Bethany's POV:
"How did she know?!" Robin yelled. His voice boomed around the cave.
We had met up with the rest of the Team at the Cave after the fight. We were standing on the glowing platform in the main training room. Everyone had been forced to stop whatever it was that they were doing and meet at the cave under a Code Black meeting. Those never happened. We were semicircled around Robin, who was pacing in front of us. He had relayed what had happened to the rest of the Team. Now everyone was cowering away from Robin as he yelled.
"How did she know who we were?!" He demanded, slamming a fist down on the digital computer keyboard making it crack and then disappear into thin air. I had never seen Robin so angry before. Not even when he had yelled at me for confronting Klarion alone. Robin, the cool and collected one. Robin, the one that loved to laugh and tease. And here he was before me. He was a totally different person.
Robin was absolutely furious. The expression on his face was completely murderous.
"Calm down, Robin. We need to figure this out. You can't think straight when you're angry," Aqualad put a hand on Robin's shoulder, stopping him from his pacing.
Robin glared at Aqualad and smacked his hand away. Aqualad took a surprised step back, the rest of the Team was just as shocked.
"She knows who I am. She knows who Batman is. Don't you understand how dangerous this is?!"
"I understand," Aqualad said calmly, "And I am trying to help you figure out how."
There was a long pause and a silent conversation between Robin and Aqualad occurred. Then Robin's shoulders dropped and he looked down at the ground. He took a deep breath and then moved to stand next to Aqualad.
"Sorry," He said, his voice was softer, "I'm just... Let's just figure this out."
"Okay, tell me about this Blaze girl," Aqualad turned toward Artemis and I.
"She was pretty young to be working with Klarion," Artemis tapped her chin.
"But she was all the more lethal," I joined in, "It took us a lot of effort just to knock her out for a few minutes. And then she came back and all the wounds that we had inflicted on her were healed."
"She had some sort of fire power," Robin came to stand next to me. He was so close, I could feel his body heat, "She was powerful."
"And she seemed to be our age," I relayed.
"She seemed like a really slutty bitch," Artemis grumbled.
here was a pause as we all looked at her. Wally held back a laugh. Artemis looked up.
"Oh, did I say that out loud?"
"But most importantly," Robin ignored her comment, "She seemed to know us."
"Like how she knew your names?" Aqualad asked.
"More than that. She seemed familiar. Like she knew us," Robin had his eyebrows scrunched together. I could almost see the gears in his head working like clockwork. He had been given a puzzle and he was determined to solve it. I admired him for that.
"What if she didn't actually figure out your identities," Aqualad said slowly.
My head whipped to him, "What do you mean?"
"What if someone told her," He crossed his arms, looking at all of us, "She couldn't have figured it out on her own. Even WE don't know Robin's true identity. How could she have simply figured it out."
"She couldn't have," Robin stated confidently.
"Exactly. Which means that someone told her," Aqualad was studying each of us, weighing our reactions.
"What? You mean we have a traitor?" I asked, confused.
"Yes," Aqualad leveled his stare at me.
"On the Team?" I glanced around the others nervously.
"Not necessarily," Aqualad said simply.
I shuffled my feet nervously. I didn't like the idea of being betrayed.
Wally stepped forward, "I can help you figure out who it is."
Artemis looked at him, "What? You're the dumb one. You can't do anything."
Wally feigned being hurt, "I'm the science guy, remember? I'm good at this stuff," He turned back to the three of us, "It would have to be someone relatively new that you met."
Artemis blinked, "No it wouldn't. What does that even have to do with this?"
"Because if it was someone that you've known a while ago, then they would have confronted you guys a while ago. No, it has to be someone new that you've met. Is there anyone new that you can suspect?"
Robin, Artemis, and I thought about it. Before we could answer, Wally continued.
"It would also have to be someone going to your school. I know you guys all go to the same school," Wally walked over to me and put an arm around my neck. I thought of it as just a friendly gesture.
I thought about it. I only had a few friends at school. Artemis, Dick, Barbara, and Rose. Artemis and Dick were out of the picture, but what about Barbara and Rose? Barbara has known Dick since they were kids. So... Rose?
"They need to be close to you, so they would notice all your weird behaviors. Like when you leave early to go on a mission or if you are unavailable out of school," Wally continued, looking at me.
Could it be Rose? All those descriptions fit her.
"It would have to be someone who just found out Robin and Artemis' identities," Wally said. Now most of the Team was looking at me.
Rose didn't know anything. I was sure of it. She was too sweet of a girl. I knew it in my gut that she was innocent in all of this. But who would have just found out Robin and Artemis' identities? I know I just found out that Robin was Dick.
Why was everyone looking at me?
"Bethany, what do you think?" Robin asked me. They were all staring at me, as if waiting for an answer.
I thought about it. It wasn't Rose or Barbara. So I didn't know.
"I don't know," I said looking at the floor nervously.
"Only one person comes to mind," Robin said, not taking his eyes off of me.
"Yeah, me too," Artemis agreed. Everyone was still looking at me, as if waiting. Aqualad was studying me.
Why was everyone looking at me?
Did they think that...
What? Did they think it was me?!
Someone new. Someone that went to Gotham Academy. Someone who was close to them. Someone who recently found out about Robin and Artemis' identity.
They were describing me! That's why they all kept looking at me.
My face heated and suddenly I started shaking angrily. I threw off Wally's arm from around my neck.
"Seriously, guys?! Wow. You guys... I don't even know... Oh my God!" I walked through the group and they parted to let me through. I headed towards my old room, fuming.
"What?" Robin asked, confused.
I stopped and turned around to face off with all of them, "You guys think...! You guys think that it's me! Ha! Wow, so much for having a new family here!" I yelled.
All of their faces were blank. Even M'gann looked all innocent and confused. Oh, so now they were just gonna try and play it off. Fuck them.
"Bethany, what-" Robin tried to approach me with his arms open.
I put up a hand, silencing him. I had opened my mouth, and now I couldn't stop the rest of it from coming out, "How could I have even considered you guys my family?! You guys don't trust me! I thought we were friends! And now you're accusing me of being a traitor?!" I stormed out of the room before anyone could say anything.
I'm not a traitor. I know it. But I swear, I will find out who it is. And then I'll leave this fucked up place. How could I have actually thought that I would fit in here? Right when they had suspicions, they pointed at me. How could they?
All these thoughts crashed around in my mind like a whirlwind. I couldn't even stop the tears that were streaming down my face. I was running to my old room, just like I had done all those other times back when I had my devil mom. I would run to safety in my room. And then I'd plan an escape. And just like back at my old house, I would plan to run away from the Cave.
I shoved past the sliding doors to my old room and opened my closet. I still had a few clothes here just in case I had to stay at the Cave overnight instead of at Wayne Manor. I yanked out a pair of jeans, shorts, and black t shirts then grabbed my essentials and threw them on the bed. I only looked longingly at my bed for a split second. No. No time for crying on the bed. Not right now. Later. When I find a new place.
I unzipped my school bag, prepared to dump out the school contents and reload it with weapons when I saw it.
A note.
I could tell it was a female from the clean cursive and the carefully symmetrical letters. It was from Blaze.
East End. Midnight. Alone. Or Rose dies.
It was as if someone had poured ice water down my back. I was shaking and I felt really cold. My head started to spin and my heart was pounding too hard. That's when I realized that I was actually scared. I wasn't the fearless Huntress or smart and unmovable hero that I'd been trying to be. I was actually terrified. I didn't have any back up and I didn't have a plan. I was all alone in this. I crumpled up the note in my fist as hard as I could hold it, then threw it as hard as I could at the floor.
I considered asking for help from the Team, but then remembered that they didn't even trust me. They would think that I was tricking them or something. No. I had to go alone.
How did this note get in my backpack? It had to be when Dick and I had left the school. So Wally was right. It was someone from school. What if this was a trap? It didn't matter. I couldn't risk having Rose die. But what if Rose was Blaze? Then what? I'd have to risk it. Besides, it's not like I was going to be doing anything after this. I had already decided to leave the Cave.
I stopped packing and stood up. It was 11:30 pm. East End was all the way back in Gotham. If I hurried, I could make it there on time. I was still in my Huntress costume. I restocked on weapons and headed out of my room.
Right as I opened the door, I was met with Robin. He had his hand up, like he had been about to knock on the door. I made the mistake of making eye contact. His eyes held so many questions and I felt them searching my soul. They were so intense. I forced myself to push past him, breaking eye contact with his electric blue eyes.
"Wait! Bethany!" Robin ran after me, but I was already sprinting to the hangar, planning to take one of the Team's motorcycles. There wasn't a Zeta Tube directly at East End in Gotham, but I would zeta to Gotham with the motorcycle and then drive from there.
"Bethany! Where are you going?!" Robin cried after me. I already had the helmet on over my mask and kicked up the kick stand. Ignoring him, I rode through the cave to the zeta tubes and stood in front of it. Robin had followed.
"Bethany! There's been a misunderstanding. We don't-" Robin started, reaching out towards me.
"You don't need to cover up for what you guys thought. I don't care anymore. I have something important to get to. I need to go. Now!" I yelled hurrying. I moved to get into the zeta tube with the motorcycle, but Robin got in front of me, arms stretched out as if trying to stop me from leaving.
"Bethany wait! What's going on?"
"Robin! I swear to God if you do not get out of my freaking way right this moment I will run you down with this motorcycle. I have to go right NOW!" I revved the engine and stared barreling towards the entrance, right where Robin was standing.
He squared his shoulders and held his ground, as if challenging me to follow through with my threat. But when I didn't slow, he dove out of the way at the last second.
I entered the Zeta Tube and started to feel myself evaporate to be transported.
"WAIT! BETHANY WE DIDN'T THINK THAT-" Robin tried to run into the tube after me.
But I was already gone in a flash of light.
OOOOHHH Le Drama!
Stay traught! Until next chapter!
