Chapter 53: Four Minutes

JJ had fallen to the ground with an aching pain to her shoulder. It was the all too familiar feeling of getting shot, the bullet tearing through her flesh. She fought against her restraints as the blood soaked her jacket. She quickly got up, three more bullets echoing through the building. She had absolutely no way of knowing where she was or how she could get out of the building, but her priority was to get to the bomb before it went off. The adrenaline was the thing that kept her going as she heard Christian's angry voice echoing through the building, as she searched for something to get her restraints off. She slipped into a restroom, realizing she was in an abandoned office building. She settled against the wall as the pain ripped through her shoulder, but she forced herself to focus. The only way to get out of her restraints was going to be painful, but it was the only way. So she breathed in deeply as she leaned against the cold wall, and then she lowered her hands behind her back and put her feet through her arms, causing her arms to get in front of her, all the while staying quiet through ache she felt going through her body. She then leaned back against the wall to calm her breathing down, getting ready for the most painful part of removing the flexi cuffs from her wrists. She lifted her arms towards her mouth and pulled the cuffs tightly around her wrists to put more pressure on them. She then stepped forward, holding her arms in front of her. With force she drove her elbows into her ribcage, causing the cuffs to get pulled into her chest and breaking the mechanism on the cuffs. The cuffs broke apart and fell to the ground as JJ struggled to stay quiet after the amount of the pressure she had put on her shoulder. She rid herself of her jacket and then carefully lifted her t-shirt over her head, leaving her in a black tank top. She wrapped the t-shirt around her wound, hoping it would slow down the heavy bleeding. She could already feel her head spinning from the blood loss and she knew she didn't have very long.

With her one injured arm hanging carefully to her side, she peaked around the door of the restroom and slipped back into the hallway. At the end she saw another door which she hoped would lead to an office with maybe a phone or computer so she had the chance to send another message. She ran to the end of the hallway and stormed into the offices, and she felt a little relieved when she noticed a few desks with phones on them. She stormed to the closest phone and dialed the number she knew by heart. She waited for it to ring and then she heard the voice on the other side, feeling her spirits being lifted. If she knew Hotch, she knew he had done something with her text. She hoped he went to the CIA because he was her only shot. ''Aaron?'' JJ called out desperately.

Hotch froze in his tracks, causing Owen to come to halt as well. ''JJ? My god, where are you?''

''I'm in an empty office space. I don't know where. They blindfolded me. I got away, but I…I…'' she said with fear, her voice panicked and low.

Owen ripped the phone from Hotch's hand and put it to his ear, knowing that respect didn't matter in that moment. He needed information from JJ, which Hotch wasn't going to ask her because he was probably only thinking about JJ's life. ''JJ, it's me.''

''Owen?'' she croaked out. ''I've been shot. I need help. The weapon is somewhere in the building. We don't have much more time.'' she rambled on, not making much sense to her sentences. And before another word could leave her lips, she felt the cold metal pressed against the back of her head.

JJ had stopped talking, and Owen immediately knew something was wrong. ''JJ? JJ?'' he yelled. ''We're coming. Hold on!''

With those last words, JJ dropped the phone to the ground and froze completely. Something inside her broke in that moment, knowing she was going to die. It was the end of her life.

''Turn around!'' Christian ordered, his voice cold and distant. He watched her carefully as she faced him. He looked down at her hands and had no idea how she had gotten her restraint off. ''You're something else, Alex.'' he whispered.

''We both know my name isn't Alex.'' JJ shot back. She despised the man in front of her. He was everything she hated. A coldblooded murderer, and he was about to put mass murderer to his list.

''And we both know you're never going to tell me!'' he said with a smirk on his face. He pushed her away from the desk and made her walk in front of him as he pressed the gun against her back. ''I don't know how you escaped from your restraints with a gunshot wound, but I am impressed, darling.''

''Don't be!''

''Keep walking!'' he demanded as he made her walk back to the elevators. Once they reached them, he pushed the button and he stepped next to JJ as she looked down at the floor in defeat. ''Don't worry, darling. You're not going to die today.''

JJ wanted to respond, but she kept staring down at the floor as she listened to him. She knew he probably wanted a response from her, which she wasn't about to give him.

''You're coming with me, and as we leave you can see this city burn down with your friends and family in it.'' he whispered in her ear happily. ''I'm going to take everything that matters to you.''

She finally looked up and into his eyes, her face flat and stoic. ''I've got nothing to lose, Christian. I never did.'' she lied. Once in her life she had nothing to lose, but now that she had Hotch in her life, she could lose everything. He was her everything and losing him would destroy her completely. She would never get over it. ''You can kill me or torture me, I don't care.''

''Torture, darling?'' he repeated. ''What a good idea!'' he said as he shoved JJ into the elevator. Once inside, he took her injured arm and bend it behind her back forcefully as he heard her hiss out in pain. ''You can't take it?''

She closed her eyes, focusing on everything she was about to lose if she was going to give up the fight. Hotch's face flashed before her eyes, and just that made her refocus and signal out the pain as best she possibly could. ''You have no idea what I can take.'' JJ whispered back, pulling on her arm and forcing it to snap from its socket so she was released from his grip. She used her other elbow and slammed it back into his face. She quickly whirled around as she held onto her injured arm. She gave him one last kick to the face, and then he fell unconscious to the ground. She took the gun from his hand and walked out of the elevator when it reached the floor Christian wanted to go to on.

She immediately heard two voices in the distance. She knew it had to Grigory and Ivan, so she silently moved through the hallway and ended up at the end where she saw both of them standing around a crate. ''Hands in the air!'' she yelled, causing both men to spin around at once. ''Guns on the ground, slowly.'' she ordered. JJ watched as Ivan put the safety on and dropped his gun to the ground, but Grigory seemed to be looking for a way to out of the situation, so when JJ saw him lift his gun again so she fired once, shooting him straight in the heart. Once Grigory fell back, Ivan went for the gun on the ground, but JJ got another shot off in time causing the last man to fall back. She ran forward removing both guns from the men. She also took one of their phones, once again dialing, but this time she went straight for Owen's number, knowing she was going to need his expertise if she wanted to live. She stepped in front of the crate and then she realized how little time there actually was left. It read four minutes before the nuclear weapon was set to go off. ''Owen?'' JJ nearly cried out over the phone.

Owen was sitting behind the wheel in his SUV with Hotch next to him in the passenger's seat. ''JJ, we're on our way. ETA is five.''

''Owen, there's only four minutes left.'' she said in a complete panic. ''They must have moved up the time. I don't know what to do.''

Owen could hear the complete and utter panic in JJ's voice. He realized he needed to stay strong and calm for her if they wanted to get through it. ''JJ, I need you to focus.'' he said calmly. ''Listen to my voice, okay.''

She breathed in deeply, her skin sticky because of the sweat that was covering her skin from the panic. ''I need to put you on speaker.'' she breathed out. ''Tell me what to do.''

''Is there anything sharp around you? Scissors, a knife?''

JJ ran back to the two men and pulled a knife from a boot and then stormed back to the crate. ''I got something.''

''Describe it to me!''

JJ carefully opened up one of the mechanisms where one of the triggers was placed. ''I see wires.'' she began to describe. ''Blue, yellow, green, white, black.'' she summed up.

Owen suddenly parked the car on the side of road, knowing that he could only help JJ now by using his knowledge so she could defuse the bomb. ''JJ, is there one timer? And how many triggers do you see?''

''Uhh, I don't know.'' she cried out as a tear streamed down her face. ''Owen, I don't know.'' she said as she was hovered above the crate.

Hotch was sitting back in the car as he heard JJ's desperate voice over the phone, not fully realizing the extent of the situation she was already in. It was probably best for him not to know.

''JJ, focus for me. You can do this, I know you can.''

''There's one timer and two triggers. One is remote and the other is a cellphone.'' she replied quickly.

He closed his eyes, thinking back to his training. He had been trained in defusing bombs, but it had been years ago and this was a next gen weapon that was probably much more complicated. ''Which wire connects to the timer?''

JJ touched the timer gently and looked at the connected wires as her heart raced in her chest. ''The yellow wire.''

JJ stayed silent, waiting for Owen to say something. She was watching the seconds pass by and they were getting close to the end. ''Owen, I have two minutes left! I need you.'' JJ yelled over the phone, fighting through her tears, fears and nerves all at once. Her entire head was in complete chaos and she was relying on Owen to help her through. ''Owen!''

''Cut the yellow wire!''

If it wasn't for the hesitation in his voice, JJ would've cut the wire already, but she could hear the uncertainty. ''Owen, I'm hovering above a nuclear bomb with one and half minute left, I need you to be sure!''

''Cut the yellow wire!'' he repeated.

JJ took the knife from the ground, holding it in her shaking hand. She lifted it towards the wire and at the same time the timer went below a minute. She swallowed and put the knife under the yellow wire, and then cut it, her heart stopping at that exact moment.
