it. So Miss Lady, listen carefully." He looked into Platinum's eyes and noticed that she was starting to understand what was about to happen. She started to tremble and a look of utter devastation came onto her face. Pearl hardened his resolve, however. "I don't like you. I never did, and I never will," he said, only then realizing that it came out wrong. "I want you as a friend and nothing more, but if you're in love with me, that's clearly not going to happen. So Miss Lady, for your own good and mine, stay away from me."

Platinum started to frantically shake her head. "No… no, no…" she whimpered out. "Not you too… You… you hate me too? I – I thought I had friends… I… thought…" She put her hands up to her temples as her vision blurred again. The whole world was spinning once more. "E – Everyone… hates me… … Why… why? What did I do to deserve this? What…" She staggered backwards as she began to lose balance. Her legs refused to listen to her and remained wobbly. "All alone… no one likes me… I'm left all alone again…"

Without warning, the heiress started to run away. Her legs were wobbling, but she didn't care. She didn't want to be here anymore. Around Pearl. Around Diamond. She didn't want to be anywhere near them. Home. She just wanted to go home. She wanted to be with people who at least pretended to care for her.

Pearl watched her run. He knew this was going to happen. That's why he warned Diamond. But the relaxed Dex Holder must've thought that he was bluffing with his threat. He wasn't bluffing. And now, all three Sinnoh Dex Holders were in a spiral of misery.

Pearl slowly shook his head. "… Maybe I should've said "I don't love you" instead…"

And the nuke lands. Boom! Time to rebuild, from the ashes of what once used to be a base and an economy… oh wait…

I will now hear your whines or cheers about how cruel this chapter was, and how Diamond was being such a bastard. At least it can't get any worse. Like for White, it's all uphill from here for Platinum. It's a huge hill, but it's still up, damn it.

Next up? Ruby & Sapphire segment. Time to hammer that. Probably. In 2015 or something.
