Chronicle of Heroes Chapter 6
Author's Note
There are no words to describe how useless I've been as an author I mean it has nearly been a year since I updated god how useless is that but anyway thanks for reviewing my story and I hope you enjoy this chapter even though it doesn't make up for the nearly a year's break I took however please, please read and review.

I Kill My Best Friend

I was tired, and not just in the sense that my feet were literary killing me (I mean seriously they were throbbing so hard it was like my feet had become pumps, constantly pumping pain through my body). I was also tired of my life, I mean honestly I always wanted powers, especially when I was a kid and I was on the run from the authorities… I wanted the power to travel to a universe where nearly everyone I loved didn't die…. But now that I had powers I wanted them gone. I could already feel my rage building and I could already feel myself changing, turning me into someone I barely recognized. I looked to my right and I saw Percy his eyes locked in deep concentration but just beneath that and I noticed a sadness in them, he looked like a soldier, one that had seen battle and death and was just waiting for his own. I looked to my left and even without trying I already noticed something different about Summer she was like me right after everyone I loved died, only difference is she hasn't invented a false bravado to mask the pain and worry…yet. I needed to break the ice because if I kept concentrating on all the pain that I've experienced in my life then I might break down. I looked at Percy and said to him "so you seriously can't remember anything about us or about who you think you were", "no" he answered" I can't remember anything at all". I looked at him and said "maybe if I hit you in the back of the head". "You'd break your hand" said Percy in a warm way. Summer looked towards the horizon and said "we should probable get something to eat soon". My stomach grumbled "yeah we should because my stomach's rumbling like a wrestler" I joked. "Max that was one of the stupidest jokes I've heard in my entire life" said Summer lovingly. I smiled at her and then I stepped in a puddle. "My life sucks" I said exasperated.
After we stopped for food Summer said to us "we need to find a car or something we can't keep walking around aimlessly". "Summer we don't even know where we are going so a car won't help much" said Percy, "yeah but at least we won't be walking around tiring ourselves out" said Summer. I stopped listening after that because I began to notice something, my arm was twitching and my body was getting a feeling like something was coming, something that made a part of me happy. "Guys we need to go, like right now, some thing's coming". Percy stopped for a second and I swear a mist was rolling of him and then he said to Summer "he's right some thing's coming and it's big, really big". Summer nodded and we ran forward. We got to the Brooklyn Bridge moments later but Percy kept saying he was still sensing the things that were coming. The voice in my head started laughing and said "there is no escaping them; they'll just keep coming back". I snarled and said "we'll have to stand our ground because whatever is coming isn't stopping". Percy agreed and brandished his sword. Summer turned and then whatever was coming for us just stopped. I looked at my hand, it had stopped shaking and the part of me that was happy had been silenced. Percy looked at Summer and I and then said "they're gone; whatever was chasing us is gone". I smiled but only for a moment because I had to answer the bigger question why?
When we entered Manhattan Percy winced. I asked him "dude what's wrong" but he couldn't answer like all his concentration was going into not passing out. He suddenly lost balance and fell to the ground "we need to get him out of here" shouted Summer "before the episode overwhelms him" I grabbed his legs and Summer grabbed his arms and together we lifted him off the ground (he was heavy). Now I know it must have seemed very weird to the people of Manhattan to see to teenagers carrying another teenager as he shook like he was just about to have an epileptic fit but honestly we didn't care. We kept walking with Percy and Percy kept wincing and mumbling incoherently suddenly his eyes flew open and Percy said "Please put me down". We put him down and I asked him "dude what the hell happened" but he didn't answer he just looked towards the Empire State building and said "let's go". We nodded and walked away from Manhattan we kept walking and Percy said he would go to Grand Central to see of anyone there new where Crescent Hill was. I watched him walk away and as I did I saw a man glare at me and Summer. He had dark black hair, a long beard, stormy blue eyes, was very buff and was wearing a suit the colour of the sky. And for some reason he had a largge cylinder strapped to his black. I nudged Summer and pointed at the mysterious guy. She whispered to me "I know I saw him" and then just as a truck drove past him he disappeared. "I think we should go" Summer said. I nodded and bumped into a guy wearing an orange shirt who had a goatee wispy hair on his hands and rasta cap, "sorry" he practically bleated and as he ran away I saw his jeans lift and I swear I thought I saw brown goat fur. I shook my head and continued to walk forward before I felt a cold breath on my neck and instinctively I turned around and I saw a guy in all black, the same guy from my dream. The guy who would end the world. I couldn't make out his face because he was wearing a hood but I swear I could see him smiling. "C'mon Max let's go find Percy" shouted Summer and I nodded because this place was starting to freak me out.
I was thinking about the voice in my head and what it had called me, a Shadow Walker. What the heck is a Shadow Walker? When we saw Percy he was outside a shop called Sweet America and we called him. As Percy ran forward I noticed that Grand Central Station looked trash with a hole in the shop Sweet America as if someone had been thrown through it. Percy arrived in front and he looked shaken and pale. I looked at the side of shirt and saw a giant slash mark like something had well tried to slash him in half and his shirt was filled with claw marks but as always his skin didn't appear to have any marks. "Percy" Summer asked before Percy said "we need to leave now". We all nodded and together we ran outside of Grand Central Station.
We where still running and by the time my hand started shaking again and I stopped Percy and Summer looked at me and said "Max let's go NOW" but I had started going into a deep trance when suddenly I heard a rumbling. Like something big was coming. "Guys" I warned and Percy and Summer said in unison "we know we feel it". Percy uncapped his awesome pen-sword and Summer and me took out the staffs we took from the weapons room from bags when suddenly an energy current of pure concussive force knocked us of our feet and sent as sailing 25 metres into the air and I thought this is a stupid way to die and I imagined my gravestone: Maximus Cain Died Age 15 "He was a delinquent adolescent who was an annoyance and burden to everyone around him" When suddenly I felt Percy's muscular arms rap around me and then help me glide to the bottom. When we touched the ground I turned around to see a huge monster literally made out of storm clouds it was about twenty five feet tall, had a giant spear made out of lightning and it looked at us like we were ants. I raised my curved sword, Percy raised his bronze blade and Summer lifted her staff. The monster drew closer and taunted us "I am Atmos The Great I was summoned by my master to end your pathetic existence and although I'm infinitely powerful my master is even more powerful than I for he is the one and only reincarnation of the spirit of absolute darkness" I almost lost balance when he said those words because I was honestly terrified of this guy but knowing there was someone out there infinitely more dangerous than this guy made me want to shit my pants but luckily no one noticed. "Dude we get it your powerful, your masters even more powerful can we please just skip the entire I am the most dangerous thing you'll ever have the pleasure of meeting speech so I can just kick your ass" shouted Percy. The giant smiled and said "Arrogant aren't you little one but this is no mere speech you shall not beat me I'm the embodiment of-" "Cockiness apparently if you are going to kill us please do because I would rather die than fight the henchmen of some third rate villain I've never even heard of" interrupted Percy. The monster glared at Percy and then clenched it's giant fist and attacked us. I rolled out of the way and Percy grabbed Summer just as the monsters fist slammed into the ground creating a ripple that broke the earth around him. I got up slightly disorientated and saw Percy jump an impossible length of a hundred meters and landed in a place where Summer could be safe and then jumped onto the monsters back and stabbed it with his blade. The monster screamed and tried to grab Percy but he simply jumped away from its clawing hands. Percy ran towards me then lifted me clean off the ground and then he leaped yet another impossible distance of 100 meters and put me out of harm's way. "Dude what the hell are you doing, let me help" I shouted at Percy. "No" he said "I can't let you fight you're untrained and I can't have the only people I care for who I remember dying so if the battle goes south run, take Summer and run go back to the 21st Nome and tell them what happened". And then Percy rushed into battle with the monster and while I couldn't hear him I could easily imagine him taunting him. The monster growled and attacked Percy but Percy was too fast and dodged. Percy then jumped upwards and then did a front flip and brought his blade down onto the monster's neck decapitating it. The monster fell but didn't disintegrate like the other ones we fought in the 21st Nome Percy looked at it mysteriously just as he saw it regenerate and saw it's head grow back. Percy jumped back startled. As the monster rose again but Percy didn't seem to care and then dashed towards it and stabbed it again right in it's leg the monster howled ad fell to one knee and the Percy rushed forwards and stabbed it right into the heart. The monster screamed louder than before as arcs of electricity formed around it and sent Percy hurtling metres away with a giant hole in his shirt. The monster smiled and I tried to move to save Percy but I was petrified as if someone was holding me back not allowing me to move and I felt that same cold breeze in my neck and I turned to see the guy in the black hood.I shouted at him and said "let me go I have to save him, I have to save Percy" "Just let him die" the guy in the hood said "after all everything dies and it's better this than what I have planned because if you see what I'm going to do you'll thank me for letting this monster end him because I won't just kill him because how boring is that, anyone can kill someone Max even you, it takes real skill to make someone suffer to watch them break physically, emotionally and mentally and that's what I want to do I want to rip apart his world so that by the time I am through with him he will be begging for me to end it but I won't, no, I will bask in his agony and then let him relive it again and again and again, lifetime after lifetime after lifetime" "You're sick" I spat at him angrily. "No" he said "I am an artist, and darkness is my muse I paint it everywhere, spread it everywhere, I live for it, I breath for it and I EXIST because of it, you, your fellow heroes and gods are nothing more than toys that I play with for my pleasure do not think you are anything beyond that because you aren't the only reason you are still standing here is because I want you to watch your friend die". I turned to face Percy for the first time since this guy started talking he was struggling and I saw Summer trying to move to help Percy but every time she did Percy would ward her away or lift her and put her back in a safe spot. I tried to run but the guy in the black hood stopped me and I saw Percy glare at the monster and shout "MAW" and gallons of water appeared around him and he sent it towards the monster and let it cocoon it and then force the water to shrink around him and the monster was instantly crushed into powder. Percy then made the water explode sending the monsters essence everywhere. The guy in the hood behind me smiled and said "I'll be seeing you Max" and then let go of me and disappeared.
"You guys can come out now" shouted Percy at the top of his voice. Summer and I ran to him too stunned for words and we said together "thank you for saving our lives" and then without any formal warning Summer slapped Percy right across the face at the same time I punched him right across the face and it heart like HELL. I screamed in agony and held my hand as I felt it pulse with pain and I could see Summer clutching her hand as she winced in pain. "What the hell was that for" Percy said indignantly. "For being a colossal ass" I said "and for being a giant douche" Summer added on. "Dude you can't just put us in the corner every time a fight starts" I shouted at him. "We get that you were protecting us and we are grateful but you can't go around being so sacrificing every time a fight starts because if you died protecting us we couldn't live with ourselves, I need you in my life Percy….. ummm I mean we need you in our life" said Summer. "I'm sorry next time we'll fight as a team" said Percy. "Thank you" Summer said still clutching her hand in pain as I said "I think I broke my hand". "Yeah so did I" muttered Summer.
Hours later we where still wandering around and Summer and I started arguing about where we were going to go. After a brief but heated argument filled with comments like "I am going to die of exhaustion before we get to this place, if it even exists" and retorts like "it exists I just have no clue how to get to it". I go annoyed and said "I'm gonna go take a walk I'll be back"(and yes I said it like Arnold Schwarzenegger from Terminator). I only walked a few metres when I heard the voices again "the Shadow Walker will lead us into an age of absolute destruction". "The Shadow Walker will create an age of carnage". "The Shadow Walker will make the world a living blood bath". The Shadow Walker will end humanity". I closed my and covered my ears and I ignored them but they kept getting louder and began to overwhelm me. I lost my balance and fell to the ground and when my entire scene changed. I was in my past, the day my parents died, it was my birthday I saw young me running towards my old home. I remember walking into the house and then blacking out and then waking up with my parents savagely murdered. I kept walking forward following the young me in hopes of stopping the killer. I entered the house and so the young version of me get knocked out I turned to face the killer and I almost lost my balance it was the man in the black hood. My anger grew and I tried to stop him. He killed my parents he ruined my life and I will rip his face off. I ran towards him but he looked at me and said "tsk tsk Max you can't change fate". I steeped back surprised he could notice me when I was like this. "I suggest you look away Max this is gonna be terrible". I tried to punch him in the face but he stopped me and said "turn away Max". I refused but then he shouted "turn away Max" and I felt my head turn 180 and my neck snap. I fell to the ground and then I heard the police cars. They came barging into the house and saw young me covered in blood with a knife in my hand also covered in there blood. I was set up by the man in the black hood I realised he ruined my life and I would kill him. I saw the young me get taken by the police and the vision ended. I opened my eyes and felt the air fill with power so I turned to see Summer entering a trance as she stopped walking and stared into space her eyes completely glossed over and she stayed that way for nearly ten minutes. "Summer" Percy and I said worryingly as she started to twitch erratically and sweat and wince and then she suddenly shouted "Thoth". "What?" Percy and I said confused. "We need to go to Memphis to visit Thoth" Summer said panting. "Um Memphis is in Egypt" I said. "No there's one in America and I know where it is" We nodded at her as she concentrated and suddenly a giant fire blazed around us and came together to form a three meter long Phoenix. Percy and I exchanged looks that both said "whoa". "Get on" said Summer he face pale "we don't have all the time in the world".
Riding a giant phoenix was as awesome as it sounds the phoenix was so warm that the cold around us didn't affect us at all and the beating of it's wings was amazingly soothing and before I knew it my eyes where closing and I was going into a deep sleep and of course with sleep came dreams. I was in a cavern, and I was watching Percy shirtless afloat and trapped in a bubble and just by seeing that I vomited because Percy was cut and maimed and bleeding so much I was amazed he was alive but I knew he was because he was screaming "kill me, please kill me I have nothing left, end it PLEEEAASE" but it didn't end and I watched my only friend get tortured by a teen in a blue shirt and black jeans. "Please kill me, please kill me" he begged his voice hoarse from screaming. "You would like that wouldn't you" said a voice that sounded suspiciously familiar. "But I don't think so" the teen said and suddenly Percy disappeared and then came back worse than before. "I want to DIE" Percy begged but the teen said "as long as you are in that bubble you can't, you will live forever, in absolute agony". I walked forward towards the teen and I saw the guy in the dark hood hidden in the shadows next to him instructing the teen to torture Percy and smiling in the most sadistic manner possible. I wanted to punch the teen but when I saw his face I stopped because it was me. I was the one torturing Percy. The teen then turned to the guy in the black hood and then as if receiving orders let the bubble around Percy pop and finally Percy was given the sweet release of death he craved. Then just as suddenly as the bubble popped other ones formed in one there was a guy with blond hair and a small scar on his lip and in the other there was the missing magician Carter Kane. They where both as banged up as Percy and simply looking at them made me hurl again. They both begged for death and then the bubble popped and the two of them died and then another bubble formed and it was Percy and he was worse than when he died moments ago. He was screaming worse than before and pleading for death and I saw the guy in the hood whisper in future me's ear and Percy's bubble popped and the endless cycle of torture and death began anew. I was completely horrified and I vomited more food than my body was holding. All the while I was crying and trying to will myself to another place but I couldn't I was trapped here to watch Percy, Carter and the blond get tortured until a violent jerk woke me up and when I opened my eyes I was falling down the throat of a giant monster larger than the empire state building. I screamed as the realization hit men and I saw Summer her face had a huge gash through it as Percy held her close to him. What happened when I passed out I thought. I heard Percy whimper "Typhon" as he held onto Summer as we fell down the monsters oesophagus but frankly put my dream scared me more than the situation we where in(being swallowed by a giant monster named Typhon) because it made me realise one horrible ugly truth the man in the black hood was going to make me kill my best friend.
