Chapter 46: Dark turn
The next morning JJ was out of bed early and ready to meet up with Garcia. She had found information that was according to her, vital to JJ's investigation so JJ had immediately jumped at the chance to meet. She had left a note on the nightstand for Hotch and changed into casual clothing before she left their apartment.
And about half an hour later, JJ was once again sitting across from the hacker. But this time the tension was much less and they both seemed have a little more trust in one another than before. JJ was holding onto a warm mug with steaming coffee in it as she stared across the table, staying silent.
Garcia put her elbows on the table and leaned forward, making their entire meeting more suspicious. She didn't want anyone to overhear them, even though that was a very small chance since the dinner was mostly empty. ''So the first thing I did was break the encryption key on the micro disc, which was harder than I expected. Just the level of encryption suggests that Warren was intent on keeping the data private. And to the eye of an amateur the disc appeared to be empty.'' she began to explain. ''Most of the data on it were chemical formulas and you need to bring those to scientist because I have no idea what any of the mean.''
''Okay,'' JJ said in disappointment. She was hoping that Garcia had found more since their meeting was urged by her. ''Did you find anything else?''
''Yes,'' Garcia stated simply. She sat straight up, ready to inform JJ of what she had found. ''There was an address on the disc. I looked it up and it's the address of an abandoned storage facility which hasn't been operated in five years.''
JJ immediately realized that the facility could've been used to house the weapons in after they disappeared from Chemicaltech's plant. ''Can you send me the address?'' JJ asked quickly and she was about to jump up from the booth when Garcia stopped her by clearing her throat.
''That isn't all.'' she said hastily. ''Like you suggested, I hacked Howard Schmidt's GPS and made sure that Christian Ward had false information on his location so he had no idea where Schmidt was hiding out.'' she went on. ''But I tracked Schmidt to the warehouse. He was there yesterday.''
''Oh my god!'' JJ breathed out in despair. ''Thank you, Garcia. This is what we've been looking for. I have to go. Now!''
''But I have more information on Ward's associates!'' Garcia interrupted.
''You can give it to me later.'' JJ said as she threw on her jacket. She left the diner without another word and hurried to her car.
Luckily, the streets weren't crowded because of the time. JJ was racing through traffic to get to Langley as soon as she possibly could. And during the drive she managed to send both Owen and Collins a 911 text, asking them both to come in earlier.
JJ knew she could get fired over her actions, but she had found the first real lead in months, and she had to see it through no matter what. They were talking about the location of a nuclear bomb that could be used by anyone at any moment if Schmidt was going to sell it on the black market. Not to mention that she didn't even know his intentions. For all they knew Schmidt himself had plans for it. At first she believed he was just an innocent bystander and that he got mixed up with the wrong people, but he had obviously run the nuclear program of his own free will.
After JJ had reached the parking lot of Langley, she jumped from her car and even forgot to lock it as she hurried inside. She quickly passed security and the entrance and made her way across the building and ended up in front of SAD's door. She typed in her security code and swiped her ID, and then stormed inside. She already saw Owen and Collins sitting in his office, so she walked across the bullpen and threw her purse onto her empty desk as she passed it. She stepped in front of the office, opened the door, and walked inside where she was instantly faced with a disappointed looking Collins and an angry looking Owen.
Owen rose from his chair once JJ was inside the office. He walked towards her, but kept enough distance between them. ''Where have you been?'' he asked, the concern taking over the anger almost immediately. He had been worried sick about her ever since his conversation with Collins. He had tried to track her down, but it had nearly impossible. She wasn't answering her phone and he knew it was untraceable. He had tried both of her apartment but she hadn't been there, and now she was standing across from them breathing heavily as if something terrible had happened.
''I might have a location on the bomb.'' she blurted out, ready to defend her actions.
Instead of giving JJ a speech, Collins jumped up from his chair and got into action. JJ may have gone rogue for a little while, but he always trusted her, so he believed her. ''Okay, listen carefully.'' he began. ''Owen take the strike team to the location. JJ, you're going to lead the strike team into the building and Owen will be your second in command.''
''Sir, I should be running point. JJ doesn't have any experience being in charge of a strike team.'' Owen reminded him. He wasn't jealous of JJ. He was just looking for everyone's safety.
''You're good, Owen. But we both know JJ is much better at stealth and that's exactly what we need right now.'' Collins explained simply. ''We will stay in contact through operations. Todd will run point from here and help you lead inside the building.''
Both JJ and Owen listened closely and nodded when Collins was done giving orders. They all stormed out of the office and started to prepare for the raid. Collins was in operations with his analysts and having them check out the location through satellite, and informing everyone on their plan of action. Owen was alerting SAD's strike team to assemble as soon as possible, while JJ was drawing up a plan to raid the building after she received blue prints of the building from Todd.
They were all preparing themselves for what was about to happen, knowing this could be everything that they needed to find the missing weapons. This operation was going to be more important than anything else they had ever done before.
After two hours of preparations the strike team was on their way to the location JJ had given the CIA. The team had been informed of the plan, and the proper suits were assembled for the team to wear as they went into the building. Every detail had been discussed, and everyone seemed to be ready for what was about to transpire.
JJ was sitting next to Owen in the back of the van with the other agents. Her hands were clasped together and her eyes were at the floor. She could feel Owen staring at her intently, and it caused her to look up at him. She was surprised to see her own fear and terror reflected in his eyes. He wasn't known to be fearful, but just like JJ knew, this assignment was different than any other. So much more was at stake, for everyone. ''We can do this.'' JJ whispered to him confidently.
''I know we can.'' Owen agreed in a whisper. ''But just in case,'' he went on sadly. ''…I need you to know how much I enjoyed working with you again, JJ. It has been an honor.''
''Thank you, Owen. I feel the same, even though you can be a pain in the ass from time to time.'' she said to lighten the mood since she wasn't ready to say goodbye.
At that same moment, the car came to a stop an all the agents got out of the van. The other two vans parked next to them. JJ stepped in the middle of the group of agents as they all stepped around her. She looked all of them in the eye, knowing each of them were doing their job for their country, and each of them was risking their life. ''We're separating into four groups of five.'' JJ began, repeating the plan to them all again. ''Owen, Christopher, Rick and I will lead the teams inside.'' she went on. ''You've all been given a point of entry, so let's go!'' she ordered. ''Good luck, everyone!'' she said as the teams went their separate ways.
JJ and her team moved silently across the lot and stopped right in front of a point of entry. JJ stepped back, checking if her com was working.
''Ready to enter the south side.'' she heard Owen say. She watched as one of her team members silently picked the lock on the door. He nodded when he was done and then stepped back again to make room for JJ to enter first.
''All teams in position?'' she asked softly. She waited for confirmation from the three other teams and within seconds she got it. ''Teams move in!'' she said.
JJ looked behind her one last time and watched everyone nod in her direction. She drew her weapon and carefully opened the door. She was followed in by four of her fellow agents. The facility was dark and humid as they slowly but steadily kept moving forward.
JJ's heart was racing a mile a minute from the pressure she was feeling. She was confident enough to her job, but she knew that the entire team was carrying an enormous weight of the operation on their shoulder.
They moved through a long and empty hallway that led to one door at the end of it. Once they reached the door, JJ signaled them to stop. She turned on her com to speak into it. ''Teams report in!''
''East side cleared.''
''West side clear.''
''South side cleared as well.'' she heard Owen say over the coms. She turned to the door and saw that their team had to bypass security in order to get inside. She stepped aside and watched as one of the other agents quickly went to work on unlocking the door. It only took him a few seconds before security was down and they were once again ready to get inside.
JJ stepped in front of the door and opened it carefully, not knowing what would be on the other side. She could almost imagine it. A dark room filled with everyone's nightmare. She quickly pushed her fears aside and they walked into the room. They quickly cleared it since it was average in size, but what concerned JJ the most were the large crates standing against the back of the wall.
''We found something!'' JJ signaled to the other teams as everyone put their weapons down. She walked to one of the crates and carefully opened it up. And once she was faced with the inside, she felt her heart sink. It contained eight canisters of what she expected to be enriched uranium, which was exactly what disappeared from Chemicaltech Industries.
''Pull back!'' JJ warned immediately. Although they were wearing suits to protect themselves against toxic chemicals, she couldn't take any risks. ''We need to call in Collins and a Hazmat team ASAP!''
About an hour later, both JJ and Owen were still standing on the parking lot of the facility, waiting for Collins to tell them what was going on with the missing chemicals. JJ had felt extremely hopeful at first that they got it all, but as time passed by she realized something bad was happening and all she could do was wait for her boss to inform them.
She was leaning on the hood of a car with Owen next to her. She looked to her side and saw that he was just as distraught as she was. ''I hate this!'' she exclaimed. ''We have no idea what's going on.''
''We will in a few seconds.'' Owen responded when he saw Collins approaching them with a horrified look in his eyes.
They both met him halfway and then stopped again, waiting for their boss to explain what was going on.
''Six crates containing eight canisters of chemical toxins each were found.'' Collins began to explain. ''But the seventh crate was empty. The Hazmat team found traces of uranium inside, which means it has been moved and could be used at any moment.''
For a moment JJ's heart just stopped. Her world stopped. She turned around and felt her stomach turn, and she couldn't help but think of the innocent lives that could be lost.
''The nuclear bomb is missing?'' Owen asked.
''Yes.'' Collins replied.
