Hey guys! I'm baaaackkkk! And I wrote three chapters in a row for you guys on the plane. Just btw. :)
Thanks for being so patient. I'll post another chapter again later today or tomorrow!
HAPPY SUMMER
Bethany's POV:
My heart pounded like it would break through my chest. My breathing sped up and I started to sweat from nervousness. The room seemed to get even hotter and my cheeks started to flush. I remembered the pain from the last time I had confronted Klarion.
My first instinct was to make up some excuse to Dick and Artemis and then rush out into the hallway and confront Klarion myself. I was about to tell Dick that I had to go to the restroom when I realized that I didn't have to do that anymore.
"Dick," my voice barely a whisper. My heart was pounding so hard. What was Klarion doing here again?! AGAIN.
"Yeah?" Dick leaned over to hear me.
"Klarion. He's back!" Next to me, Dick visibly tensed up and he whispered furiously back.
"Get out. Now."
It felt like the room was getting hotter. Whether it was Klarion's doing or just my own nervousness. It didn't matter. Klarion had clearly threatened me. If I didn't come out to talk, then he would hurt the school.
Well, then I'd come out to play.
I grabbed Dick's arm, dragging him out of his seat. I started heading towards the door when Artemis ended up grabbing Dick's other arm.
"What are you guys doing?!" She hissed. She motioned to the teacher, who had his back to us, writing on the whiteboard.
I wanted to tell her to come with us, but she didn't know that Robin was Dick. Of course, Dick and I both knew Artemis was Artemis. I didn't have time to argue about secret identities so I ended up doing what I was best at: lying.
"We need to go to the bathroom," I spat out, whilst still trying to tug Dick with me. By now part of the class was glancing back at us to see what was going on.
"Together?" Artemis raised an eyebrow. She still kept a firm grip on Dick's other arm.
"Yeah we have an... Impromptu make out session to get to," Dick said, playing along. He winked at Artemis, although his face looked a little grim. I was blushing so hard, but I didn't really care at the moment.
"Ew! Okay!" She immediately released his arm, shaking her head.
Dick tugged me to the door, but not before I told Artemis quickly, "I'll text you."
She nodded like she understood that this was probably more than just a make out session.
"Come on!" Dick urged me. My hand was in his and we ran together through the hallways back down to the first floor. We skipped stairs all the way to the bottom. As we ran, I filled him in on how Klarion had threatened the school by sticking led into the girls arm.
"Where are we going?!" I asked when I realized we were back in the sophomore hallway.
"To my locker!" Dick said quickly and continued to tug me through the maze of hallways.
"What? No! We have to go to Klarion and take him down! We have to evacuate the school and -" I tried to tug my hand out of his grasp but his hand was like iron.
"I have some stuff there that will help us. Just trust me." He squeezed my hand, giving me strength.
His hand in mine held so many promises. He promised to keep me safe. I remembered what happened the last time Klarion was at the school and it made my chest burn at the memory of all the pain. But this time, I wouldn't be alone. I had Robin with me. He would protect me if I couldn't protect myself.
We arrived at his locker and spun the dial a couple of times. He leaned a little closer to the bottom of he locker where there was what seemed to be a little shiny and smooth sequin. Like a small camera lense.
"What are you doing?" We didn't have time to mess around!
"My locker is a little more secure than the rest. I have our stuff in here."
The locker popped open and he pulled out an unmarked duffel bag. He grabbed my hand and slammed the locker shut. I heard the sounds of locks moving into place as we dashed away.
"What was that all about? And what stuff? What's our plan!" My heart was racing and my head was spinning. We didn't have a plan. Klarion was gonna kill everyone here. He was gonna kill me. He was gonna kill Artemis and Dick. Everything was spiraling out of control. Nothing was in our favor.
"It was a facial recognition camera. Batman made me install it for my locker for safety precautions. I keep more than just textbooks in there."
Before I could ask what he meant, he pulled me into an empty men's bathroom and threw the duffel onto the sink. He unzipped it and tugged out my Huntress costume and his Robin costume. Under all of that, I could see Artemis' costume peeking out from behind a bunch of weapons. He had a whole armory in his locker.
"Oh. That stuff. You had a whole arsenal in your locker?! And you didn't think to tell me?"
"Get changed. Now," he ordered me as he threw my clothes at me. I could tell Dick was tense. He didn't want to take any more chances. He was being extra cautious and uptight. I hadn't seen this side of him before. He actually seemed scared.
We changed right next to each other. Back to back, providing a little privacy. We finished in a couple of seconds and he tossed our phones into the duffel and threw our uniforms into the trash.
"Woah! I need that uniform!" It sounded stupid, but he just threw away a really expensive uniform. Two of them.
"Bruce will get you another set. That's not really our problem right now," Dick pulled out two extendable staffs, handed me one and clipped his own to his utility belt. I did the same. He passed me a comms unit and then put in his own. I put mine into my ear, making sure it wouldn't fall out. He pulled out a bunch of other weapons that I'd practiced fighting with and we both grabbed the ones that we preferred. I already had a couple of knives in my boots, my utility belt with a bunch of stuff in there, and a mini handheld crossbow gun strapped to my arm. Batman started making me stop using my actual guns saying "we don't kill." But it was already a lot of weaponry. When Dick handed me yet another mini crossbow gun, I had to stop him.
"Dick I have enough weapons," I put out a hand to stop him.
He pushed my hand away and clipped it onto my other arm strap for me saying, "We need as much support as we can. Klarion is a very powerful villain and he has magic. We don't even have powers. I think it's time that you call in Artemis. I'll call in the rest of the Team. We don't want what happened last time to happen again."
I agreed. I whipped out my phone from the duffel and tapped in a message to Artemis.
Bethany: Klarion is back. Meet at harbor. Had to pull Dick to safety.
I covered up for the abrupt leave from history class. Didn't need to fight over secret identities right now. I looked over at Dick and he was punching something into his wrist computer. I reached over and tousled up his hair a little, making him fully look like Robin.
He looked up, confused at first, but looked into the he mirror and said, "Thanks." And then went back to typing stuff in his wrist computer.
My phone buzzed in my hand.
Artemis My Bitch 👹: on my way. Don't get hurt please. Not like last time.
My stomach churned at the memory.
"Do we need to give her costume to her?" I asked, pointing to her costume in the now empty duffel.
"No," he waved me away and continued to type on his wrist computer, "She should have her own. It was you that I knew didn't have it. The one in the bag is a backup in case she didn't have it."
That made sense I guess. I looked over at his glowing screen and made out the image of his Robin symbol blinking red. Was he signaling that we were in trouble? Before I could ask, he minimized the window and it shrunk back into his wrist.
"Okay. Let's go," he grabbed my hand and pulled me back to the door. Before we left, I tossed my phone onto the counter, but then heard a cracking noise.
"Whoops. Dick, I think I ..." I started, the guilt weighing in my stomach.
"I'll buy you another one," he didn't even turn around to see the shattered glass all over the counter, "We've got bigger problems."
He stopped and I turned back around from the bathroom to see why he had stopped.
Klarion was waiting outside the bathroom for us, a sinister smile playing on his lips.
Robin immediately moved in front of me, shielding me from Klarion.
"Look who finally came out to play," Klarion's eyes glimmered in the hallway light. His voice sounded like nails scraping against a chalkboard. No one was in the hallway. It was just us against him.
"Klarion, what do you want? We don't want to fight," Robin said calmly. I was surprised at how calm he sounded. I was shaking in my combat boots. My bones were rattling and my stomach seemed to be reliving the torture he had put me through.
"I just want to have a little fun," Klarion pouted. His snake like eyes slid over to me and his smile broadened, "Hi, Sweetie. You should have listened the first time I tried to talk to you. Remember? At the warehouse with all your stupid little friends."
My fists clenched. Oh I was sooo gonna punch him in his -
"What do you want with her?" Robin demanded. He stepped even more in front of me in a more protective stance.
Klarion's eyes narrowed on Robin and then looked between us, "Oh wouldn't you like to know. Teekl, what do you think we should do with them?"
That was the first time I noticed the little orange cat with snake eyes. Teekl slithered around Klarion's feet looking like he wanted to pounce.
"Oh I agree, Teekl. They have been very naughty lately. We should do something about it," He looked back up at us and pointed a crooked finger at Robin, "You -"
Before Klarion could finish his threat, Robin threw a bunch of smoke pellets right at the cat. Smoke erupted around us, masking my vision of anything. I felt Dick's familiar gloved hand grab my hand and tug me further down the hallway.
"Run! We don't have much time!" I heard him call to me over his shoulder.
We ran fast down the hallway, eventually leaving the cloud of smoke that surrounded Klarion.
"We could have taken him out!" I yelled back over the noise of cursing from Klarion. Robin dragged me toward a door labelled 'Exit.'
"No. He wouldn't have stayed out for long. We need to regroup with Artemis," we burst through the doors and were met with bright sunlight. We ran towards the entrance to the school, "When we get to the harbor, we will face off with him together. When Artemis gets here, two of us will distract Klarion while the other will target the cat. The cat is the key."
"What makes the cat so important?" By now, we had run outside of the school. Robin took a detour and turned into a corner of the school where the dumpsters sat. There were several black ones, a couple large light green ones and then a smaller red and another smaller dark green one. I assumed the large dumpsters were for trash and recycling.
"Didn't you do your homework?" Dick asked as he fumbled around on the side of the red dumpster.
"Not really. Whenever Captain Atom assigns those research homeworks, I sometimes forget." I stood on guard, ready if Klarion was going to pop out and attack us.
"The cat is Klarion's link to this world. If we can get rid of the cat, we get rid of Klarion," Dick told me as he seemed to lean over another camera for facial recognition and then typed in a couple digits into a hidden keypad.
"What are we doing here? We're wasting time!"
Suddenly, the side of the red dumpster lifted up and inside was a mini garage with one of Robin's motorcycle sitting in there.
"Oh," was all I could say.
"Get on. And take a helmet," he motioned to one of the full red helmets with a shield in the front to cover the eyes. He grabbed one and then got onto the motorcycle. I grabbed one, put it on, and got on after him.
"Put your arms around me and hold on tight. Don't let go," his voice came through the helmet in an earpiece.
I put my arms around his stomach and squeezed telling him I was ready. He placed a hand on mine and shifted it so it was even tighter. Then he took off through the garage-dumpster. Behind me, the door closed and went back to looking like an ordinary red dumpster. Before I knew it, we were already zooming along the busy streets of Gotham, headed towards the Harbor.
"Well, he even had his own garage and he didn't think to tell me that either," I mumbled to myself.
"I can hear you," he said.
Well shit.
"Good for you, Boy Wonder," I played it off. But I still had so many questions. I continued to ask questions, trying to find the hole or the flaws in his plan.
"What about Artemis? At this rate, we will get there way before she will."
"Remember that small green dumpster next to mine? Yeah, she has her own motorcycle, too," Dick swerved through traffic.
"What? But... You..." I sputtered, "How come I don't get a motorcycle with a dumpster for a garage and facial recognition on my locker and all that stuff!"
Dick laughed in my ear, "Don't worry, Princess. You'll get your stuff soon."
I blushed at the nickname.
"How do you know Artemis took her bike yet?" I asked to take my mind off of the anxiety I was experiencing.
"My wrist computer notified me when she took her bike. She left about five minutes ago."
"And what about Klarion? How will he know where we are?"
"Oh don't worry about that. He'll know. Just like how he tracked you the first time."
"And what about the Team? Are they going to be coming?" I gasped when he had to veer around a car that almost crashed into us. I squeezed my arms tighter around him, feeling his muscles shift underneath them.
"KF would be able to come join us, but he's on a mission with the Flash. Aqualad is in Atlantis. That just leaves Superboy and Miss Martian, and they're in a totally different city. They won't be able to make it soon, but they will try to come," he sped over some train tracks, making the whole bike fly into the air. I pressed the side of my head against his back, thinking that the closer I was to him, the safer I'd be.
"What about-" I started.
"Stop asking questions. We have a plan. I'm in charge whenever Aqualad isn't available. Just trust me," he grabbed my hand that was splayed around his abs and squeezed it comfortingly.
"Use both hands. I already feel like we're gonna crash when you use both hands."
He let out a sinister laugh and then sped up even faster making me yelp. I was pretty sure we were going fifty miles over the speed limit.
Suddenly, I smelled fire. And then a flash of red and orange nicked my arm making a burning sensation crawl up my arm. I smelled burning material.
"Ahh!" I yelled. My sleeve got burned. Luckily the damage wasn't as bad as it would have been because of my fireproof sleeves on my shirt.
"What?!" Robin yelled.
I looked behind me and what I saw made my stomach drop.
Sorry for the cliffhanger but it's fun :)
I'll update in
Stay traught.
