Chapter 15
"So what are you gonna do?" Danny asked again, feeling blood pumping in his ears. They were sitting behind the car, the captive still tied securely at the backseat, knowing too well that it was in no way a good shelter. 'I'm gonna bust this thing wide open,' Nicholas' voice replied in his mind. But Nicholas wasn't there at the moment, and their chances were too uneven and…
"Razzle dazzle them," Benji replied with a faint smile. Danny's eyes widened.
"You are not gonna do the same…"
"It will win a couple of seconds," Benji interrupted. "Look, when I get their attention, you can dash to the wall to the right from you. The car parked there is not locked— don't ask me how I know that…"
"What?!" it was Danny's turn to interrupt now. He was getting even more confused than before – and he hadn't thought it was even possible. He couldn't understand which of them was supposed to protect the other, and who is Benjamin, anyway, and is Nicholas okay and why can't this just be over already.
"They might not risk killing me now, I might be the one they need— and I am actually, so…" he was mercilessly cut off by a deafening sound of a gunshot and glass shattering right behind his back. To be fair, he had been so much into plotting whatever plan that was that he almost forgot about the intruders, which, to be honest, took a long while before actually doing anything. Reluctantly, Benji risked a peek up before momentarily going back to staring in front of him.
"Try not to look at the backseat," he whispered to Danny, getting his gun out.
"Why? What's wrong about it?" Danny asked. He, too, was preparing the gun he had taken earlier from one of their attackers.
"Uh, have you seen Pulp Fiction?" Benji left the question hanging. More gunshots sounded, and more of the remaining glass shattered.
Benji knew that it was a miracle they were still alive and well under this shower of bullets. He chose a quiet moment to make his move.
"Don't shoot!" he shouted. "I think we should talk".
"Really?" one of the men yelled back. "Why would we want to talk to you?"
"I think it would be very interesting for you," Benji was barely acknowledging what he was saying, but he was glad he was still able to speak and keep up the game at all.
There was a pause, the silence of it was unbearable.
"Okay then," the answer sounded at last. "Let's talk. Show yourself. And keep your hands where I can see them".
Benji let out a sigh, handing his gun to Danny before slowly standing up and emerging from behind the car with his hands raised up. Danny just stared at him, not quite understanding what he was doing. There was another startled silence, and Danny would have laughed if he hadn't been so scared. What was Benji going to do next? Obviously, he had given him his gun because he knew he was going to be searched for weapons. Did they know Danny was there, too?
"Who the hell are you?" the man finally spoke, getting over his initial shock of seeing one too many Benjamins.
"You figure it out," Benji shrugged, his brain working so hard it felt like it could explode. He took an involuntary step back when he saw the man (Graeme Burke, his brain told him) point his gun at him in a sharp move.
Aside from Burke, there were two more people standing there: Tim Benzie and Bill Riley, who had a visibly broken nose. Benji wondered if the broken nose was his brother's doing. He really wanted it to be. He felt slight amusement that he remembered all of the gang members' names. His amusement ended abruptly with Burke's voice.
"Walk over here slowly. And your friend over there…" Benji's heart dropped.
"He won't shoot," the techie rushed to reply. Without waiting for anyone else to speak, he looked down at Danny. "Throw your gun away".
Danny swallowed and obeyed, throwing the now dead man's gun away, Benji's still clutched in his hand. He noticed Benji throw a glance at the wall he had talked about earlier. It was right near to their car, Danny could potentially roll and get behind it in one move relatively safely. And it only hit the sergeant now: Benji was turning himself in. There was no other option, Danny couldn't think of any other explanation to the other man's actions. His eyes went wide and he looked at Benji almost pleadingly, wanting desperately to be proven wrong. But Benji only nodded before starting to walk towards the group.
The agent doubted the trick with the guns was going to work. They would still demand to see and search Danny once they got over their initial shock. He only hoped Danny would hide behind that wall and possibly leave to meet the guys once it happened.
"So, what do you know," Burke was staring at him, but starting to act cocky – not a good sign. "Two Dunns. Which of you is the one we need though?"
"Depends on who you need," Benji's throat was sore, he had no idea where this was going and felt like now was the time to finally do what he used to do when he was nervous – to babble. "I might be good if you need company for a pint…" he cut himself off when he saw Burke move his gun slightly, so that now it was pointed at his leg.
"I think you just don't have enough bullets in you," Burke all but growled. "What if I give you some, to match the other version of you we met recently?"
That sentence was like a knife cut to Benji. Only the cut seemed to be inside his skull. A sharp blade slicing through his mind and flashing in his vision. He clenched his fists and gritted his teeth, trying to control his breathing. In his daze he completely forgot that whatever his brother had been through was about to start for him. Forgot about the gun pointed at him and the pain that was going to come. He just stared in front of him, not really seeing anything, not really thinking about anything and just feeling his emotions building up. The sound of a gunshot tore through the dead silence and brought him back to reality. He felt something in his chest bursting.
Danny's heart missed a beat at the words he heard. Were they going to shoot Benji? And what had that man meant by saying "to match the other version of you"? Had he meant… Some invisible hand grabbed Danny's throat and his stomach turned. At this point he wanted nothing else but to run inside the building and find Nicholas. But he couldn't, he had to sit and hide while they were going to shoot Benji. And had he said 'some bullets'? Did that mean they'd shot Nicholas… more than once? He wanted to something, anything. If only he knew what he could do… And then there was the sound that shook the sergeant from his deep thought.
