Chapter 42: To Cry

Nicolette woke up at seven o'clock on the dot, and after reminding herself that she was in Haven, rolled out of bed and shuffled to her closet. She dressed herself in her white sundress with one of Max's old denim work shirts- with all of the buttons open- and white flats. After pulling her hair into a fishtail braid and placing a light coat of make up on her face Nicolette began to wake the other girls.

Twenty minutes later the girls' house was a frenzy with everyone trying to get ready at the same time.

"Why didn't you wake us earlier?" Jessica huffed.

"I told you last night that if you weren't satisfied with waking up an hour before church and having forty minutes to get ready you needed to set an alarm." Nicolette rolled her green eyes.

"Don't you roll your eyes at me!"Jessica shouted.

"Or what? Please, tell me what you will do?" Nicolette rolled her eyes again. Jessica huffed as the guys' trucks and jeeps pulled into the drive. Thirty minutes later the group was only three minutes late for church.

The first person to meet the rather large group was, surprisingly, Sarah Beth. She greeting Nicolette with a hug as Lee Anne and Tara made their way over.

"Look Nicolette, I have a confession and a bunch of apologies to make." Sarah Beth blurted, Nicolette looked over her shoulders at the students.

"Is this really the best time?" Nicolette asked.

"Yes it is. Look, I'm sorry for bullying you all your life. It isn't your fault that you are adopted, and it isn't your fault that your adoptive mom died of cancer and it isn't entirely Max's fault that I slept with him while you were in Seattle and he was here." Sarah Beth blurted, the eyebrows on all of the students raised as some of them gasped, laughed, or stood in shock.

"Excuse me?" Nicolette raised her own brows, she had put Max's cheating situation behind her after she had gotten back from his hands.

"Yeah, I seduced him while he was drunk. I'm sorry. It was defiantly not the right thing to do and I promise that I will never do it again." Sarah Beth frowned.

"You better not."

"Thank you, though. Even though I was utterly horrible to you all your life. You saved mine when you could have just let me die. Thank you." Sarah Beth hugged Nicolette once more before gliding- as best she could with a prosthetic on- back into the church.

By that time Lee Anne and Tara had joined the group.

"So, was Sarah Beth abducted by aliens while I was away?" Nicolette asked, causing laughter between the three girls as they too trudged into the church.

And after three hours of standing, sitting, singing and praying, the group made its' way back to the houses.

The students were told to change into work clothes and make their way back to the cars when done- by the one and only Lee Anne.

"FASTER YA CITY SLICKERS! YOUR HAIR IS ONLY GONNA GET MESSED UP IN A BIT ANYWAY!" Lee Anne shouted for probably the twentieth time. The girls groaned at the notation (for probably the eightieth time) and made their way into the cars. Leaving Max and Nicolette behind, only after it had been the notation that Max belonged on a hay, wheat and corn farm- and not the pig and cow farms; and that since Nicolette was the "farmer's wife" she got to stay behind to. Security hadn't gotten the memo that Nicolette was staying, and had left twelve minutes before the students did.

Not five minutes had passed when Max came onto Nicolette- who was working on chopping vegetables in the kitchen.

"Max we need to-" Max cut Nicolette off with a kiss, before picking her up and carrying her to her bedroom and dropping her on the bed. Max barely stopped kissing Nicolette through the process of getting himself out of his shirt and starting to work on Nicolette's.

"Max, you need to stop." Nicolette said, pushing Max off of her.

"Why? What's up?" Max asked all breathy like, worried that he had pushed his girl past some invisible limit.

"My dad would freak if he were here. And if he hears about this he will personally fly down here to kick your ass and drag mine back to Seattle." Nicolette huffed, pushing her shirt back in place.

"Nikks, we've done this so many times before and you are only worried about your dad now of all times. When he can't get to us in less than an hour." Max grunted, his irritation with the students was already making him stress, so he had thought that Nicolette would be able to help him de-stress, however, now that she was suddenly worried about her father's approval, he probably would have to find a new favorite way to de-stress.

"Max, the last time we got caught and he kept us from each other for a week, if I hadn't gotten depressed, he'd probably still have us apart." Nicolette huffed, why couldn't he see it her way. She was only trying to keep them together after all.

"Look, Nikks, the key word in there is probably and you need to stop worrying about your father, because frankly it is getting annoying. He's controlling your entire life." Max huffed.

"He isn't controlling me Max, I am just trying to keep us together." Nicolette defended.

"He is to controlling you! Every damn day it's 'no Max, don't kiss me in front of my dad- he doesn't like it' 'no Max, I can't drink whole milk, dad says it's bad for you'" Max mocked her voice in a way that made her sound like she was a ten year old with a too high voice.

"Max, a) I don't talk like that and b) you are getting defensive. I'm only trying to keep us together. If we get caught again who knows what my dad-" Max cut Nicolette off.

"There you go again. What my dad will do. That is exactly what you were going to say babe, he is controlling you! You need to live your own life!" Max shouted.

"I do live my own life! I just do it in a way that won't get us separated!"

"Bullshit, you're afraid that he will shoot himself to leave you too! Nikks, newsflash, it won't happen. Not every damn person in this world is trying to leave you! Get over yourself." Max hissed, Nicolette recoiled, Max felt a wave of guilt wash over him- he hadn't meant to say it like that.

"Get the hell out of here." Nicolette demanded.

"Nikks wait..."

"Don't you dare, Nikks me. Get the hell out. I don't want to see you."

"Nicolette, baby."

"OUT!" Nicolette shouted. Max nodded, he threw on his shirt and left.

And only when Nicolette heard the peel of gravel flying everywhere from the drive, did she allow herself to cry.
