Chapter 29. Embarrassing Aunts and Needy Mothers
Over the next few weeks, Rosalie managed to convinced us that she really was staying. She spent a lot of her time with Emmett, because apparently they had "catching up" to do, but she also made an effort to spend time with me. She painted my nails at least twice a week, trying out new patterns and colours, and she kept taking me on secret shopping trips (secret because if Alice found out she'd be mad we didn't take her along). She had a nicer car than Alice - but I'd never tell Alice that I thought so - and so Rose took me out in it and we drove around at three times the speed limit. I loved Bella, but she'd never do anything like this with me. Rosalie was the fun aunt I'd never had.
Today, Rosalie was driving me to school. We'd been in this town for almost four years now, so everyone else was in senior year, which meant they all had to go to the high school across town. As Rosalie wasn't going to school, she'd volunteered to drive me. Rosalie drove into the parking lot and stopped the car. She looked at her watch, "We're early. Wanna chill in the car for a while?"
"Okay." I said, and we talked for a while. Rose and I talked a lot because she liked hearing stories about me growing up, and I liked hearing stories about the Cullens before I was born.
I was looking down at my nails - which that day were painted white with little cherries on them - and when I looked up I almost shrieked, ducking down in the car so no one could see me.
Rosalie gave me an odd look, "What are you doing?"
"That's Max." I told her, vaguely gesturing across the lot.
"That guy from the party?" Rosalie asked, her eyes sweeping the lot to find him.
"Uh-huh." I said.
"Why are you hiding?" Rosalie asked.
I peek over the side of the car, "I don't wanna talk to him!"
"Don't be a wuss." Rosalie said. She opened my car door and I practically fell out onto the hard ground.
"Hey!" I protested. Rosalie shut the car door behind me.
"HEY MAX!" Rosalie yelled. I froze as Max turned around and saw me sprawled on the floor.
"Rosalie!" I screamed, trying to get back in the car.
"Have fun!" Rose said as she drove away. I turned around and saw that Max was coming right towards me.
"Hey, uh..." He began.
"Daisy." I said, mortified that he didn't even remember my name. I was going to kill Rosalie for this, I really was.
"No, I know." He said quickly, "I was just going to ask who that was?"
"Rosalie." I said with a frown, "My sister. She...moved out a few years ago and now she's back."
Max grinned, "She knew my name; that means you've been talking about me."
"That's not true." I argued, "There's any number of reasons why she might know your name."
"Such as...?" Max asked.
"She might know you're brother." I said.
"But she only just moved to town." Max countered.
"She could have spoken to you but you were too drunk to remember." I suggested.
"I've never been drunk." Max told me.
"She might be really good at guessing names?" I said weakly.
Max laughed, "You're ridiculous." I didn't say anything, "So why was I summoned over here?"
"Rosalie thinks she's funny." I told him.
He looked down at his watch, "School's about to start. Wanna walk in together?"
"Sure." I said, as casually as possible because a boy had never asked me to walk with him before. Except for Emmett, but ew.
First bell rang as we were walking up the steps to the front door, perfect timing. We walked until we arrived at a fork in the corridor, "I'm in block E."
"S block." I told him. That meant we had to go opposite ways.
"Okay, well, we should hang out sometime." He said.
I stared at him without saying anything for too long, then said, "Yeah. Cool."
Then I turned and walked away too fast. I didn't go straight to homeroom, even though I only had a few minutes to get there before second bell. Instead I went to the girls bathroom and called Rosalie.
She picked up almost straight away, "How dead am I?"
"He said we should hang out sometime!" I whisper-screamed into the phone, "Rosalie, he wants to hang out with me sometime!"
"Of course he does, you're gorgeous." Rosalie told me. I felt like squealing louder than Alice when she spots a new gorgeous pair of Jimmy Choos. But I don't, because I'm in the school bathroom and there could well be someone in one of the stalls.
"What do I do?" I asked her.
"Don't do anything." She said, "Play it cool. He said you should hang out sometime, so wait for him to ask you to hang out."
I bite my lip, "When will that be?"
I can practically feel her eye roll from down the line, "Daisy, cool it, okay? He's obviously into you, just let nature take it's course."
I hesitate, "Okay..."
"Shouldn't you be in class?" Rosalie said, a split second before second bell went.
"Yeah..." I said.
"Go! I don't wanna get in trouble with Jasper." Rosalie said with a laugh.
"Fine." I said, "Bye Rose!"
I left with a smile on my face and headed to homeroom, knowing that my teacher wouldn't care that I was late. There were advantages to having the last name Cullen (Even if, technically, on my birth certificate, my name was Daisy-May Whitlock Cullen, which was too much of a mouthful).
Sure enough, he didn't say a word as I slipped in late, and I sat through homeroom in a happy daze. And most of first, second, and third period. Then at lunch time I saw him across the cafeteria and caught his gaze and it made me go all giggly and fluttery.
What the heck was wrong with me?!
"Love!" Rosalie cried when I told her later, "Love is what's wrong with you!"
"I do not love Max." I protested.
"Yes you do! Daisy and Max sitting in a tree, K-I-S-S-" She stopped as I tackled her to the ground and put my hand over her mouth.
"Shut up, no I don't!" I cried.
She laughed and peeled me off of her, "Okay, okay! But you do like him."
"Maybe..." I said, avoiding her gaze.
"This is so exciting! Your first crush!" Rosalie said, clapping her hands together.
I rest my head in my hands, wondering why I'd ever told her about this in the first place, "Please don't make a big thing out of this."
"I won't!" Rosalie said, raising her hands as if in surrender, "But if he asks you out, I want to be the first to know."
I rolled my eyes, "He won't." Rosalie just stared at me, "Fine! You'll be the first to know!"
Then Alice came through the front door, kissing me on the cheek as she skipped past me, "Hey baby girl."
"I'm taller than you." I told her in protest to the 'baby girl'.
Alice pouted, "It's not fair that you got Jazz's height. And you'll always be my baby girl."
"Whatever." I said, rolling my eyes.
"I'm going to the mall, wanna come?" Alice asked, directing the question at both Rosalie and me.
"Sure." We say, almost in unison.
We take Alice's car and get to the mall in record time. Alice makes a beeline straight for the shoe store, and I'm not far behind.
"You know," Rosalie said, "Last time I was in this mall, I was trying to wrestle a pink baby dress out of your Mom's arms."
I look at Alice, who's practically drooling over a pair of sparkly pink high heels, "I don't doubt that for a second."
We shop for a while, collecting shiny bag after shiny bag full of clothes, shoes, purses, and accessories. Then Rosalie takes me to the food court to eat whilst Alice continues shopping. I'm halfway through a burrito when I see Max on the other side of the room. I put down my burrito and try to look anywhere but at him, not wanting Rosalie to know he's there and embarrass me again.
Then I see that he's noticed me and he's started walking over. I panic, not wanting him to come over when Rosalie's sat right next to me.
"I gotta pee." I said suddenly, standing up and walking away before Rosalie can protest. I cross paths with Max and he smiles.
"Hey Daisy." He said.
"Hey." I say, smiling back.
"I wanted to talk to you about earlier." He said.
"Earlier?" I asked, trying to act what Alice called nonchalant by leaning casually on one hip and twiddling my hair around my finger. Then I realised he was looking at me funny so I dropped the hair and stood up straight, "What about earlier?"
"Well I said we should hang out some time, and it kinda looked like you freaked out a bit." Max said.
"Oh. Uh..." I look to the side and then back at Max, "Did it?"
He laughed, "You're adorable." I blushed, "It was kinda a jerk move, leading you on like that but not actually asking you out. I guess I was...nervous. You're too pretty for your own good, Daisy-May. Anyway, I guess what I'm trying to ask you is if you want to go out with me sometime...on a date...if you want to."
I laugh, "Now who's adorable?"
"So?" He said, frowning at being called adorable.
"I'd love to." I told him.
"Good." Max said, "Tomorrow after school? We could get pizza, watch a movie maybe?"
"That sounds cool." I said.
He smiled, the same lopsided grin he'd been wearing the first time I saw him, "I'll see you tomorrow then."
"See ya." I said as he walked away. I turn back to Rosalie, who's been listening to the whole exchange, with my mouth open in a silent squeal. I walked back to the table and sat down, the same expression on my face, "Oh. My. God."
Rosalie squeals for me, "Did you just get asked out on your first ever date?" I couldn't even speak. "Okay, now we really do need to shop."
~o.O.o~
We'd returned home with bags piled into the car up to our necks. Jazz and Emmett came outside and helped us unpack. It was late by this point, so I ate and went to bed.
The next day seemed to drag on forever, my classes boring me. Even my friends couldn't make the time speed up for me. I was counting down the seconds until the end of school. Until my first ever date.
Then it finally came; the last bell of the day.
I practically leap out of my chair, pushing all my stuff into my backpack and racing from the room. I wait for Max on the steps outside of school. He only takes a few minutes to show up.
"Ready to go?" He asked. I nodded, and we started walking down the steps. As we reach the bottom, a canary yellow Porsche screeches to a stop right in front of us.
Alice rolled down the window, "Daisy-May, get in this car at once." She said it with a glare, but then she turned to Max with a smile on her face, "She'll just need an hour to get ready."
"I am ready." I said, looking down at my outfit, which was pretty cute.
Alice ignored me, "Why don't you just meet her at the movie theatre?"
"Uhh...sure." Max said.
"Alice-" I began.
"Don't you argue with me." She cut me off, "Get in the car."
I shrug at Max and mumble an apology, before slipping into the passenger seat of Alice's car. She quickly pulls away. She doesn't say anything for a few minutes, so I speak, "How did you know?"
"Edward heard Rosalie thinking about it." Alice said. She turned to look at me, her expression hurt, "I don't know why you didn't tell me." I shrugged, "I don't know why you told Rosalie instead of me."
Now she looked really hurt.
"Well, Rosalie was there...and she heard him ask.." I said, which was true, except I'd already been talking to Rosalie about Max.
"I'm your Mom, Daisy." Alice said, "You could have told me."
How could I explain to her that dating was something I'd rather talk about with my fun aunt and not my mother without hurting her feelings? Alice was playing the needy mother, wanting to know everything.
"I'm sorry." I said.
Suddenly, Alice was smiling again, "Well, it doesn't matter now. I caught you in time, so now I can still help you get ready for your first date."
Oh dear God what is she going to do to me?
A/N: Hi! So I know this was kinda another filler chapter, but I wrote out the chapter and then realised that something I'd written needed to happen later in the story instead of in this chapter, so I had to re-write some of the chapter and it turned out kinda filler...but anyway, I hope you liked it!
Thanks for all the reviews to the last chapter. Of course, anyone who reviews this chapter gets a sneak peak of the next one.
So, by this point I've had about a billion reviews asking if Rosalie is going to get pregnant, and I can't take it anymore, so I'm just going to tell you all! Yes, she will get pregnant at some point. Please, be patient ;) Sorry for the spoiler for those of you who didn't want to know, but I couldn't take any more reviews asking! ;)
