Chapter 14: Godparents and Gifts
"Alice, can we come in?" Bella asked, poking her head around the door.
Without looking up, I said, "Sure, go ahead."
As Bella, Edward, Renesmee, and Emmett came into the room, Daisy-May's inquisitive gaze moved to where they stood. I followed her gaze, finding it increasingly hard to look away from my daughter.
Bella was beaming at me, "Alice, she's beautiful!"
Edward smiled too, "Congratulations."
Emmett offered me a smile, "Congrats, shortie."
"Can I hold her?! Can I?!" Renesmee asked, bouncing up and down violently.
I frowned. That couldn't be safe.
"Maybe Bella should hold her first." Jasper suggested. That was better, but still...
It had taken Jasper twenty minutes to convince me to let even him hold her. The thought of letting Bella hold Daisy freaked me out. Maybe I was feeling slightly overprotective.
Jasper kissed my cheek, "She'll be safe with Bella. Bella brought up Renesmee, remember?"
I let Bella take Daisy from my arms, never taking my eyes off of her. Bella cooed down at her, "Hi Daisy-May. Aren't you just the cutest thing?"
"Can I hold her?" Edward asked, trying to catch my eye. Reading my worried thoughts, he added, "It's okay. You know I'll keep her safe."
I nod and Bella carefully transfers Daisy over to Edward. Edward smiled down at his niece, "Her thoughts are quite funny."
"What's she thinking?" I asked.
"She's thinking that my hair is weird." Edward admitted. I laugh softly.
Edward holds her for a while before handing her over to Emmett, with my permission of course. Emmett smiles at Daisy-May but I can see the sadness in his eyes. He wishes it were his and Rosalie's daughter. He wishes Rosalie was here at all.
I was getting more trusting in my family as Daisy was passed between Esme and Carlisle. Renesmee looked up at me with hopeful eyes, but she was still bouncing around. I consider, "Come and sit on the bed with me."
Renesmee does as she's told and I carefully place Daisy in her arms, helping Renesmee support her. Nessie was beaming in delight, looking down at the baby with pride, "My cousin. We're going to be best friends. Practically sisters."
I laugh softly, "I'm sure you will be."
"We're very proud of you, Alice." Carlisle told me from where he was stood, arm around Esme's waist. My whole family was smiling at me, Jasper's face standing out the brightest amongst the rest.
He was going to be an amazing Dad - I could tell by the way he looked at Daisy. His protective watch over her, the adoration in his eyes. Whether I'd be a good Mom or not...well, we'd see. Rosalie's words still stuck with me. You're going to be a rubbish mother! Would I be? I looked down at Daisy, and I knew.
I might not know the first thing about babies or parenting. I might be highly irresponsible and too quirky for my own good. I might even be crazy. But looking at my daughter, I knew that I would do everything to make her life nothing less than perfect. And how could I be a better mother than that?
~o.O.o~
"Do you think we'll ever grow tired of watching her sleep?" Jasper asked as we both gazed down at the baby sleeping in my arms. Her thumb was in her mouth as she peacefully slept.
"I doubt it." I said with a smile. "Who do you think she looks more like?"
"Are you joking? She's gorgeous. It's all you." Jasper said. I glanced up at him with a smile.
"I love you, Jazz." I told him.
"I love you too, Ali." He said.
We look back at Daisy-May, neither of us needed to express our love for her. There was too much.
"I suppose we should think of godparents." Jasper said.
"We aren't exactly religious." I pointed out.
"I know," Jasper said, "But it feels right for her to have godparents."
I nod, "Aren't girls supposed to have two godmothers and one godfather?"
"Traditionally, yes." Jasper says in agreement.
"How about Dana?" I ask, "Without her, this wouldn't have been possible."
"She'd make a perfect godmother." Jasper said, nodding. "I'd like Carlisle to be godfather."
I smile; I'd been thinking the same thing. "Me too."
"And as the other godmother?" Jasper asked.
I consider for a moment, "Rosalie. When she comes back, of course."
Jasper frowned, "Alice-"
"She'll come back. I know she will." I said, "I want her to be godmother."
"But why Rosalie? She was horrible to you when you were pregnant." Jasper reasoned.
"She was upset - and rightly." I defended, "What she did was wrong, but I can't blame her. I want her to be part of Daisy's life. I want her to feel like she's part of Daisy's life."
Jasper nodded, "Okay. We have our godparents then."
We both looked down as Daisy-May stirred and made a gurgling sound before returning to her deep sleep. I smiled, "She was worth waiting for."
Jasper nodded in agreement.
"Now comes the hard part." I said. Jasper looked at me in question, "Being parents."
"You're going to be an amazing Mom." He told me, kissing my temple.
I gave him a doubtful look, "I hope so. Either way, she'll have you. I know you'll be a great Dad."
"You're just saying that because I said you'd be a good Mom." Jasper accused, poking me in the side.
"Am not!" I protested, "I mean it! Your so responsible and serious, as well as being fun and loving. You've been able to control me for almost a century, I'm sure you can manage a daughter!"
Jasper smiled, "As long as she doesn't take after you in the shopping department."
I gave him a look, "What's wrong with my shopping?"
"Nothing...nothing at all." He said, throwing me a wink. I roll my eyes and look back at Daisy-May.
"Don't listen to him, he's just a smelly boy. We can go shopping every day if you like!" I told her.
"Please God don't let her want to go shopping every day." Jasper said, placing his hand over his face in mock despair.
I elbowed him in the ribs and stuck my tongue out, "Don't be such a spoil sport."
"You two are too cute!" Bella said from the doorway. We both looked up in surprise; neither of us had heard her approaching. Clearly, we'd been too wrapped up in our new bundle of joy to be aware of anyone other than her.
~o.O.o~
A week had passed since the birth of our beautiful Daisy-May. Parenthood so far had been...interesting.
In fact, it was nothing like any of us had ever experienced. Of course, there had been some experience with human babies; Carlisle at the hospital, Jasper with his sister's children, Esme with her baby before it tragically died. And we'd all been here for Renesmee's early childhood. Daisy, however, was a different matter.
Right after she was born, it was as if she was an angel. She didn't cry or scream, she just continuously smiled and made cute little baby noises. We'd just started to believe we were the luckiest parents in the world to have such a quiet baby, when it happened. The second day of Daisy-May's beautiful life on earth, and the illusion was shattered.
Any time we put her down she screamed until we picked her up again. She cried if anyone but me or Jasper held her. We tried feeding her a huge variety of things, but the only things she'd eat were liquidized gummy bears or lion blood. She'd turned into a complete handful, and none of us really knew how to cope with it.
I was still sleeping, and would be for another month or so according to Dana, so Jasper was on his own at nights. I always woke up when Daisy cried in the night, but he'd just tell me to go back to sleep and went to sooth her by himself. I tried to make up for it by doing most of the work during the day, but motherhood was so exhausting. We'd thought that we'd been prepared, but we really, really hadn't.
Carlisle said that Daisy's behaviour was probably due to vampire instincts, which had taken a day to kick in. She was very young and vulnerable, and her instincts were telling her not to trust other vampires. Of course, she had complete trust in Jasper and I, because she recognised us as her parents, her protectors. Whenever we put her down in her crib, or handed her to someone else, she felt vulnerable and unsafe. It made sense, but it wasn't half annoying.
Despite the challenges faced in the last week, we found that our love for our daughter grew each day - something we hadn't thought could have been possible. We both knew that this was just the start, and that is would only get harder from here, but we also both knew that our love would keep growing.
"You should be asleep." Jasper said as he sat down beside me.
"Me or her?" I asked, looking down at Daisy who was snuggled in my arms.
"Both." He said. He handed me a plate and a bottle. The bottle was full of gummy bears that had been blended up with milk. A strange concoction, but something that Daisy loved. On the plate were normal gummy bears, something that I loved and would certainly miss when I lost all traces of my human form in a month or so.
I hold the bottle to Daisy's lips and she sips eagerly. My hands occupied, Jasper feeds me gummy bears and makes me laugh when he tries one himself and pulls a horrified face. Emmett walked in and Daisy instantly bristled. She stopped drinking and turned to face him with wide amber eyes.
She watched him carefully as he crossed the room and sat down right next to me. His face was blank and vacant, and he was clutching something to his chest. It only took me a moment to realize that it was Rosalie's shoe.
"Emmett, what are you doing?" I asked.
"I just found this under the bed." He said, his tone flat and empty. He looked up at me with blank eyes, "Where is she, Alice?"
"I wish I could tell you." I said truthfully, "My gifts are still dimmed whilst I'm in this semi-human form, and I can't see Rosalie's future."
Emmett's face didn't change, "I just wish I could see her. Even if she didn't talk to me, even if she just stood there and glared at me. I just wish I could look at her."
Then Daisy-May did the strangest thing. She reached out of laid her little palm flat on Emmett's huge arm. Usually she'd try and stay as far away from vampires as possible, but now she was voluntarily touching one.
Emmett's face suddenly lit up, "Rosalie!"
I looked around the room, trying to find my sister, but she wasn't there. Emmett jumped across the room, but then his smile faded, "Where did she go?"
Daisy made a tutting sound and held her hand towards Emmett. He sat back down beside us, "I saw her...I did. She was right there, leaning in the doorway smiling at me!"
Daisy touched him once again and his smile reappeared, "There! There she is!"
When he moved, his smile once again vanished and was replaced with a confused look, "Why does she keep disappearing?"
Daisy was now squirming in my arms, seemingly trying to get to Emmett. We all stared at her. Was is possible that she was making Emmett see Rosalie? She was reaching her arms up to him as if she wanted him to pick her up. He crossed to her cautiously and lifted her into his arms. She smiled up at him and his face formed into a smile to match.
"She's showing me Rosie! I can see her!" Emmett's eyes glazed over as he stared at the sofa, "I...I can see myself too, sat next to her! We're playing checkers...she's letting me win...wait, I remember this! This happened last spring, this actually happened!"
Jasper and I looked at each other. "She can access memories?"
I frowned, "My gift is seeing the future...maybe she can see the past?"
"And she can project those images onto someone, like Renesmee can?" Jasper suggested.
"It's different." Emmett said, not taking his eyes from the sofa, as if transfixed, "I can't just see it in my mind, I can actually see it happening in front of me."
"So she can make people see things?" I asked, looking at my daughter, "That's amazing. She has a gift! Two gifts!"
I'd been proud before. I'd been proud each time Jasper resisted human blood. I'd been proud when Renesmee learnt to ride her bike. I'd been proud when Carlisle got a promotion at work. This was something new though. I was feeling such immense pride in that moment, knowing that my daughter was so talented, that at just a week old she had so much potential. When I looked at Jasper I saw that he held the same look of pride on his face.
Emmett was beaming, "Thank you, Daisy-May, beautiful girl. You showed me my Rosie again."
He kissed Daisy's forehead and she smiled happily. After that day she trusted Emmett, and no longer cried when he picked her up or tensed up when he entered a room. It wouldn't be long before the rest of our family gained her trust too. In fact, it wouldn't be long at all.
Heeeyy again :) How'd you liked the first of Daisy-May's gifts? She is gunna have more gifts, but you'll have to wait until later in the story to find those out ;) Thanks to everyone who gave me suggestions for gifts she could have...if anyone has any more ideas for gifts she could have, leave them in a review or PM me! :)
