A/N: Here, have another chapter!
. . .
N groaned and pushed his face into the pillow, avoiding the sunlight that had risen high enough above the headboard to shine onto his face. He felt lax, content, and swore a lot of stress has left his system. His body was able to breathe better, making him feel lighter than when he first arrived to this hill side in the middle of no where.
Soft snores captured his attention and he struggled to keep one eye open while he peeked up and over the pillow to his companion. He felt his insides twist and his heart beat faster at the sight of her. Disheveled hair, bright red lips and a small flush on her cheeks. She looked peaceful and beautiful.
But he could not dwell around here for long. His comrade is most likely fretting that he did not return home last night. With a sigh he rose from the bed, stepping with feather like steps to be as quiet as possible. He relocated his clothes with ease, all stripped, scattered and left in the living room, and slips into them with practiced moves. Before he goes for his shoes he stopped for a moment, a frown on his face.
'I think it would be rude to leave without a word, since I do not have a cellphone for her to contact me.' With a nod N quickly found a sticky note pad and a pen, writing a brief note for Touko before bringing it back to her room and placing it on the pillow for her to find when she wakes up.
He stared for a moment and is leaning down before he has a chance to think, brushing his lips against her temple, the contact bringing the hot and chilly sensation he missed last night, as well as a twisting sensation in his gut. 'Well to be honest I felt a lot of things.'
He watches her eyes flutter for a couple seconds at the contact and he jerks back swiftly, not wishing for her to wake up because if she looked at him with those big blue eyes, he did not think we would be able to leave. He made haste towards the front door, stuffing his feet into his shoes, and heading out.
His stride is nimble against the bellowing wind, kicking up dust in his wake. He ignored the stares and giggling sent his way, already use to the behavior of the brave women, as well as the heated looks guys sent his way. Men were also affected by him, and they didn't like it. When he paid no heed, then it was the women who scowled and the men who grinned. People are so fickle.
He walked for quite a bit until he finally found an area that few people hung around and dipped in between the buildings, avoiding trash cans and debris. He stopped once he turned another corner, relieved when there was no people or windows in sight. With a heavy sigh he lifts his hand to his neck, using both his index and middle finger to smooth out the flesh behind his ear until he felt a little round button.
He pressed it. There was a white flash and he's gone.
N closed his eyes from the blinding light on instinct and opened them seconds later, eyes taking in a bright room. There was a large table in the middle with only a few chairs around it, no windows and one door in the corner. The room was plain, simple, yet everything had a subtle glow.
The being at the table lifted their head to see who had decided to drop by, and smiled when their eyes landed on the very person they were looking, and waiting for.
"Natural," the voice was silk itself, smooth and comforting, security and hope all rolled into one. "I was just wondering when you were going to pop by."
"Sorry I did not stop by last night, Judex." N cringed, his own human voice sounded dull compared to the other beings'.
"I was worried for a bit. I see that you did not sleep at your original location on the map."
"I went to visit a friend."
"Ah. Well it must have been when I was not in the room because when I came back from a meeting, you were alone. I summarized that your human body has tuckered you out, because you were sitting on a couch for sometime before moving to a bedroom."
N gave a slow blink at this piece of information. 'Did they not see Touko's beacon with mine, at all?' He made sure his steps were slow, as not to alarm Judex of his sudden skittish behavior and glanced down at the map.
The map itself did not display directly into peoples homes, or show the people themselves, but instead it showed them as tiny circles. Objects were shown as modified versions of themselves and the noun.
His eyes shot to where Touko should have been sleeping, yet her circle was not there. His eyes roamed to the market and library, but did not see her anywhere.
"See anything of interest?" The being asked, watching N's expression.
"No," he murmured. "Just thinking."
"Ah. Humans do that so much, it's so... silent. Speaking of them... why are you still in your suit? I would have thought you would rid of it, like the other times, as soon as you got here. I don't even know how you can stand being in that for more than an hour." It chuckled.
N said nothing and reached for the small button behind his ear, pressing it once again. His 'skin' began to dissolve and within moments he was identical looking to the other being. They have forms similar to humans, but they stood a little taller, their skin looked as if they wore space itself, black with specs of stars twinkling in the distance. The only thing that separated them from the human term 'monster'or 'boogey-man', was the pure white wings sprouting from their shoulder blades.
He stretched his, sighing after working out the kinks before retracting and ruffling them for good measure. It felt good to release them again.
"I suppose I am more tired than I thought," N was happy that his voice was now as melodic as the others'.
"Being a human must be taking it's toll on you. Perhaps you should take a break, we are not super beings."
His first reaction was to object, but he did not need suspicion, so instead he sat down and toyed with the map, enlarging and minimizing it. "Perhaps I will, but we need to solve this case soon. It has gone on for far longer than we thought."
"That is true," Judex hummed and sat down as well. It took control of the map, using the index finger to slide it to the market place, the start of their journey. "Let us get down to business. They were suppose to pass through here two weeks ago. We had no reason to believe it could alternate the appearance so why weren't you there?"
A few weeks ago... He was at the library, spending time with Touko. Was that the day their target was going through the planned location? Had his own curiosity cost them this opportunity?
"Natural," the being spoke and leaned back in the chair, hands coming to rest on its lap."If being a human is compromising this mission, you will have to abort and we will send someone with more experience in your place. It is nothing to be ashamed of, you are still young and learning, but you will get another chance."
"No, it's not a problem."
"Then tell me," it jabbed it's finger onto the map, images blurring for a few seconds before settling on long tables and shelves. "Why were you in the library on this important day?"
"I didn't know that was going to be the day. I have been at the market for a long time and saw nothing, so I thought perhaps I would explore the area and see if I could spot the deviant somewhere else. It's a small town, I thought I would have more luck by expanding my search."
Judex sighed softly. "Yes, you are indeed still young. Over five-hundred years as a record keeper and only fifty years in training as a reaper. You are a quick learner, but even the gifted have their trials."
N said nothing, knowing he would only anger the other wiser being if he spoke out of turn. He was sure that if he was wearing his human skin, his heart would be loud enough to be heard outside of his chest, sweat would run down his face and he would play with his fingers out of nervousness. But he wasn't, so he kept cool and composed, wings flapping slightly.
"I have already spoken to some of the higher-ups about this and they have agreed to allow you to continue as you were. They are simply amazed at the fact that you can even stand to be a human for more than a day. Honestly, the skins makes me itch." It chuckled.
Yes. Being in this form was more favorable, and the human skins did feel uncomfortable, vulnerable, but being with Touko made him forget such minimal things. It surprised him that he was willing to put up with the skin just to be around her. Was his kind suppose to feel such things? Did his human feelings somehow merge with him to this body?
"I will try not to disappoint."
"All forgiven and forgotten," Judex nodded towards the map and swiped his finger across with a speed that the human eye would not be able to follow. To N it just looked like a lazy stroke. "Now, we have reports of someone with our allure hanging around this building right here."
N looked down at the large building and blinked at the name in the middle of a large square. "A college?"
"Yes. It appears that their tactic is to blend in with the humans, and that means acting like one too. They have been coming here almost every day."
"If only news could get here quicker, then we would not be wasting our time at some market," N nearly huffed but held himself in check. Being a human for a long time sure did have it's side effects.
"Well, our messengers could only do so much. This is not the only casualty on our hands, there are quite a few more deviants roaming about. I'm sure that if this case was a Division Blue, there would be much more others in here than us and we would have finished up long ago."
Division Blue. That was for the most serious cases. If an angel has went out of line, with the purpose of causing damage, the Custodi would be sent in to retrieve them at any means possible. Wayward angels were dangerous and could risk exposure. They do not truly know why a sudden switch is flipped on them, but others have been saying that the demons whisper in their ears, influencing them.
And then you have Division Yellow, the not-so-serious cases. You only have one, two or three watching over another angel, watching and waiting, waiting for the moment to capture them for interrogation. Some of these cases end up being harmless, others rather dire. That was the case with their current deviant. They showed no threat thus far, so there was no need to upgrade to Division Blue.
"After we wrap this up, I want you to continue with your studies." Judex leaned back in the seat, hands folding in lap once again.
"Of course," N never missed a beat and if he could in this form, he would smile. "I know I have much more to learn, this mission is making me that much more eager to go back to the class room."
"I am happy to hear that. Now, this college is practically deserted on weekends, so we will have to wait for Monday before we continue our search. In the meantime I want you to stay here. I know you're going to say your fine, but I think it will be better for both of your bodies to rest. Don't make me order you."
"I... understand."
"Good," Judex leaned over the map once again and murmured, "come out, come out wherever you are, Belle..."

A/N: Yaaaaay a lot of mystery out of the way! Hope you enjoyed this one. Once again, it is unedited! Cringe at the tenses!
