A RAINBOW PROMISE

An Inuyasha short story

Inuyasha's feet padded quickly against the forest floor and he raced towards the wolf den. His companions close behind on Kirara's back. He was silently deciding on which way to end Kōga's life when the scent of wolf was so unbearable he had to come to a halt.

"Ugh. Damn wolves."

"Inuyasha! Slow down!" Miroku called out, as they caught up to him. "Kagome is not in any danger. There's no need to rush."

"The Hell there isn't! That puny wolf will have his hands all over her."

Shippo rolled his eyes. "He's so jealous."

"What was that, fox?" Inuyasha roared, eyes dramatically large. "You got something to say?"

"Hey, I think I see the wolf den from here." Sango said, pointing over Inuyasha's head.

Ginta had been peacefully sleeping on his woven stretcher when he awoke to being lifted off the ground by his shoulder. "Wh-what the?" He yelled out and came nose to nose with his leaders most annoying foe. "Oh, it's just you, Inuyasha."

"Who else, asshole!" Inuyasha sniffed him and looked at his bandages. "Kagome was definitely here."

"Of course she was!" Hakkaku chimed in from behind them, smiling innocently. "Kōga brought her here for lunch and then they took a walk. He's really putting the moves to her today!"

Inuyasha growled and thumped him on the head. "Where'd they go? I'll kill that wolf if he touches her!"

While he interrogated Kōga's henchmen, Sango and Miroku stood at the cave entrance with matching embarrassed faces. The wolves and demons in the cave were already annoyed with the half demon who beat up all four guards on duty to infiltrate the cave. "We'll just be going now." They said to growling tribe in front of them.

Kagome and Kōga sat on a large rock, sharing a can of soda from Kagome's era. The grass was wet and shiny beneath them and the birds were chirping nearby. The rain storm was over.

"I'm surprised the rainbow is still going strong." Kagome wondered out loud, sipping her soda thoughtfully.

"Yeah, it usually lasts all day." Kōga said quietly, fidgeting with the clasp on his amour.

"Kōga? Is everything alright?" She turned to look at him, sensing his quiet manner.

"I just... don't want you to leave. I like having you here, Kagome." He rubbed the back of his head, a little shy now.

Since when is he shy? She wondered. "I like being here. It's really great."

They were quiet for a few minutes before Kagome said, "Maybe I can come back sometime?"

Kōga gasped a little. "Really? You would?"

She nodded. Provided Inuyasha doesn't kill us both, she thought.

"Promise me you'll return?"

He turned to face her and stared into her eyes. Kagome, usually shy and awkward with his advances, looked back into them. She had never noticed how blue they really were until-

"Kōga! Get your filthy paws off of her!" Inuyasha roared as he came flying down from the sky, sword drawn.

"Wha-" Kōga, surprised was knocked back onto his rear. "What are you doing here, mutt face?!"

"Inuyasha!" Kagome said in disbelief. "You came."

"I came to rescue you from this mangy wolf, Kagome!" Inuyasha got between her and Kōga and set the blade of his sword on his shoulder.

"You asshole.." Kōga sneered, jumping to his feet. "The only rescuing she needs is from you!"

"Me?"

"You're the one who left her in the forest alone and unprotected in the rain." He yelled, getting so close to his face their noses could have touched. "I would have never put Kagome in such danger."

"Feh. Don't pretend like you know anything, wolf."

"I know enough, dog boy!"

By the time Sango, Miroku, Shippo, and Kirara caught up Kagome had wedged herself in between the two demons who were still shouting insults and was trying to simmer their tempers before a real fight broke out.

"Kagome! You're okay!" Shippo yelled, perched on Miroku's shoulder.

"Yes! I'm fine. It's just these two I'm worried about."

Kōga instantly stopped yelling and took her hands in his. "You don't have to worry about me, Kagome. That pup can't hurt me."

"Why you-" Inuyasha thundered, reaching for his Tetsusaiga. "I'll show you hurt, ya fleabag."

"We should leave before they kill each other." Sango said, half sarcastically.

Miroku nodded. "Inuyasha! Sheath your sword. We will leave and continue our quest. The rain has stopped after all."

"We can leave after I cut this bastard in half!" Inuyasha yelled back.

"Inuyasha, sit!" Kagome snapped, and looked up at Kōga. "I'm just going to say goodbye." She said to her friends, without breaking eye contact with the wolf demon who stared right back at her.

They walked a little ways away while Inuyasha was still eating dirt and the others watched from afar with a close eye and a nosey ear. Kagome, now a little awkward, kicked at a rock embedded in the dirt. "I'm sorry he's so protective sometimes."

Kōga took her hands once more. "You enjoyed my company today, Kagome?"

"Yes, of course." She said, noticing his vulnerability peeking out again. "Thanks for finding me in the forest today."

He brought her hands to his chest. "Kagome. You belong to me and me alone. I will always come for you, wherever you may be. I will always protect you. I promise you that. Until my last breath."

Kagome turned a whole shade of pink and wished they were far enough that her friends didn't hear his vow. How wrong she was though, as they all watched with intense expressions. At least Inuyasha is still unconscious, she thought.

"Now go. Remember my promise to you. And remember your promise to me."

"I can't believe he let her go so easily." Sango whispered to Miroku as the group walked towards a nearby village road.

"Lets not forget, Kouga is not possessive like Inuyasha."

"He also doesn't hold a grudge either."

They watched as Inuyasha and Kagome walked ahead of them, not speaking to another. Inuyasha had his chin raised and his eyes closed; hands inside the sleeves of his fire-rat robe. Kagome kept his pace, sneaking glances at him.

"Are we going to talk, Inuyasha?" She finally asked.

"Well that depends. Are you going to apologize for running off with Kōga?" His eyes still remained closed.

"Apolog- I didn't run off with Kōga. I mean I did, but not on purpose! If you weren't being so crude I wouldn't have!"

"Feh. I don't care anyways. Do whatever the Hell you want."

"Fine." She said, biting her lip angrily. If he doesn't care then that's fine by me.

They walked in silence for a few more minutes before Inuyasha's eyes narrowed as he looked at her and quietly demanded, "So... What was your promise to him?"
