Chapter 40: Unspoken bond
The room where JJ was seated was stuffy and cold, and from her surroundings she had immediately realized they were going to treat her like a suspect instead of a witness. But she was more than ready to confront whatever they had on her. She wasn't going to let the FBI get involved in their case, and she wasn't going to reveal her secret since she had gone through extreme lengths to keep it.
The door opened and JJ looked up at the agent who had approached her at the office. It was agent Crawford without his partner. She noticed the file he had in his hand and he put it down after he sat down across from her with a suspicious look on his face.
''So how can I help?'' JJ asked with a smile on her face, reminding herself to be polite and as helpful as she possibly could.
''We just want to ask you some questions about Tyler Warren.'' he started off. ''The ME ruled his death a suicide, but we have our suspicions regarding his death.'' he went on.
''Mr. Warren and I worked together closely but I do not believe he had a reason to commit suicide.'' JJ contradicted, showing her personal relationship with Warren and throwing the FBI of course by making sure they wouldn't consider her for faking his so called suicide. ''Tyler was successful and joyful. I don't see he had a reason to commit suicide.''
Crawford listened to JJ closely and opened up the file in front of him. It was JJ's personal file, but there wasn't too much in it. She had no record. If anything she lived a good and extremely successful life. ''Alicia Clarke, Tyler Warren's personal assistant, said and I quote: Tyler Warren was the kindest man I have ever met. He was dedicated to this company and taking it to the next level.'' the agent quoted. ''What do you have to say about that?''
''I don't see a point in discussing Mrs. Clarke's personal opinion of Mr. Warren.'' JJ said professionally.
''You see, Ms. Allen, you keep referring to Tyler Warren as Mr. Warren, but all of your colleagues have stated that you and Tyler Warren were extremely close.'' he contradicted, trying to undermine JJ. ''It was even said that you would be the one to know if he had any secrets, or if he had enemies.''
JJ leaned back in her chair calmly and looked across the table and to the one-way mirror, knowing more agents were probably observing the interview that was taking place. But she wasn't impressed. She knew all about interrogation techniques and intimidation. ''Agent Crawford, I started working at Chemicaltech Industries eight months ago with little to no experience.'' she began to explain. ''Tyler took me under his wing. He was my mentor. And yes, we were close. And no, I don't know why he died.'' she said angrily. The truth was that she was close with Warren. He was a mentor to her. He had helped her out a lot at the company, and if it hadn't been for him her job at Chemicaltech had probably turned into a nightmare. JJ had once considered him a close friend, before she realized he had ties to Christian Ward and Asad Hawsawi.
''Four and a half months ago, a break-in occurred at the company. A few months before that one of Chemicaltech Industries' top scientists, Howard Schmidt, disappeared from his apartment.'' he summed up.
''I never met Howard Schmidt. I've heard of him through colleagues, but I don't understand what he has to do with any of this.''
Crawford opened his file and pushed it towards JJ. ''Howard Schmidt ran an illegal nuclear program within Chemicaltech Industries and we believe he did it under Tyler Warren's purview.''
JJ was staying calm, but what she thought was an interview seemed to be becoming a meeting, or a briefing of some sorts. They weren't actually asking her any questions. ''Sir, why am I here?'' she asked for further clarification. ''You aren't asking me any questions. You're just informing me.''
On the other side of the glass, Hotch and a few other agents were watching the scene unfold in front of them. It was right before JJ arrived at FBI Headquarters that Hotch had realized what purpose they had in mind for JJ, and he didn't know if he liked it, or if he was willing to pull her into his world.
''Ms. Allen, you're not here under suspicion of murder or anything involving the death or Mr. Warren.'' Crawford began to explain, but JJ interrupted him.
''Than why am I here?'' she asked, her voice steady and soft.
''We want you to be our confidential informant.'' he responded simply.
''What?'' JJ exclaimed. The FBI asking her to be their CI was the last thing she could've ever expected. It was a complete shock to her. ''Why me?''
''Because of your close relationship with Tyler Warren, and because you're now working closely with the new CEO.'' Crawford replied. ''You have a personal relationship with one of the agents working on our taskforce.''
''Taskforce? Which agent?'' she asked, pretending as if she didn't know anything about it.
''We suspect that Mr. Warren had ties to a terrorist organization, or that someone may have killed him because someone else within the company was involved with terrorism.'' he explained. ''Files from the company indicated that bio toxins and chemical weapons have gone missing or were misplaced on multiple occasions. We suspect that someone at Chemicaltech has been selling weapons, and if it was Warren we need to find out to whom the weapons were being sold.''
''Is this for real?'' JJ asked in shock. The FBI knew so much more than she ever imagined.
''Yes. We need someone with eyes on the inside.'' he said. ''If anything suspicious takes place we want you to report it to Agent Hotchner. Your personal relationship is the perfect advantage to disclose information to this taskforce.''
''Where is he?'' JJ asked, her voice slightly annoyed with the fact that she had been baited into coming down to the FBI.
The door to the interrogation room opened and Hotch walked inside, nodding to Crawford, giving him some sort of signal to leave the room. He sat down across from JJ, hoping she'd accept his involvement in what had just transpired. ''Do you have any questions?''
JJ leaned forward and put her elbows on the table, looking into the brown familiar eyes, now filled with a certain distance and professionalism. ''Do you really want this?'' she asked for reassurance.
''JJ, this is your chance to do some good. If I were you I'd do it.'' Hotch responded, hoping JJ would agree to cooperate with the FBI. But he knew there was a possibility that his lies were going to hold her back from helping them out.
''I have to think about it.'' she said, rising from the chair. She grabbed her purse from the table and threw it over her shoulder as she walked towards the door. ''I'll see you tonight.'' JJ said in a soft tone.
''JJ…'' Hotch called out to stop her from leaving without making sure she wasn't upset. ''Are we okay?''
She turned around with a small smile on her face. ''Aaron, you were doing your job. We're fine.'' she assured. She walked towards him and gave him a quick kiss on his lips. Then she walked away and out of the room, leaving the FBI agents behind.
She quickly made her way out of the building and turned left onto the streets. She kept walking in a steady pace, until she suddenly heard a car slowing down behind her. She knew something behind her was happening, so she just kept walking and then stopped. She turned around and faced the driver, a smile crossing her face almost instantaneously.
''Are you following me?'' JJ questioned as she stepped towards the car.
Christian leaned forward to the passenger's side and opened the door for JJ. ''Get in!'' he demanded.
JJ stepped inside the car and closed the door behind her. She leaned back and made herself look extremely comfortable and confident. ''So, I'm here, you're here. What's next?'' she whispered seductively.
''You're coming with me to meet my associates.'' he stated as he drove off with speed. ''They're very interested in meeting you.''
''If you wouldn't mind, I'd like to change clothes.'' she said with ease. ''My apartment is only a few blocks away.''
''Sure, I would love to see where a woman like you lives.'' he said with curiosity.
JJ gave him directions to her CIA apartment, knowing a lot of her belongings were still there. She had kept it just in case, and this was the perfect moment to use it. He pulled up in the front of the building and followed her inside and into her apartment.
Once she closed the door behind him she dropped her purse and coat onto the nearest chair. She then moved towards the kitchen and took out an expensive bottle of scotch along with two glasses. With the items in her hand, she walked towards Christian, her body moving sensually. ''Pour me one too, will you.'' she said as she handed it to him. She immediately walked away from him, lifting her shirt over her head and dropping it to the floor, leaving her upper body only covered in her bra. She moved into the bedroom and quickly stripped herself of her shoes and trousers. She walked past the door one more time in only her panties and bra, knowing he was watching her.
With the glass of scotch in his hand, Christian watched JJ move past the open door. Just like in the time he had spent earlier with her, her body was toned and incredibly sexy. She moved around like she owned the world and it reminded him of the seven months they spent together. Most of the time they had together was with her in his bed or in his favorite bar. That was about it. He had such a great time with her that he didn't want to involve her with his work, so he had intentionally kept her at a distance, never letting her find out who he really was and what he did.
He took the second glass and walked into the bedroom. He put the glasses down on a side table in the corner. He walked up towards JJ as she was standing in front of her closet.
''Can't you give a girl some privacy?'' JJ retorted as she heard him walk up behind her. She felt his hands land on her sides and moving up slowly.
''When you left Moscow eight months ago, where did you go, Alex?'' he asked, turning her around and gently pushing her into the wall behind her.
JJ whimpered as she collided with the wall. She watched him slowly closing the distance between them, the smile on her face growing wider. ''Why? Did you miss me, Chris?'' she asked, her voice low and hoarse.
''I did.'' he replied, moving the last inch before their bodies were touching. He let one of his hands slide up her body.
JJ gripped his hand before he could actually do anything. ''I hate to do this now,'' she said, pretending to be sorry about it. ''but I should get changed so we can go. And like I told you, I don't mix business with pleasure.'' she ended as she moved away from him and back to the closet. She was about to pull some jeans from it, when she suddenly felt a cold blade pressed against her neck, and Christian pulling her against his body. ''What are you doing?'' JJ croaked out.
''I watched you walk out of the FBI offices!'' he spoke angrily and viciously. ''I'm going to ask you this once, who are you working for?''
JJ felt the knife pressing into her skin, causing her to gasp. She forced herself to stay calm. This was one the things, she was afraid could happen. Ward catching her at the FBI, or the FBI catching her with Ward. ''I work for myself!'' she said breathlessly. ''The FBI has been asking me questions about Warren's death because I worked with him to acquire the weapon on my own, you son of a bitch!''
Ward stepped away from her and let the knife fall to the ground, not believing that he threatened someone he cared for. ''I needed to know! I'm sorry, Alex.'' he whispered.
JJ turned around with her hands covering her throat. She leaned against the wall and watched as Christian stepped back with regret on his face, which led JJ to believe that he cared more for her than she ever could've imagined. He looked truly sorry. ''If we're going to work together, we have to trust each other.'' she breathed out.
''I do trust you, Alex.'' Christian began. ''The only reason I didn't involve you with my work was because I didn't want to pull you into my life. But now I realize there's no stopping you so we're going to do this.'' he went on. ''We're going to do this together.''
JJ was blown away by his moment of honesty. He was expressing feelings, which she knew meant a lot to him. ''I'll get dressed.'' she responded, realizing Ward did trust her and that was going to make her assignment that much easier.
