Chapter 26: Backfire
Somehow JJ had managed to be invited over to Warren's house. He seemed very happy when she expressed an interest in him beside work, and like Owen suspected, he jumped at the chance to ask her out. So that made the nightmare too real for JJ, but she had decided to put up with it and go through it as quick as possible. Afterwards she would forget all about it and move forward.
In order to get ready for her so called date with Warren, she was changing into different clothes in a CIA safe house that was close to his house. Their division had set up computers to monitor her every move when she went into the house. Even Owen was present. He had been assigned lead agent and that gave JJ a small amount of comfort. She knew if anyone could handle it, it would be Owen. So as she did a year earlier when they were partners, she put her trust in him. To keep her safe, and to keep her from crossing that very thin line.
JJ stepped in front of the mirror and looked at herself from head to toe, feeling a little out of place. She wasn't someone who was proud to use her looks to get something and she had never gotten used to that. If there was anything she had to learn it was that. But for this mission she's be okay.
She wore tight black jeans with a beautiful champagne colored top on top of it. Underneath her jeans, she wore high heels that gave her endlessly long legs. Her hair was straight and her make-up was a little darker than usual and made her eyes look brighter and bigger. She looked ready. And deep down she knew she was ready. She could do this mission fairly easily, but it was harder because she was now involved with another man who she didn't want to betray.
''JJ, are you ready?'' Owen called out as he sat behind one of the screens in the living room of the safe house. They had someone outside Warren's house for extra security if anything were to go wrong.
The moment Owen looked up from the screen, JJ suddenly appeared into the living room and he felt himself freeze. She looked gorgeous as always, even though she didn't always believe it herself. She was truly beautiful. So he rose from the chair and walked towards her with her handbag in his hand. ''You look amazing, JJ.'' he encouraged.
JJ turned to him, feeling the nerves course through her body. ''Thanks. I…I…uhh…just need to get myself together.''
Owen took her hand and pulled her with him into the next room and closed the door behind him. He bend down and took a gun from his ankle and handed it to JJ. ''I want you to take this with you.'' he insisted.
JJ held the gun in her hand as the shock was still written all over her face. ''But Collins doesn't want me armed.'' she reminded him. ''I can't take a gun with me.''
''JJ, listen to me.'' Owen began. ''Your safety is more important to me than anything else. Put the gun in your handbag just in case.''
''Okay. Thanks, Owen.'' JJ said. She knew he had her back. It was noticeable from his concern for her. It wasn't like she had never done an assignment like this one before, but it was different and very sudden. They didn't have a lot of time to prepare.
''If anything goes wrong you get out of there or signal us.'' he said as he handed her the tiny earpiece. He took a step back as JJ put it in her ear. ''We'll be in constant contact with you.''
JJ looked down at her watch and then looked back up at Owen. ''I should go. I'm already running a little late.''
''Good luck, JJ!'' he said before she disappeared from his sight and out of the safe house. He walked back into the living room and joined the other agents, ready to monitor JJ and pick up on any clues involving their case.
After dinner, JJ and Warren resided in the living room, both of them with a glass of wine in their hands. Dinner hadn't been as awkward JJ expected it to be at first. Warren had been easy and nice to talk to. If she was honest, she actually underestimated him. He was very well traveled and had talked about lots of different cultures, which definitely interested JJ. So conversation had been flowing all night, but the topic of work never came up, and whenever JJ tried to talk about it he managed to start on another subject.
''If you'll excuse me I would like to go to the restroom.'' JJ said, interrupting their conversation abruptly but she had to search his study and maybe plant a listening device so they had ears inside his house to get further intell.
''Of course.'' Warren said as he rose from the couch and took JJ's hand to help her up. ''Restroom is down the hall, third door on the right.'' he explained to her.
''I'll be right back.'' JJ said as she clutched her purse under her arms. She stepped out of the living room, her heels making the only sound in the house as she walked down the hall. She walked past the restroom and went for the door at the end of the hallway, knowing it was the study. She believed the study would give them vital information, if there was any. She knew from work that Warren liked to have a paperless office, so everything was on his computers. In order to get more on him, she needed to hack his personal home computer. Fortunately, she knew exactly how to do that. So she stepped into the study and began to walk towards the desk, but she stopped when she suddenly heard the safety mechanism of a gun behind her. She whirled around in one turn and was faced with the barrel of a gun, held by no one other than Warren.
''What are you doing with a gun?'' JJ croaked out as innocently as she could, hoping Owen got the message over the com.
''A few months after I hired you files started disappearing from my computer.'' Warren began as he held the gun at JJ's eyes level. He ignored her question and went on. ''Then the night of the gala someone breached the servers of the science wing.'' he continued. ''I didn't want to believe it was an inside job but when I caught you and Owen Riley on our floor the same night someone broke into my computer, I knew it had to be you.''
''So you believe I had something to do with the breach of the servers and the missing files?'' she summarized.
''Yes, because you wouldn't be here of your own free will.'' Warren stated, noticing that JJ didn't even flinch as he kept the gun up. ''Who do you work for?
''What are you talking about?'' JJ asked, trying to deny his accusations. Well, they weren't accusations. He knew everything, which meant she was in more danger than she ever imagined to be. ''Tyler, please!'' she begged.
''Oh stop the act!'' he yelled as he stepped towards her.
''Fine!'' JJ said coldly as she dropped her purse to the ground in an attempt to distract him, but he only kept his eyes on her. ''I know about the weapon and I also know that you're working with Asad Hawsawi!''
The gun nearly fell from Warren's hands at the mention of that name. ''Hawsawi?'' he croaked out. ''Why would you believe that?''
''Another agent saw him emerging from your house, Tyler. You don't have to deny it.'' JJ said, knowing Owen was probably on his way to her since she mentioned Warren's gun. She was just trying to get more time before she'd end up shot, or even dead.
''Asad Hawsawi is in town?'' Warren asked in fear.
Before JJ could answer the question, the windows in the study shattered as bullets were fired at them. Because of her instinctual nature, JJ immediately went down to the floor and tackled Warren to the floor as well. She grabbed the gun from his hand and put in the waistband of her jeans, and then she quickly retrieved her own gun from her purse as bullets kept flying around them, the sounds of the gunshots causing a ringing in her ear.
''We're under attack! Shots fired! I repeat shots fired!'' JJ yelled into her com in despair. She got up from the ground with the gun in her hands and started shooting back at whoever was outside. She couldn't get see from which direction the bullets were coming from because three windows were shattered, which suggested more than one shooter. ''Get out of here!'' she yelled to Warren as she emptied the gun so they had enough cover to leave the study. She quickly closed the door and let her gun fall to the ground when she realized she had emptied her clip. She turned around with Warren's gun in her hands and she pointed it at him as he stared back at her in fear.
''JJ, hold on! Our ETA is three minutes!'' Owen said, hoping she had enough time to stay safe.
''Owen, I need someone in here now. Can't you send Wheeler in? He's in front of the house.'' she said while they still stood in the hallway. The shooting suddenly stopped, so she grabbed Warren's arm and pulled him with her into the kitchen where they could find cover behind the counters in case anyone started shooting again.
''We lost all contact with Wheeler, JJ!'' Owen yelled into the com.
Instead of talking back to Owen, JJ decided to focus on the situation. She cleared her head and looked around the house. It had at least three entry points and four large windows in the living room. So she knew she was already in the best place for cover.
''Why are you so afraid of Asad Hawsawi?'' JJ asked as she still held the gun in her hand.
''He's trying to stop me…'' Warren stumbled in fear. He had apparently never been in any kind of danger in his life by the look on his face.
''Stop you from what?''
''From selling the weapon to the Russians.''
JJ couldn't believe what she was hearing. The agency believed that there was only one party involved, but involvement of the Russians didn't make it much better. ''Who is your…'' she tried to say, but before she could finish her sentence the door to the kitchen opened and a man in black spotted them and started firing his gun. JJ got up and with Warren right behind her as they ran towards the living room, seeking cover from the couch.
JJ looked up from behind the couch, still seeing only one man in the house. She got up from behind the couch and fired three shots but the other man managed to knock the gun out of her hand, and grab her by the throat tightly.
JJ felt her body being lifted in the air as her hands struggled to keep the hands away from her neck, her body was starting to go weak as the air left her body. She stretched one arm and managed to grab the glass of wine from the side table and she smashed it onto his head.
He stumbled backwards and went for his gun, but JJ leaped forward and kicked the gun out his hand with ease. As she turned around to deliver another blow, she saw another man with a gun storming into the living room, so she stepped the man behind and used him as a body shield as the bullets started ripping through the air. She felt him go weak in her arms so she dropped to the floor and got his gun, and within seconds she pointed it at the last man and shot him three times. In the leg, the chest, and his stomach. He fell backwards but managed to get another shot of which hit JJ's arm. She grabbed her arm in response, and was left standing in the middle of the living room with a gun in one arm as the other held onto the wound the gunshot had inflicted upon her. But she knew it wasn't over when she heard footsteps coming up from behind her. So she turned around, and was faced with an automatic weapon. So she once again sought cover behind the couch where Warren was still sitting, his body shaking in fear.
JJ got onto her knees and lifted her hands above the couch and fired five shots, and then everything went silent and in response Warren got up from the floor, thinking it was safe, but bullets sounded in the air. JJ sat back and watched him fall to the ground, his body covered in holes as she watched him bleed out.
She was about to shoot again when she heard the familiar voices of her team raid the house. A few shots ringed in her ear again until she heard Owen calling out her name.
She got up from behind the couch, still holding onto her arms as she held onto the gun. It had been awfully close, and it scared her more than anything. Usually she had been with Owen in dangerous situation, so they managed to improvise together, but now she had been on her own.
Owen walked into the living when he saw JJ stepping towards them from behind the couch. He immediately ran towards her at the sight of blood on her skin. ''JJ!'' he called out. ''Let me look at it!'' he insisted when he stood in front of her. Her body arms were shaking and she looked utterly terrified. ''Are you alright?'' he asked, trying to look at her wound but her hand kept it covered.
''Did you get what you wanted?'' she asked in near tears, the shock still coursing through her body. The fear suddenly came out. She had managed to keep herself together but now it was all rushing to the surface. ''Warren is dead and he can't tell us which Russian group is involved.'' she said angrily. She stormed past him and out of the house to get the fresh air she desperately needed.
