Woo, Chapter six!
What's Hellcat gonna do about Kevin?
We're gonna find out after these messages from our sponsors!
Mia-Teresa-Davenport: "You're also the only one who knows why I'm doing this, so shut up!"
"…But what about that little kid that she takes care of?"
ShyMusic: Lol, let's start the hatred bandwagon that tends to follow these stories: This time, it's Kevin.
AllAmericanSlurp: Because guessing plot twists isn't all that hard if you put effort into it. And that's the closest thing to an accurate statement about Kevin here.
DarkestKing: There's probably a spell, but show me the demon willing to touch silver just to test it.
And now, the best part! Bree?
"Zara doesn't own Lab Rats or anything you recognize. If you don't recognize it, it's probably hers."
"...And, not to pull your halo down around your neck and tug you to the ground, but I'm more than just a little curious how you're planning to go about making your amends to the dead with your halo slipping down...to choke you now."
A Perfect Circle, "The Noose"
"...No light, no light in your bright blue eyes. I never knew daylight could be so violent! A revelation in the light of day. You can't choose what stays and what fades away. And I'd do anything to make you stay..."
Florence and the Machine, "No Light, No Light"
Bree
Kevin had some kind of anxiety problem or something.
Bree first started to notice it about halfway through dinner. Kevin was explaining that he was trying to create tulips that smelled like roses in his spare time - geneticists' hobbies were very strange and, in Bree's opinion, pointless - and bouncing his leg the whole time. It was small cues like that that gave him away. He tapped his fingers on the table, or his hands shook, or he fidgeted a bit. If it wasn't one thing, it was another. It extended long past the point of him being just nervous. He even jumped once when Douglas patted his shoulders.
Other than these small things, though, he seemed okay. Very talkative and friendly, unusually kind for someone who liked Douglas, and quite intelligent, despite his strange fear of robots.
Maybe Kevin was as anxious because Leo and Chase spent the whole dinner glaring at him for some reason. Hell, Ysthry even shook her stingers at Kevin when he got too close to Leo. It was strange, to say the least. No one mentioned why, though, so Bree tried to ignore it. Chase was generally mistrustful now, and Leo had hated Marcus right off the bat, too.
He had been right about Marcus, but that wasn't the point.
Whatever the problem was, the dinner went rather well. Adam ate pretty much everything that would have been leftovers - as expected - while Mr. Davenport talked about himself between bouts of intense questioning about where Kevin lived, where he worked, his family - that was only brought up once; Kevin informed Mr. Davenport rather shortly that he and his family never talked anymore because they didn't quite approve of Kevin preferring men over women, so the topic was dropped - and everything in between.
It was almost like Mr. Davenport wanted to be able to hunt Kevin down at a moment's notice. Bree didn't know why. Kevin was a nice guy. He could probably do much, much better than Douglas, but that was beside the point. Bree liked him. If he was going to be sticking around, it was fine by her.
However, Leo and Chase didn't relax until after Kevin had left. Douglas had offered to walk Kevin the long, treacherous distance from the door to the car, prompting Mr. Davenport to turn on the sprinklers to break up whatever they were doing out there, causing Kevin to leave much faster and Douglas to storm in the house with hair that was wet and flat, vengeance flashing in his eyes. Before he could tear Mr. Davenport a new one, though, Leo cleared his throat. "Douglas? Kevin's a horrible guy."
"Look, if you and Hellcat don't like him, that's *your* problem," Douglas huffed.
Chase looked oddly reluctant to say anything when he spoke. "No, Douglas. It's not that. He was at the junkyard last night. With the Hunters that attacked us."
Oh. Poor Douglas had probably just lost his boyfriend if that was true. No wonder Chase looked like he hadn't wanted to say anything.
Douglas, interestingly enough, didn't jump immediately to Kevin's defense like most boyfriends would. He didn't look upset, either. Just very confused. He crossed his arms thoughtfully, nodding at Chase. "You still have footage of it on your hard drive?" At Chase's nod, Douglas gestured towards the Lab elevator. "Let's see it."
The trip to the Lab was uncomfortably crowded - literally everybody had hopped in the elevator, all wanting to see Chase prove that the nice, gentle man they had just met was really a demon killer - and unusually quiet. It was strange. Normally, everyone would be talking to each other. But not this time.
Bree wanted to break the silence, but she didn't. Maybe it was because of the confusion on everyone's faces. Maybe it was that Douglas had his eyes closed, like he was praying to whoever he believed in that it wasn't true. Whatever it was, she held her tongue.
Even in the Lab, everyone was quiet. Oly and Yahn weren't even squabbling amongst themselves as Chase slid a USB out of the tip of his index finger and inserted it into the cyber desk, replaying the memory for all to see.
Running. Screaming demons. Leo and Sam arguing. Guns in their faces. And - the reason everybody was down there - Kevin, his hand on a knife before he shooed them all away.
It was then that everyone finally started speaking.
"Why would he even be there?"
"But he's dating a Summoner."
"I knew there had to be something wrong with him!"
And so on. Bree herself was stunned. Kevin seemed so timid and nice. How could he possibly hurt somebody?
One person - perhaps the most important - was still silent. Douglas' eyes flashed as, with his jaw set, he silently turned and walked out of the Lab.
"I'm not calling you a liar. Just don't lie to me. I'm not calling you a thief. Just don't steal from me. I'm not calling you a ghost. Just stop haunting me. And I love you so much, I'm gonna let you kill me..."
Florence and the Machine, "I'm Not Calling You a Liar (Dragon Age 2 Soundtrack)"
"...Would you leave me if I told you what I've done? And would you need me if I told you what I've become? 'Cause it's so easy to say it to a crowd, but it's so hard, my love, to say it to you out loud..."

Kevin
Every time someone knocked on the door, Kevin jumped. It was just so *loud* compared to his usually-quiet apartment. This time was no exception. He even dropped the cup of tea he had just made. With a sigh, he dropped a kitchen towel on it to soak some of it up and set the now-cracked cup in the sink before finally going to the door and looking out the peep hole. When he saw Douglas - hair flattened by the sprinklers that had gone off in Donald's yard and hanging down - Kevin grinned, unlocking the door. He hadn't expected Douglas to visit, but if he was in the mood to cuddle and do other things, then Kevin was on board. He opened the door. "Hi, hon-"
Gun to his head.
Douglas was pressing a gun against Kevin's temple in seconds, shoving his way into the apartment and closing the door, his expression murderous. Kevin held his hands up innocently, his heart basically stopping even though it was far from his first time being held at gunpoint.
Just a guess, but Douglas probably didn't want to fool around or anything at that moment.
Damn.
"It was you," Douglas snarled, advancing so that Kevin was forced back into the living room.
"What was me?" Kevin whimpered, starting to shake. Please point your gun somewhere else, Dougie.
"I told you about Hellcat gathering demons in the junkyard!" Douglas' eyes started flashing. "You told those Hunters! It couldn't have been anyone else!"
Jesus, he figured that out fast. And the way his eyes were flashing protectively...
Now was not the time to be thinking about how sexy his boyfriend was!
"Douglas, honey, I can explain," Kevin started, moving towards Douglas a bit, feeling his cheeks redden with shame. "I didn't have a choice, and-"
"There's always a choice," Douglas hissed, interrupting. "I almost lost my kids to someone I brought into their lives before. I'll be damned if I'm letting you do the same! Those kids are why I'm still alive today, and you're not taking them away from me, even if you're my boyfriend!"
Kevin winced. He was very aware that Douglas would shoot him to protect his kids and nephew. He would be upset - Kevin could see pain and betrayal in Douglas' eyes, too - but his family came first. It was one of the many, many attractive qualities he had. "If you know, then I know you know that I let them go. I didn't want them hurt any more than you do."
It was a bit of a lie. He had only risked his life to let them go because of Douglas. Granted, he would let them go now because they seemed like wonderful people - he was sure they were nice to people that don't aim guns at them, if Adam and Bree were anything to go by - but he did let them escape.
"It was your fault that they had to escape from anything!" Douglas flicked the pistol's safety off with an audible click. "And I'm not letting it happen again."
Kevin's voice started shaking, raising an octave. "I swear, I can explain! They have me on a leash! I didn't mean to get anyone hurt!"
"Liar," Douglas hissed. "You knew damn well that they would kill everyone there!"
"I was hoping the kids were smart enough to escape when the shooting started. I was right. They did almost make it to the gate undetected."
"You're not understanding me," Douglas growled, his voice dangerously quiet. "There wouldn't have been a fucking situation if you hadn't created one."
Kevin dropped down to his knees, hoping to drum up enough sympathy to get a last request. He was going to die. There was no doubt about that anymore. But he could at least explain why he sold the demons out. It wasn't because he wanted them dead. He had no problem with demons. They always left him alone. No, it was more selfish and far more shameful. And the worst part was that it only existed because he lacked the will power and discipline to stop it. "Dougie, I know nothing will change your mind, but at least let me explain why before you shoot me. Please?" He stuck his bottom lip out in an exaggerated pout, something that he knew could sway Douglas a bit.
Douglas was silent for several seconds, obviously contemplating his options. For a split second, Kevin was sure that Douglas was just going to shoot him without listening to the explanation. In the end, though, Douglas nodded tightly. "You have thirty seconds to explain."
Biting back a slightly relieved sigh, Kevin swallowed hard. "I have a problem..."
There we go! Chapter six.
Will Douglas shoot Kevin?
What's Kevin's problem?
The fuck is going on in this story?!
We'll just have to wait.
So, until then, feel free to review. Or don't. Meh. Maybe you can vote on whether or not Kevin dies. You know I'm still going to do whatever the hell I want, but no one's stopping you. :3
And enjoy.
