Family
"Some days are just hard."
Unknown
Rick was sitting alone, looking to the sky. His face was really sad, but that was completely understandable, after all, Carl was gone for only a week. None father would be happy after that. None father should burry a son. Nobody should have to do it, actually.
- Hi, Rick. – Said Daryl approaching him. – Can I sit here?
- Sure. – Answered Rick, facing him with a tentative of a smile, because that wouldn't convince anyone. – Is something wrong?
- Well… I know that I can't really understand what you're passing through now, but… Michonne said that you don't talk about him and that you didn't even say his name anymore… - Daryl spoke nervously, looking at his own hands. – I just want you to know that I'm here, if you want to talk about Carl or… Anything. I'm here. Always. – Rick nodded.
- I know that, Daryl. – He said turning his gaze to the sky again. – I was thinking… You're my best friend. You were by my side for most of this craziness we've been living. Maybe this is not the better moment, but I have something to ask you. – Rick was so solemn, that anyone would imagine that he was about to ask him to kill somebody.
- You're not trying to propose to me, are you? – Asked Daryl, joking. At that Rick gave him a genuine smile.
- No, bud. It's not something that big. – Replied Rick still smiling. – Actually, I want you to be Judith's godfather. – That surprised Daryl more than a proposal.
- What? Me? – Inquired astonished. – Do you think that I'm a good option? I will not be a good influence on her. Please, look at me. I'm a nobody.
- That's not true, Daryl. – Rick answered, facing him, seriously. – You are a great hunter, a strong person, a warrior… and you're my best friend… My brother… You're family. I know that if something happens to me or Michonne, you're the only one that I trust to raise Judy the proper way. I know that you'll keep her safe.
- I… I don't know, Rick. – He said looking around, perplexed. That was not something that he would expect to occur in his life. He was always an outcast… A stranger in the middle of the crowd. He didn't have expected to be part of a family after his brother's death. – I don't know what to say.
- You know that if you say 'no', you'll have a lot of bad luck, right? – Daryl smiled with the corner of his mouth.
- Then I guess I can only say 'yes. – Rick agreed. – Yes, then.
- Great. – Answered Rick looking to the sun that was setting. – Thank you. That is very important for me to know that when I'm gone Judy will still have a family. – Tears started to appear in his eyes. – I… I… - Rick started to cry. – Family is very important and I already… Failed with Carl and Lori. I don't want Judy to… - Daryl put a hand on his shoulder.
- You didn't fail with them, Rick. What happened with Lori was beyond anyone of us. – He comforted his friend pressing his shoulder. – And Carl… That boy was the greatest he could be. You should be proud. You taught him right. You taught him how to be a great man and he was. – Rick cried more.
- I know, but… I miss him so much…
- I know, bud… I know… We all miss…
Daryl knows that Rick needed some time to mourn his son and he would stay there. No matter how long it took, he would be by the side of his friend… His family.
