Chapter 22: Old tricks
The next morning JJ turned on her side in content. She faced the man that was laying next to her and she couldn't help but smile widely when he opened his eyes and looked back at her with a smirk on his face.
''Last night was…'' Hotch was about to say when JJ beat him to it.
''Busy, tiring, a great work-out we repeated four times?'' she asked happily as she moved closer towards him.
He cupped her cheek gently and kissed her on top of her head before he was going to answer her. ''Last night was all those things, but it was also very amazing!'' he expressed happily. He pulled JJ closer to his body as she giggled out in response. He slipped his hand under the dress shirt she was wearing, and he began to tickle her stomach.
JJ flew from the bed and she landed on the floor with one of the blankets covering her. She got up and kneeled down next to the bed, looking at Hotch as a wide smile spread across his face. ''Oh god, I hate tickling. Don't you ever do that again!'' she warned, knowing he was probably going to tease if he had the chance. ''I am warning you, mister.'' she said, holding a finger in the air because he was still smiling back at her. It was more of a devilish grin than a smile.
He rose from the bed in his boxers and slowly made his way towards JJ as she took a step back each time he took one forward. And then at once he leaped forward and ran after. He managed to grab her waist and he lifted her up over his shoulder easily. ''What are you going to do now?'' he asked, his voice filled with joy. He carried her back to the bed and gently put her back down on it as he moved on top of her.
JJ put her hands around his neck and pulled him in for a quick but amazing kiss. ''I wish we could stay here forever.'' she sighed out, knowing the real world was waiting for her out there. ''Just away from real life, our jobs, all of it.''
Hotch moved to the side and lay down on his back right next to her as he held her hand. ''I can take the week off.'' he blurted out. He had enough vacation days saved up to take some time off, and he was willing to do it so he could spent all of his time with the girl he loved. ''We can go to my beach house.''
JJ sat straight up in surprise. Not only was he suggesting to take a week off from his job, which she knew was everything to him. His job made him who he was. It was his life. So for him to suggest to take a week off meant the world. ''You want to take the week off and go to your beach house?'' she repeated.
''Yeah, I do.'' he replied as he got up and turned around to look at her. ''I want to spent more time with you, JJ. I want to get to know you better.''
JJ swallowed back at his words. Getting to know her was something he probably would never do. She could only tell him half-truths and lies to keep him safe, and for her to keep her job. ''You want to go today?''
''Yeah, if you can get time off work I would love to.'' he said with a grin on his face. ''We could finally get away from real life and our jobs, just like you just said you want. It'll be fun. I have a beach house in Virginia Beach, so we can just relax.''
The offer was extremely tempting for JJ, but their case had just gotten much worse and she needed to stay on top of things, but on the other hand she knew they could do without her for one week, if only a few days. ''I need to go into work for just a few hours to clear things up but then we could go.'' she suggested. ''I would love to.''
''Really?'' he asked. And instead of a response to his question she kissed him deeply. ''Well, there's my answer.
JJ jumped from the bed and walked towards her closet. She pulled out a bag and threw it onto the bed. ''So how much clothing am I going to need?'' she hinted with a grin on her face.
Hotch stepped from the bed as well and walked up behind her, putting his arms around her waist and pulling her close against him. He kissed her neck gently and settled his lips against her ear. ''I was planning to spend the week in bed.'' he teased as his hands traveled down her body, touching her bare thighs as he pushed the dress shirt upwards. ''I'd prefer no clothing at all.''
''Hmmm, that sounds awfully tempting.'' she sighed out as she leaned back against his body with her eyes shut. If she had a choice she'd stay in that moment forever. If she had a choice she would walk away from her job, her life, and she'd start over. But that was the problem. She didn't exactly have a choice in the matter. Being a field operative in the CIA was her life. It was her calling, and she knew she couldn't just walk away from it, especially since she was working on a massive case. She just couldn't drop everything and walk into the sunset with a man she had only known for six weeks. She knew Hotch wasn't just any man and her feelings for him were strong. Deep down she knew she had fallen for him, but she couldn't really admit it to herself, or even him. It would change everything.
''Good.'' he said, causing JJ to snap back to reality. He felt her turn around in his arms and facing him. ''I can pick you up at work.'' he suggested.
''That sounds like a plan!'' she agreed happily as she pulled out some clothes she wanted to take with her for their time away. ''I'll change and pack a bag and then I'll leave for work. Can you pick me up around one o'clock?''
''Yeah, of course.'' he said as he stepped back towards the bed to put on the rest of his clothes. ''Uhhmm, I am going to need my shirt.''
She pulled the dress shirt over her head and threw it his way, and then proceeded to put on her own clothes, feeling waves of different emotions going through her. For the most part it was only happiness, but in the back of her head she couldn't stop thinking about her assignment. And the rules of her job. It wasn't easy to push that all aside, yet she was risking it all.
Before JJ got to Chemicaltech Industries, she decided to visit the police station to get more information about Howard Schmidt's disappearance. It was the only task she had been assigned so she wanted to get to the files before she left with Hotch. Even though the CIA had seen the digital files, JJ knew that detectives and officers often put down notes and left out evidence that didn't seem to be important for the crime. So she wanted to check out everything for herself.
She walked inside and motioned towards the first cop she saw, knowing she couldn't just walk up to the detective that had been investigating the case. Her face couldn't be linked to the investigation. She had to fly under the radar. Literally.
''Officer,'' she called out innocently, turning on her sweet and shy act, hoping it would work. Most of the time it did. ''My husband came by to collect property from a deceased family member, but I can't find him. Could you tell me where he'd need to go?''
The officer was focused on JJ as he listened to her. ''It's on the second floor on the right, Ma'am.'' he replied calmly.
''Thank you, officer.'' JJ said as she began to make her way towards the elevator. She stepped inside the elevator and leaned with her back against the wall when she suddenly saw the familiar face approaching, which caused her face to turn sterner than before.
''Owen, what are you doing here?'' JJ whispered as he stepped next to her. She couldn't believe he was meddling in her business once again. It was so like him. Always turning up out the blue and acting as if nothing was going on.
''I knew this would be your first move, so I thought I'd help you out here. It will make things so much easier.'' he teased as he leaned to the side, causing their bodies to touch. He did it intentionally, but he felt like JJ didn't have to know that. ''Do you remember London?'' he asked, hinting at their time there together. Or rather a distraction they could use again.
''How could I forget?'' she smiled out, remembering the time they had spent their together. Even though Owen had broken her heart, she knew she'd never forget their times together. Together they were like one on cases. Something amazing, or even magical, would happen when they fought together. The rush, the adrenaline was something she had missed since working with him, but she knew that time was in their past. It was over, and now she was moving forward in another exciting direction. ''Your acting was truly convincing.''
''Yeah, I know.'' he agreed happily as the elevator doors opened. They walked out and JJ immediately turned to the right while Owen waited in the middle of the hallway.
JJ looked ahead of her, noticing that an officer sat behind a desk in the evidence room. She turned to Owen and winked at him. She waited for a single second when he began grabbing his throat and making gurgling sounds. So JJ ran towards the officer behind the desk and put on a panicked façade. ''Sir, there's man who can't breathe. I think he's choking.''
Never doubting the officer's will to save a life, JJ blocked his path a little as he jumped up from behind the desk and ran towards her. She walked a few feet forward and bumped into him as she lifted his keys without his knowledge. The officer didn't think anything of it and ran past.
JJ on the other hand walked towards the evidence room and stopped in front of the door where she started to try and unlock the door. The fourth key was the right one, so she slipped inside the room and locked the door behind her. She passed a few rows, all of them filled with boxes, and boxes. It was a never ending thing, and it just showed how many cases they dealt with, how much evil and pain was present in their world. But instead of focusing on that, JJ quickly found the right aisle. She walked to the middle and stopped when she saw the right numbers on a box. She pulled out the box and quickly put it down on the ground. She opened it, and was surprised to see that there wasn't much evidence in the box. She sifted through the box and quickly made pictures of all the pieces of evidence, and then she proceeded to take pictures of every page in the file. She had the option of taking everything with her, but that would lead to suspicions and she couldn't have that.
She put everything back inside and hurried back to the entrance. She opened the door and peaked around it to see if anyone was looking her way. When the coast was clear she slipped through the door and closed it behind her. She ran back into the hallway and dropped the keys in the same place where she had bumped into the officer.
She turned the corner and watched Owen sitting on the ground with people surrounding him as he was breathing into a paper bag. His face was red and he looked as if he had actually been close so choking. The scene caused a smile to spread across her face, knowing Owen would eventually have a laugh about it. She quickly made eye contact with him and nodded his way, letting him know that she had succeeded. She stepped back into the elevator and decided to wait for him outside so they wouldn't be seen together.
A few minutes later, Owen appeared in front of her with a smile across his face. He walked towards her and stepped next to her as she leaned against her car. ''Did you get everything?'' he asked.
''Yeah, I did.'' she replied. ''I'll print everything out at work and then I'll start looking into everything. Do you want to ride with me to Chemicaltech?''
''Yeah, sure.''
They both stepped into the car in complete silence. Owen looked at JJ every once in a while to see if he could read her, but her face was blank. He didn't know if he'd ever have the same kind of relationship with her as he had before, and in a way JJ seemed hardened. She wasn't anything like he used to see in her. Maybe she had been through traumatic assignments in the year that they were apart, or maybe, just maybe it was because of his mistakes. The mistakes that cost him the most important and happiest part of his life. He just couldn't figure her out anymore.
